This workshop addresses the topic of politics of history and memory, departing from a global and methodological perspective. António Sousa Ribeiro shares a reflection on politics of a global memory, using the Holocaust as a reference. Mahua Sarkar presents an analysis on oral history as a method, drawing on her research on Muslim women in late colonial Bengal. Joszef Borocz focuses on the relationship between the politics of the past and popular memory by examining some of the main forms of symbolic violence vis-à-vis history that inhere in what is commonly described as the “transition to market, democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration”. And Bilgin Ayata examines recente public debate in Turkey with regard to the Armenian Genocide, arguing that the battle for memory is at the heart of Turkey’s reconstruction of national identity in a process, that some regard as Europeanization, and others as a return to its Ottoman past. This workshop provides the opportunity to discuss structural issues when addressing peacebuilding efforts by focusing on the politics of history and memory.
