S’il est vrai que la confrontation est-ouest reste le critère principal pour interpréter les années 1970, les événements qui ont lieu dans la Méditerranée ne peuvent pas se réduire simplement à des logiques de guerre froide. L’objectif de ce colloque est précisément de placer les crises de la Méditerranée dans un contexte plus vaste qui prenne en compte les changements globaux des dernières décennies du XXe siècle. Si les années 1980 ont été la dernière décennie de ce « court XXème siècle » dominé par le conflit est-ouest, mais aussi le début d’une nouvelle ère, les années 1970 ont représenté un moment crucial à plusieurs points de vue : c’est à cette époque que les pays du Sud cherchent à modifier les règles des rapports économiques les liant au Nord industrialisé, c’est alors que les pays membres de la CEE s’engagent dans un parcours visant à affirmer leur identité et leur rôle sur le plan international, et c’est finalement le moment où se redéfinissent les relations entre l’Occident et les pays arabes afin de faire face à de nouveaux défis.
