We are pleased to invite you to contribute papers for a Special Session on ‘Family Farming and Sustainable Development: 2014 and beyond’, which we will organize at the 20th APDR Congress on 10-11 July 2014. The Congress will take place at the University of Évora, in Évora (Portugal) and will be a major international event.

Motivation and aim

The 2014 International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) established by FAO and the ongoing 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, offer an opportunity to direct world attention on the role of the family in the national agendas. Having these two international observances under the auspices of the United Nations as a backdrop, this special session addresses to discuss the role of family farming and small holders in 2014 and beyond. By the end, we hope to refocus on the importance of family farming for sustainable development and contribute to a wide, plural and current discussion on this issue.

Potential topics

We invite for submission proposals from any discipline, methodology, community or a combination of them reflecting upon, but not limited to, the following broad topics related to family farming and sustainable development:

1. Reflecting upon and beyond the 2014 IYFF goals: family farming, food security, poverty and hunger;
2. Family farming between tradition and innovation;
3. Family farming, smart, sustainable and inclusive growth;
4. Family farming, entrepreneurship and gender;
5. New territorial dynamics in areas of low density and pluri family farming;
6. New forms of rurality: old and new actors in family farming;
7. Family farming at the crossroads of the agricultural, environmental and social policies;
8. Family farming, territorial and social resilience and family values;
9. The Mediterranean diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and family farming: challenges and opportunities;
10. ‘Family farming’ as a trademark: from the market-place to the supermarket, restaurants and tourism industry.

Motivação e objetivo

O Ano Internacional da Agricultura Familiar (AIAF) 2014 estabelecido pela FAO e a comemoração do 20.º aniversário do Ano Internacional da Família em 2014 oferecem a oportunidade de focalizar a atenção mundial sobre o papel e a importância da família na sociedade contemporânea. Tendo estes dois marcos internacionais sob os auspícios das Nações Unidas em pano de fundo, esta sessão especial visa discutir a atualidade e o futuro da agricultura familiar e dos pequenos agricultores. Em última instância, é nosso objetivo refletir sobre a importância da agricultura familiar para o desenvolvimento sustentável e contribuir para uma discussão ampla, plural e atual em torno deste tema.

Temas potenciais

Convidamos à apresentação de propostas de comunicação oriundas de qualquer campo disciplinar, abordagem metodológica ou comunidade que reflitam sobre os seguintes (e outros) temas gerais relacionados com a agricultura familiar e o desenvolvimento sustentável:

1. Refletindo sobre e para além dos objetivos do AIAF 2014: agricultura familiar, segurança alimentar, pobreza e fome;
2. Agricultura familiar entre tradição e inovação;
3. Agricultura familiar e crescimento inteligente, sustentável e inclusivo;
4. Agricultura familiar, empreendedorismo e género;
5. Novas dinâmicas territoriais em territórios de baixa densidade e a pluriatividade na agricultura familiar;
6. Novas formas de ruralidade: velhos e novos atores na agricultura familiar;
7. A agricultura familiar na encruzilhada das políticas agrícolas, ambientais e sociais;
8. Agricultura familiar, resiliência territorial e social e valores familiares;
9. A dieta mediterrânica como Património Imaterial da Humanidade e a agricultura familiar: potencialidades e desafios;
10. A ‘agricultura familiar’ como marca: da praça ao supermercado, restaurantes e indústria do turismo.
