Ce colloque permettra de porter un nouveau regard sur la sociologie de la globalisation culturelle et de contribuer à la synthèse d'enquêtes locales, qui transforment notre vision d'une histoire du jazz centrée jusqu'ici sur ses foyers de création majeurs (États-Unis, Europe). Ce colloque contribuera ainsi à une définition plus précise des contours du « jazz global ».

This conference will take a fresh look at the sociology of cultural globalization and help synthetizing localized research studies, allowing us to transform our vision of jazz history focused up to this point on its major centres of creation (United States, Europe). This conference will thus contribute to a more precise definition of the contours of "global jazz". 

Argumentaire

Le colloque international, intitulé « Les circulations globales du jazz / Global Circulations of Jazz », sera organisé les 27 et 28 juin 2013 au Musée du Quai Branly. Le colloque se propose de réunir des spécialistes, anthropologues, historiens, musicologues, sociologues, de la diffusion du jazz en dehors des endroits qui l’ont vu naître. On s’intéressera ainsi à cet « autre jazz », dont l’histoire est peu et mal connue, un jazz qui a circulé très tôt et a engendré des descendances musicales et culturelles particulièrement riches et fécondes. Sont encouragées les contributions qui permettront d’accroître nos connaissances sur la diffusion du jazz en Afrique du Sud, à l'Île Maurice et dans l'Océan Indien, en Amérique du Sud et encore en Inde et en Asie. Ce jazz « global » a préfiguré le grand mouvement de globalisation des musiques populaires au XXe et XXIe siècles, mais reste encore peu documenté. Le colloque permettra de réunir les chercheurs de différents pays, qui ont commencé à s'intéresser à ces circulations périphériques.

Ce colloque contribuera ainsi activement à une définition plus précise des contours du "jazz global".

Le colloque se conclura par la projection d’un documentaire sur la diffusion du jazz en Inde, Finding Carlton. Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India, suivie d’une discussion avec son réalisateur, Susheel Kurien.

Argument

An international conference entitled "Global Circulations of Jazz" will be held on June 27-28, 2013, at the Musée du Quai Branly. Bringing together specialists, anthropologists, historians, musicologists, sociologists, it will explore the dissemination of jazz outside of its places of birth. We will look at this ‘other jazz’, whose history is little and poorly known. Jazz music circulated very early, and engendered particularly rich and fertile musical and cultural progeny around the world. Papers are encouraged that will increase our understanding of the spread of jazz in South Africa, in Mauritius and in the Indian Ocean, South America and even in India and Asia. This "global" jazz prefigured the great movement of globalization of popular music in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but remains poorly documented. The conference will bring together researchers from different countries, who have begun to address, preferably on an empirical basis, these secondary circuits of diffusion.

This conference will take a fresh look at the sociology of cultural globalization and help synthetizing localized research studies, allowing us to transform our vision of jazz history focused up to this point on its major centres of creation (United States, Europe). This conference will thus actively contribute to a more precise definition of the contours of "global jazz". 

The conference will conclude with the screening of a documentary on the dissemination of jazz in India, Finding Carlton. Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India, followed by a discussion with the director, Susheel Kurien.

Submission guidelines

This call for papers is aimed at scholars as well as doctoral students from various disciplines. Papers should rest on empirical work, while not being purely descriptive, and discuss the results, theoretical issues and methods. Papers around various countries and cultural areas are welcome, as well as those addressing the topics in a comparative perspective.

Proposals may be submitted in French or English.
