Rethinking European (Homo)Sexual Modernity
Reconsidérer la modernité (homo)sexuelle européenne

Summary
Announcement
18 March 2010, from 10am to 4.30pm at the University of Antwerp, Grauwzusters Cloister, Lange Sint Annastraat 7, Antwerp 2000, Belgium
Historical analyses of same-sex eroticism have been dominated by Foucauldian and other Eurocentric conceptions of sexual modernity. Not only has this produced epistemological and methodological gaps, but the approach has rendered a narrative of Europe as homogenous and exceptional.
In these lectures, three eminent scholars of (homo)sexuality in history will examine the problem of a generalised idea of Europe and of European (homo)sexual identities from different perspectives:
- Dan Healey (Swansea University) – From Gulag to Moscow
- Rudi Bleys (Independent scholar) – Difference, identity & ‘residual matter’
- Dagmar Herzog (City University of New York) – Making Sense of Modern Homophobia
These public lectures are followed by a discussion which will be introduced and moderated by George Chauncey (Yale University)

Organised by the Department of History of the University of Antwerp in collaboration with the Yale Research Initiative for the History of Sexuality as the prelude to a two-day (closed) workshop conference.
