Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, 24 - 27 March 2004
The Fifth European Social Science History Conference will be held at the Humboldt University in Berlin, on 24 - 27 March 2004. The ESSHC aims at bringing together scholars interested in explaining historical phenomena using the methods of the social sciences. The conference is characterized by a lively exchange in many small groups, rather than by formal plenary sessions. The Conference is organised in a large number of networks which cover a certain topic (e.g. criminal justice, family, social inequality, economics). Sessions and papers on Labour and Working Class History can be proposed to the chairs of the Labour History Network, David De Vries and Lex Heerma van Voss (emails below).
Among the topics already proposed for the Labour history sessions at the fifth ESSHC are the state of Labour History, Comparative history and criticism on it, Labour after 1945, Bringing in South Asia, Female labour in the Early Modern Netherlands, Gender and the Labour Market in the Interwar Period, Labour mobility, Labour internatioalism, Work and Income in Russia Labour History, Strike waves at the end of world wars, Comparative labour history of economic crises, Class and other identities, and The problems of team work. However, the Labour History Network welcomes other contributions dealing with all topics and periods within labour and working class history. When proposing a session or paper, please realise that full sessions are always somewhat easier to accommodate in the conference programme than single papers.
How to propose a paper: send a (provisional) title and a short abstract to the network chairs. How to propose a panel session: send in a (provisional) title and a short abstract for 3 or 4 papers. Add full names and addresses of all paper authors, and of a chair and/or commentator. Most sessions choose the panel format, but other types of sessions are encouraged.
