The objective of this colloquium will be to debate and analyze politics and the political by means of the different forms of language, discourse and practices that intervene in the construction of the social world. There are myriad examples of this in Chilean history. Taking history, political philosophy and political economy as the starting points, we invite doctoral candidates, researchers and academics to participate in this truly trans disciplinary  space of debate, reflection and feedback whose goal is not only to unite a community of researchers into “the political” in the republican period but also to select the best works presented for a future publication in the format of a collective work or a special dossier of a scientific publication. 

Desde de los múltiples usos de las nociones de república, ciudadanía y virtud cívica, pasando por las inflexiones etnoraciales, de género y de clase presentes en el discurso del Estado-nación, los discursos y lenguajes de la revolución y del estado de excepción en el siglo XX, hasta la retórica y las prácticas del consenso político y del neoliberalismo en la historia inmediata, el objetivo de este coloquio será debatir y analizar la política y lo político a través de las diversas formas de articulación entre los lenguajes, los discursos, y las prácticas que intervienen en la construcción del mundo social.

2013 in Chile will combine the end of the celebrations of the bicentenary since Independence with the commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the coup d’etat which ushered in a bureaucratic authoritarian dictatorship. This invites us to rethink the future of the Chilean Republic and the different processes of transformation that have moulded its political history. The intellectual debate surrounding the historical and political problems of this latter period left us with a series of important academic publications that appeared between the years of political repression and the plebiscite of 1988. Paradoxically, after the return of democracy, the critical spirit of that intellectual exercise became diluted by party political conflicts and special interests, exposing the tensions in the controversial “political transition”.

Interestingly the celebration of the Bicentenary was also marked by this failure to live up to intellectual expectations. There was nothing comparable to the Centenary celebrations which were nourished by the burgeoning of critical creole thought. The so-called “essayists of the Centenary” embraced the task of dissecting the political, social and cultural problems that the country confronted having been politically independent for a century, but this did not occur with the Bicentenary.

In this context a group of historians, political scientists and economists has organised the First International Colloquium of the History of the Political. This meeting, organised jointly with the Chilean National Archive, seeks to ignite a new academic debate exploring the history of “the political” by means of an interdisciplinary perceptive that focuses on the intersections of history, political philosophy, social science, constitutional law and political economy.

Within this perspective we will consider the following methodological questions and heuristic problems that should orientate our academic reflection on politics and the history of the political in Chile:

In what was does language and discourse construct and/or determine the political sphere? To what extent can they be differentiated and on the basis of what methodologies? What is their provenance in what context do they emerge? Can micro and macro analysis make it possible to trace the sensibilities, practices, events and moments that produce and modify them? How are the future of social and political life linked? What are the contributions and limits of the human and social sciences to the understanding of the (trans)national texts and contexts that have marked the politics and history of the political in Chile?

Going beyond the theological approximations of the liberal political science, the reification of the subaltern by social history and the historiographic manichaeism that has limited the interpretations of political history to the antagonism between a series of binary concepts (e.g. conservatives and liberals, order and disorder, elites and masses) the challenge of this meeting will be to rethink politics and the history of the political (in its multiple dimensions and juxtapositions) from an interdisciplinary perspective. For precisely this reason we will be seeking to go beyond the standard diachronic focus on the construction on the Republic of Chile during the 19th and 20th century. We will also be looking at new, de-centred and cross-polinated readings that, starting from socio-historic, transnational or counterfactual perspectives, will help deciphering the problems that are hidden, ignored or exacerbated by the standard focus.

Starting with the multiple uses of the concept of “republic”, “citizenship” and “civic virtue” in the nineteenth century, the ethno-racial, gender and class biased undertones of the discourse of the nation-state and the discourses and languages of revolution, ending up with the logic of the “state of exception” of the 20th century and the rhetoric and practice of political consensus and neoliberalism in the 21st.

How to Participate

Interested parties should present their research by e-mail to

politicaehistoriadelopolitico@gmail.com

with an one-page curriculum vitae (in PDF format) and an abstract of 250 words including name and surname, title, institutional affiliation and the number of the panel being applied to.

The Scientific Committee will select the three best proposals for each panel based on the novelty of the theme being suggested, the originality of the interpretation, the methodological coherence and the compatibility with the objectives of the colloquium.

Each panel will consist of three presentations, with 2 critical commentators with distinguished trajectories, and a moderator designated by the organising committee. Each presenter will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present his text.

At the end each panel will receive questions and criticisms from the commentators and public.

Once all the panels have been concluded the colloquium will finish with a round table in which certain commentators and members of the scientific committee will participate.

The presenters and the public who have been properly registered will be presented with a certificate of attendance and participation at the colloquium emitted by the Chilean National Archive.

