18 March 2010, from 10am to 4.30pm at the University of Antwerp, Grauwzusters Cloister, Lange Sint Annastraat 7, Antwerp 2000, Belgium

Historical analyses of same-sex eroticism have been dominated by Foucauldian and other Eurocentric conceptions of sexual modernity. Not only has this produced epistemological and methodological gaps, but the approach has rendered a narrative of Europe as homogenous and exceptional.

In these lectures, three eminent scholars of (homo)sexuality in history will examine the problem of a generalised idea of Europe and of European (homo)sexual identities from different perspectives:

  • Dan Healey (Swansea University) – From Gulag to Moscow
  • Rudi Bleys (Independent scholar) – Difference, identity & ‘residual matter’
  • Dagmar Herzog (City University of New York) – Making Sense of Modern Homophobia

These public lectures are followed by a discussion which will be introduced and moderated by George Chauncey (Yale University)
