The PoP (Performances of the Popular) Moves committee is now inviting submissions for the 2011 symposium, “Amplifying Movement: New directions in popular dance studies.” This annual gathering will bring together scholars and practitioners whose emphasis is on novel and challenging approaches to the study of popular performances, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary methodologies and their contributions to the growing field of popular dance studies. All areas of interest and themes are welcome. The list below is offered as a means to entertain and encourage combinations that may expand and stimulate conversations containing new configurations, collaborations and directions.
- Considerations of sound amplification in dancing encounters.
- Disability and neurodiversity in popular performance and reception.
- Ageing in popular/post/ sub/cultural dance practices.
- Dance and movement at the intersection of fashion, art and musical worlds.
- Humour and parody in corporeal performance.
- Street dance styles and their (dis)contents.
- Virtual, viral and video performances.
- Pleasure and pain in the music/dance relationship.
- Cross-dressing, drag and gender bending performances as radical pedagogy
- Historical perspectives on popular dance.

Guidelines for Proposals
1. Format
Presentations may take the form of a paper or a lecturedemonstration-workshop.
2. Abstracts
An abstract of 300 words is required, outlining the research area and key issues within a clearly articulated methodology.
3. Further information
The name of the speaker, their affiliated institution and programme, and the title of the paper should be enclosed on a separate sheet of paper, as the abstracts will be blind reviewed. The abstract should be submitted with its title only.
If speakers intend to present a lecture-demonstration-workshop, please indicate what your space requirements might be for this.
Please identify any AVS equipment that you might need for the presentation: DVD playback, data projector, internet access.
3. How to apply
Please send the following information by May 31st 2011.
- Abstract (including title of presentation).
- Name, affiliated institution and programme, presentation length, title of paper and email address on a separate sheet of paper.
- AVS needs.

Public transport: Closest DLR is “East India,” Canning Town on the Jubilee line or a short boat ride from “North Greenwich” also on the Jubilee line.