El fin de las conmemoraciones del Bicentenario de la Independencia y la memoria de los cuarenta años del golpe de Estado que instauró en Chile una dictadura cívico-militar invitan a repensar el devenir de la República en los diferentes procesos de transformación que han acontecido en la historia política chilena. El debate intelectual en torno a estos problemas históricos y políticos ha dejado una serie de importantes publicaciones ensayísticas y académicas que aparecieron entre los años de represión política y el plebiscito del año 1988. Paradójicamente, tras la recuperación de la democracia el espíritu crítico y el ejercicio intelectual se confundió con las trincheras partidistas y el interés privado, dejando en evidencia las tensiones de una transición política controvertida. La celebración del Bicentenario tampoco respondió a las expectativas intelectuales que cien años antes alimentaron un pensamiento crítico criollo, cuando los llamados “ensayistas de la crisis del Centenario” emprendieron la tarea de desentrañar los problemas políticos, sociales y culturales que el país enfrentaba una vez cumplido el primer siglo de vida política independiente.

En este contexto particular del tiempo presente un grupo de historiadores, politólogos y cientistas sociales hemos organizado el I Coloquio Internacional de Historia de lo político. Este encuentro, organizado junto al Archivo Nacional de Chile, busca instalar un nuevo debate académico explorando la historia de lo político a través de una perspectiva interdisciplinaria que considere las intersecciones de la historia, la filosofía política, las ciencias sociales, el constitucionalismo y la economía política.

En esta perspectiva, consideramos una serie de preguntas metodológicas y problemas heurísticos que debieran orientar la reflexión académica sobre la política y la historia de lo político en Chile:

¿De qué manera los lenguajes y discursos construyen y/o determinan la esfera política? ¿Cómo pueden ser diferenciados y en base a qué metodologías? ¿Cuál es su historicidad y en qué contextos emergen? ¿Es posible rastrear, a través del juego de escalas del micro y macro análisis, las sensibilidades, prácticas, acontecimientos y momentos que los procesan y/o modifican? ¿Cómo se vinculan con el devenir de la vida política y social? ¿Cuáles son los aportes y límites de las ciencias humanas y sociales a la comprensión de los textos y contextos (trans)nacionales que han marcado la política y la historia de lo político en Chile?

Más allá de las aproximaciones teleológicas de la politología liberal, de la reificación de lasubalternidad por parte de las ciencias sociales y la historia social y de un maniqueísmo historiográfico que ha limitado las interpretaciones de la historia política al antagonismo de una serie de conceptos binarios como conservadores y liberales, orden y desorden, elites y sujetos populares, el desafío de este encuentro será repensar desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria la política y la historia de lo político en sus dimensiones múltiples y yuxtapuestas. Por esta razón, junto al tradicional enfoque diacrónico de la construcción de la República en Chile durante los siglos XIX y XX, es de sumo interés considerar nuevas lecturas cruzadas y descentradas que, a partir de perspectivas sociohistóricas, transnacionales y/o contrafactuales, puedan descifrar las problemáticas ocultas, ignoradas y exacerbadas de dicho proceso.

Tomando a la historia, la filosofía política y a la economía política como puntos de partida, invitamos a doctorantes, investigadores y académicos a participar de un espacio de debate, reflexión y retroalimentación verdaderamente transdisciplinario, cuyo propósito no sólo es reunir a una comunidad de estudiosos de lo político en la era republicana sino también seleccionar los mejores trabajos presentados para una futura publicación bajo el formato de un libro colectivo o un dossier especial en una revista científica.

Cómo participar

Los interesados en presentar sus investigaciones deberán enviar por correo electrónico (politicaehistoriadelopolitico@gmail.com) un curriculum vitae de una página (en formato PDF) y un resumen de 250 palabras, indicando en el mensaje su nombre y apellido, correo electrónico, título de la comunicación, afiliación institucional y panel al que postula.

El comité científico y organizador seleccionará las tres mejores propuestas para cada panel en base a la novedad del tema sugerido, originalidad interpretativa, coherencia metodológica y adecuación a los objetivos del coloquio,

Cada panel estará conformado por tres ponencistas, dos comentaristas críticos de destacada trayectoria y un moderador designado por el comité organizador. Cada ponencista contará con un máximo de 20 minutos para presentar su texto. Al final de cada panel los ponencistas recibirán preguntas y críticas por parte de los comentaristas y el público asistente.

Una vez concluidos las presentaciones de los paneles el coloquio será clausurado con una mesa redonda en la cual participarán algunos comentaristas y el comité científico.

Los ponencistas y el público asistente debidamente registrado recibirán un certificado de participación y asistencia al coloquio otorgado por el Archivo Nacional de Chile.
