Announcement

Lisbon, 19-20 November 2010

Deadline: 30 April 2010

The current international economic crisis has prompted comparisons with past crises from the last two centuries. This has challenged the social sciences to reflect on the factors that brought these crises about, as well as the commonalities and differences among them, and to consider their social and political implications at both national and international levels. The concept of crisis is inherent to a historical analysis when focusing on a short period – an event and its economic and/or social context. Thus it can identify moments of rupture in the evolutionary trends of human societies. While the current international context has highlighted the important contribution history can make as a field of knowledge that is equipped to study recurring phenomena, the year 2010 commemorates the centenary of the establishment of the Republican Regime in Portugal, a single event which brought significant long-term consequences to Portuguese society. The 30th Conference of the Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History seeks to address both these themes through a reflection on crises in all their multiple facets – economic, financial, socio-political – while contributing to enlarge the commemorative programme for the centenary of the First Republic.

Notwithstanding the central theme of this conference, we invite submissions for papers and proposals for panels on topics of economic and social history at large.

Proposals should be submitted as a 500-word abstract (with up to 4 keywords), outlining the topic, objectives, theoretical framework and empirical support, and be accompanied by a brief, 1-page CV.

The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2010. Proposals should be sent to aphes30@iseg.utl.pt.

A decision on proposals will be made by 30 May 2010, and the complete text (7,500 words maximum, including notes) should be submitted by 30 September 2010 in order to be posted online on the Meeting’s webpage.
