Summary
The CÉLAT research center (Centre interuniversitaire d’études sur les lettres, les arts et les traditions) at Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada) and the Musée de la civilisation (Quebec City, Canada) are proud to invite you to join their second Summer School on « Culture(s), Museum(s) and Society(ies) », from Sunday May 10th, 2013 to Saturday May 18th, 2013. During seven days, students, professors and renowned guest speakers from Quebec and abroad will collectively examine the myriad ways museums and other cultural heritage institutions may transform and adapt in order to maintain their leadership in increasingly global and technologically driven cultural sectors in a series of enquiry-based lectures and participatory workshops.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
New avenues are needed for museums. As the dual trends of globalization and technologization radically challenge the very notion of community, societies now must reconsider the gains of modernity – especially since museums are one of its fundamental legacies.
The role and position of the museum in the social sphere requires a reassessment. In fact, this problematization is relevant and applicable to all types of heritage management institutions such as archives, public libraries, local interpretation centres and museums. This is particularly relevant in light of recent institutional mixing or hybridization of institutional roles and functions. While encouraging a cross-institutional approach, contemporary cultural organisations are now seeking to adapt to newlyestablished community-driven ideas.
In a series of enquiry-based lectures and participatory workshops, students and professors will collectively examine the myriad ways museums and other cultural heritage institutions may transform and adapt in order to maintain their leadership in increasingly global and technologically driven cultural sectors.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The Summer School is an intensive course (45 hours) aimed at senior undergraduates (MSL-4010), as well as graduate students (MSL-7010 – a more substantive work load will be required of graduate students). The class will meet for 7 days from Sunday May 12th to Saturday May 18th, 2013.
In addition, professionals from both private and public sectors, heritage management officers, and museum specialists seeking to further their knowledge and experience in museum studies are particularly welcome. All lectures will be in French.
The Summer School will include lectures covering theoretical aspects – with contributions from renowned guest speakers from Québec, Canada, and abroad – as well as participatory workshops.
Fieldwork will also be an essential aspect of the Summer School and students will be given the opportunity to conduct on-site research in multiple cultural institutions located around the city centre. All formal lectures will take place at the Musée de la civilisation, located in the historic district of Old Quebec City (www.mcq.org).
EVALUATION
Only registered students will be evaluated. Evaluation will be based on participation in workshops and field exercises (25%) along with the presentation of a final project in class (25%) and a written report to be submitted in the weeks following the class (50%). Research professionals who do not wish to be evaluated are not required to submit the written report.
THE 2013 EDITION OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL IS LIMITED TO A MAXIMUM OF 30 PARTICIPANTS
Candidates will be selected on the basis of an application including a cover letter and resume.

REGISTRATION FEES
- Normal registration fees apply to Université Laval students along with an additional 150$ non-refundable programme fee.
- 545$ for international students (includes a 45$ Université Laval Continuing Education tuition fee)
- 795$ for professionals, public servants, and heritage management officers (includes a 45$ Université Laval Continuing Education tuition fee)
ACCOMMODATION Information about housing options near the Musée is available upon request.

All formal lectures will take place at the Musée de la civilisation, located in the historic district of Old Quebec City, under the guidance of Professor Philippe Dubé, History Department, Université Laval, director of LAMIC (Laboratoire de muséologie et d’ingénierie de la culture).
