On Saturday 26th October 2002 we will be holding the second annual Historians on Sport one day conference. The aim of the day is to bring together leading historians so that they might discuss their work within the context of the social and cultural history of sport. The speakers for the 2002 event are as follows:
Professor Ross McKibbin, Oxford University and author of Classes and Cultures will talk about class and sport.
Professor Chris Wrigley, University of Nottingham, author of the History of British Industrial Relations and Lloyd George and the Labour Movement, will discuss labour and sport.
Professor John Mackenzie, Lancaster University and editor of the Manchester University Press series, Imperialism and Popular Culture, will address the issue of sport and empire.
Dr Robert Colls, University of Leicester and author of The Identity of England, will explore the relationship between Englishness and sport.
Mark Whitaker, BBC Radio 4 and documentary maker, will discuss the issues surrounding the presentation of sports history on radio for a wider audience.
Professor Tony Mason, De Montfort University and author of Association Football and English Society, and Professor Eric Dunning, Leicester University and author (with Norbert Elias) of The Quest for Excitement, will comment on the papers.
All papers will last for thirty minutes, with thirty minutes allowed after each one for audience discussion.
The conference will begin at 10.30, and conclude by 17.30. The cost of attending the conference will be £22 (£17 for students), and will include the registration fee, lunch and refreshment breaks. If you wish to attend
