Organized within the framework of the three branches of the PhD course in Anthropology - Social and Cultural Anthropology, Forensic Anthropology, and Biological Anthropology - this symposium aims to discuss the impact of natural disasters in the human life in an interdisciplinary approach. The International Symposium on Anthropology and Natural Disasters will offer the possibility for a complementary dialogue between the various fields of anthropology, in the understanding and resolution of problems, and in the promotion of new research avenues.

Presentation and argument

On behalf of the Department of Life Sciences we would like to invite you to participate in the International Symposium on Anthropology and Natural Disasters to be held in the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, on April 17-18, 2015. 

Organized within the framework of the three branches of the PhD course in Anthropology - Social and Cultural Anthropology, Forensic Anthropology, and Biological Anthropology - this symposium aims to discuss the impact of natural disasters in the human life in an interdisciplinary approach.

The International Symposium on Anthropology and Natural Disasters will offer the possibility for a complementary dialogue between the various fields of anthropology, in the understanding and resolution of problems, and in the promotion of new research avenues. It will feature a blend of presentation formats, including keynote lectures, podium presentations, organized poster sessions, and photo exhibition(s). 

The Symposium will be part of the 17th Cultural Week of the University of Coimbraunder the celebration of UC’s 725 years: Tempo de Encontro(s) and the 130 years of the creation of the discipline of Anthropology in Coimbra/Portugal. 

We look forward to welcome you at the “Students’ city” and University of Coimbra Alta and Sofia World Heritage.

Submission guidelines

The official languages of the Symposium are Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. However, all the abstracts and texts (slides and poster) must be in English.

Em nome do Departamento de Ciências da Vida gostaríamos de convidar a participar no International Symposium on Anthropology and Natural Disasters, a decorrer nos dias 17 e 18 de Abril de 2015 na Universidade de Coimbra (UC), Portugal.

Organizado no âmbito do programa doutoral de Antropologia – ramos de especialização em Antropologia Social e Cultural, Antropologia Forense e Antropologia Biológica – este Simpósio tem como objetivo discutir o impacto dos desastres naturais na vida humana, numa abordagem interdisciplinar.

Neste sentido, consideramos a classificação proposta pelo Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED).

O International Symposium on Anthropology and Natural Disasters irá proporcionar um diálogo complementar entre os vários campos da Antropologia, na compreensão e resolução de problemas, bem como na promoção de novas linhas de investigação. Incluirá uma combinação de diferentes formatos de apresentação, incluindo palestras principais, comunicações orais, posters e a exposição Tsunami in Banda Aceh [2004/2005]: fotografia e memória.

O Simpósio estará inserido na XVII Semana Cultural da UC, na celebração UC 725 Anos: Tempo de encontro(s), e dos 130 anos da criação da primeira cátedra de Antropologia em Coimbra/Portugal. 

Antecipamos as boas vindas à “Cidade dos Estudantes” e à Universidade de Coimbra – Alta e Sofia Património Mundial.
