L'identité, entre ineffable et effroyable

Argument

Peut-on, sans prendre le risque de la figer, nommer l’identité ? Et celle-ci, une fois dite, ne contient-elle pas les ressorts et les tensions d’une des notions humaines les plus explosives ? Nommable ou pas, l’identité n’en demeure pas moins l’un des mots les plus débattus du Monde contemporain. De fait, ses bouleversements, effets de l’accès aux mobilités et leur passage à l’échelle et la dimension mondiales, de nature technologique et économique, etc. et les remises en causes induites des horizons référentiels habituels (politiques, sociologiques, géographiques, etc.), oblitèrent la pertinence et la validité des repères de tous et chacun. Ils placent, symétriquement, chacun face à la nouveauté de sa propre destiné, mais aussi face à celle des choix de son orientation. Le cas de l’Europe est des plus significatifs, si ce n’est exemplaire. Obsolescence des solutions du passé et angoisse d’un futur imprévisible actualisent, en même temps qu’elles en procèdent, les questions existentielles les plus fondamentales, à l’occasion rassemblées sous le terme partagé d’« identité ». L’interrogation se pose alors collectivement. Pourtant, l’apparent pouvoir rassembleur d’un mot évident pose immanquablement la question de ses multiples dimensions (politiques, culturelles, sexuelles, économiques, sociales, politiques, géographiques, etc.) qui, à l’occasion, pourraient aussi se révéler au moins autant ambiguës que contradictoires si ce n’est non-dites. En en neutralisant la charge émotionnelle, on peut attendre qu’un débat réunissant diverses sciences sociales et humaines alimente le dialogue autour des différentes « dimensions » de l’identité. Quelle est la part « sociologique » dans les identités singulières ? Existe-t-il des identités collectives ? Quelle part l’histoire et la mémoire prennent-elles dans l’identité ? En quoi la fréquentation des lieux participent-elle à sa définition ? Comment les croyances religieuses, le langage courant, etc. y contribuent-ils ? Et comment, ce tout, se combine-t-il, s’il se peut ? Mais une telle rencontre doit encore favoriser celui de l’exposé des différentes approches, conceptions et, s’il y en a, définitions. L’identité est-elle simple ou multiple ? Innée ou acquise ? Est-elle dans les permanences ou suit-elle les changements ? Renvoie-t-elle à une réalité singulière ou existe-t-il des identités collectives ? Autrement dit, de telles rencontres devraient permettre de confirmer, de reformuler ou d’infirmer, voire d’élargir cette appréciation que portait, en son temps, Thomas Mann situant l’identité entre l’ineffable et l’effroyable…

Déroulement

Le programme de ces rencontres est prévu sur deux journées, les 15 et 16 octobre 2008 à l’Université de Picardie-Jules-Verne. Celles-ci pourront s’articuler autour de trois entrées. La première serait épistémologique. Elle réunirait les réflexions sur la notion elle-même tout comme les point de vue de telle ou telle science ou approche sur l’identité. La seconde serait plus problématique. Elle rassemblera les communications croisant l’identité avec d’autres thèmes : identité et politique, esthétique, démocratie, religion, etc. La troisième devrait permettre de présenter des communications présentant des cas de figures particuliers. Quant à la quatrième demi-journée, on peut convenir d’en réserver le thème afin d’intégrer des propositions qui ne pourraient ou ne souhaiteraient pas entrer dans ces catégories. Identity, between the unspeakable and the dreadful

Is it possible to name to "identity" without running the risk of reifying it? And, where it has been stated in words, does it not evoke forces and tensions behind one of the most explosive of human phenomena? Whether it may be conveyed in words or not, identity is one of the most extensively debated words in our contemporary world. The successive upheavals which this phenomenon has undergone on a global scale, due to technological, economic and other forms of mutation and to the ensuing loss of habitual points of reference (whether political, sociological or geographical) has brought into question the relevance and validity of our bearings more generally. This state of affairs obliges each of us to face the novelty of his or her destiny and the necessity of choosing an orientation in light of this novel situation. The case of Europe is particularly significant, if it is not exemplary. The obsolescence of past solutions, and anxiety in face of an unpredictable future, confer a new significance on the most fundamental existential questions, which come to expression under the heading of "identity". The query takes on a collective scope. The apparent capacity of a single term to join together different significations unavoidably raises the question concerning the multiplicity of its dimensions (political, cultural, sexual, economic, political, geographic, etc.) which at times may also reveal themselves, often tacitly, to be not only ambiguous but even contradictory. In neutralizing its emotional charge, one may expect that a debate that unites different human and social sciences will lead to dialogue concerning the different "dimensions" of identity. What is the "sociological" component of singular identities? Is there such a thing as collective identity? What is the role of history and of memory in the articulation of identity? In what manner might the places one frequents contribute to its definition? How do religious beliefs, a language practised, etc. also play a role? And, if at all possible, how might one combine these different aspects as a whole? The encounter of different disciplines intends to encourage the exposition of different approaches, conceptions and - if possible - definitions. Is identity simple or multiple? Innate or acquired? Is it situated in what is permanent or in what changes? Does it refer to a singular or a collective reality? Otherwise stated, such encounters should permit us to confirm, reformulate or invalidate, in any case to broaden the estimation which, in his own time, Thomas Mann voiced when he situated identity between the unspeakable and the dreadful.

Schedule

The program of our meetings, organized at the Université de Picardie-Jules Verne, will extend over a period of two days, the 15th and 16th of October 2008. The meetings will revolve around three topics: The first concerns epistemology. It proposes to reflect on the notion of identity itself as well as on the viewpoints of the various disciplines or approaches to this notion. The second concerns identity as a problem. Here the papers will relate identity to other themes: identity and politics, aesthetics, democracy, religion, etc. The third will provide the possibility to present talks on particular cases or situations. The fourth half-day may be reserved for speakers whose themes do not fit into the topics of the first three. The time allotted to the talks will be a maximum of 20 minutes.
