La chaire UNESCO en Patrimoine immatériel et savoir-faire traditionnel : Lier patrimoines propose d’explorer la problématique liée à la mer sous de nouveaux angles, notamment celui du patrimoine et ceux qui ont façonné nos identités culturelles. L’accent est mis sur les aspects sociaux et multiculturels de la mer, les cultures de la pêche, les structures industrielles et architecturelles, et les objets archéologiques. Sans exclure d'autres régions, une attention particulière sera donnée à des endroits où la culture portugaise a établi des racines. Nous cherchons à favoriser des nouveaux supports, notamment les carnets de voyage, les dessins, les correspondances, la littérature et les photographies, tous représentant des aspects du patrimoine immatériel.

La Chaire UNESCO en Patrimoine Immatériel et Savoir-faire Traditionnel: Lier Patrimoines propose d’explorer la problématique liée à la mer sous de nouveaux angles, notamment celui du patrimoine et ceux qui ont façonné nos identités culturelles. Modalités pratiques d'envoi des propositions

Les résumés peuvent être présentés en français ou en anglais. Ils ne doivent pas dépasser 500 mots y compris l’intitulé. Ils doivent être accompagnés d’un mini-CV du candidat d’une demi-page. La durée de chaque présentation est fixée à 25 minutes au maximum.

Les candidats dont les résumés auront été sélectionnés seront sollicités par le comité d’envoyer le texte définitif de leurs communications avant le 31 Setembre de 2014. Les actes de la conférence seront publiés dans un numéro monographique de la Chaire. La conférence aura lieu à l'Universite de Évora (Portugal) du 29 octobre au 1 novembre 2014.

Argument

The UNESCO Chair in Intangible Heritage and Traditional Know-How: Linking Heritage was officially launched in March 2013. On occasion of its first anniversary, the Chair proposes that its first International Conference should explore new approaches to a range of questions related to Sea Heritages, especially with regard how the sea shaped our cultural identities.

Conference theme

The focus of the conference lies on two complementary topics that are also central research themes of the Chair:

• Heritages of the sea, focusing on social aspects of sea multiculturalism, cultures of fishing, industrial structures, and archaeological artefacts. Without excluding other regions, particular attention will be given to places where Portuguese culture took root. This topic can be exemplified by the history of how Portuguese immigrants contributed to the culture of whaling first in Hawaii and later on at the West and East coast of the United States.

• The Chair seeks to shed new light on a number of different media, such as travel books, drawings, correspondence, literature or photography, which are all representing aspects of intangible heritage.

In providing an opportunity for the presentation of current research and future projects in the fields of heritage, tourism, cultural studies and architecture, the conference also fosters academic exchange among researchers.

Submission guidelines

Abstracts can be submitted in French or English. They should not exceed 500 words and include the title of the communication. The abstract should be accompanied by the candidate’s mini-CV of approximately half a page. The maximum duration of each presentation is 25 minutes.
The deadline for the submission of abstracts is

July 15, 2014.

The abstracts should be sent to the following address: cidehus@uevora.pt . Candidates whose abstracts have been selected will be asked by the Committee to submit the final version of their communications no later than September 30, 2014.
The conference proceedings will be published in one of the Chair’s monographic editions. The conference itself will take place from October 29 to November 1, 2014 in Évora (Portugal).
