Rationalization, dominance and mobilizations
Work is neither a subject omitted by the research on the Horn of Africa, however this is nor an object of study in its own right. Scholars generally subordinate analysis of work to analysis of development. On the one hand this concept of development is linked with an optimistic vision which highlights the successes of the developmental State implemented in Ethiopia. On the other hand, development is associated to a pessimistic view of the country, focused on poverty reduction.

Since the middle of the first millennium of our era, Ethiopia has seen the development of two manuscript book cultures which seem to have evolved separately, on geopolitical territories for a long time distinct, in the service of different religions and administrations. These Christian and Islamic manuscript cultures also developed in various languages and scripts which have compartmentalised research on the subject. If the historiography of Christian manuscripts is already well rooted, Islamic manuscripts whether in Arabic languages and script or local languages and Arabic script (‘ağamī) up till now have been little studied.

Comme l’ont montré les historiens et les philologues travaillant sur les manuscrits arabes et swahili, le monde swahili est caractérisé par l’omniprésence de l’écrit en raison d’une islamisation ancienne de cet espace et de l’existence de pratiques de conservation des documents. Ceci était vrai autrefois, et l’est toujours aujourd’hui. Par conséquent, les archives et l’écrit constituent un lieu d’observation particulièrement pertinent pour engager des réflexions théoriques et épistémologiques sur les manières de travailler sur et avec les documents créés, sélectionnés, conservés, mais aussi utilisés, mis en circulation et médiatisés par différents acteurs sociaux et pour diverses raisons.

We expect articles from designers (ethnoarcheologist, anthropologists, geographers ...) and users (archaeologists). For example, how the study of different technical activities (ceramics, metal, basketry, architecture ...) from current societies contribute to a comparative ethno-archaeological thoughts? Expectations of the archaeologists and specialists of Nubia to ethnoarchaeology are welcome.

Cette conférence internationale vise à faire un état des lieux de la recherche en sciences sociales sur les migrations de la corne de l’Afrique à partir des travaux récents menés à la fois dans les régions d’origine, les régions de transit et celles de destination des migrants et des réfugiés. Avec la recrudescence des naufrages provoquant la mort de milliers de migrants éthiopiens, érythréens, somaliens et djiboutiens à proximité des rivages de l’Europe du Sud ces dernières années, particulièrement en 2015, les médias et les responsables politiques ont porté leur attention sur des zones jusque-là considérées comme marginales voire extérieures aux champs migratoires européens. Les formes de mobilités à l’œuvre dans la corne de l’Afrique sont multiples et anciennes. Ces drames auxquels l’Union européenne est confrontée, comme à Lampedusa en octobre 2013 ou aux larges des côtes libyennes en avril 2015, constituent la face la plus dramatique de dynamiques migratoires complexes.

L’Afrique orientale, entité à géométrie variable si l’on s’éloigne du sens que lui donna jadis la colonisation britannique et que l’on s’intéresse aux dynamiques politiques et économiques qui, aujourd’hui, contribuent à en redessiner les contours, a longtemps été appréhendée comme un patchwork de systèmes politiques et économiques de nature extrêmement différente. Malgré une histoire ancienne de connexions et d’échanges entre les différents pôles socioculturels qui composent cette grande Afrique orientale (les Grands Lacs, la côte swahilie, l’hinterland ethnicisé, la Corne), le temps colonial et postcolonial a accru les divisions identitaires, les hiérarchisations économiques, les blocages dans la circulation des hommes, des biens, des idées.

Today, these cities are entering more or less rapidly in the competitive global system and are becoming key actors of this system.What is the price of these mutations? Are they happening at the price of the existing city, in its form and in its social reality? Can these mutations lead to an ever greater vulnerability of poor people and their relegation?

Relations, policies, histories: castes and slavery in the Islamic Sahel
Les sociétés du Sahel musulman, du Sénégal au Soudan, connaissent des hiérarchies sociales complexes liées aux castes et à l’esclavage, qui défient toute volonté taxinomique. Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rendre compte des relations de caste et d’esclavage en partant de leur complexité et des contradictions sur lesquelles bute l’analyse. Trois thèmes sont proposés à la discussion : (1) Les castes ou les esclaves sont-ils des groupes définis en soi ou des entités qui n’ont du sens que par leur relationnalité, comme des termes qui traduisent des relations hiérarchiques ? (2) Dans quelles configurations et quels contextes les relations d’esclavage ou de caste font sens et sont opératoires ? (3) Comment rendre compte de la dynamique historique et de la mutabilité des configurations locales ?

Dans la région de Grands Lacs, en Afrique orientale, la vulnérabilité et la précarité qui touchent les enfants (enfants et jeunes-adolescents), se sont accrues ces dernières années avec plus ou moins d’intensité en raison de la situation politique conflictuelle ou post-conflictuelle. Le colloque traitera donc des « enfants précaires », entre « enfants victimes et jeunesse violente », il s’agit primo d’en mesurer les diverses dimensions, du moins contribuer à améliorer la connaissance – encore parcellaire – du sujet ; secundo d’étudier la prise en charge familiale et institutionnelle des enfants et tertio d’étudier les politiques publiques et l’action sociale à leur sujet. -

Rwanda: Genocide and Reconstruction
A journey through the Genocide of Tutsi
Organized in Rwanda by the Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center. The Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center based in Kigali, Rwanda continues their two/three-week US/Rwanda exchange program in order to deepen students’, researchers’, and artists’ knowledge of the Rwandan genocide. In the last years, the program started in 2004 has enabled teachers and students from Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, Singapore, Mexico, UK, France, Belgium, Spain, and the USA to develop narratives that engage questions of social justice, conflict resolution, and peace building. The program has involved theater artists, filmmakers, academicians, researches, and students from various disciplines and countries, whose practice engages questions of peace building.
