World War I had a devastating impact upon German Missions (Roman Catholic and Protestant). A general description of German mission fields A.D. 1914 will be the starting point of the Conference. Case studies are welcome on particular territories such as Togo, Cameroon, East Africa, South-West Africa, South East Asia, Pacific area, China, India, Middle East. Attention will be paid to the predicament of local « orphaned » Christian churches and communities, and to the relationships between the local leadership with the new foreign missions authorized by the Allies instead of German personnel. Exiled German missionaries back home continued to work intellectually on behalf of their fields and published a considerable amount of papers, dictionaries, theological, historical and ethnographic monographs that should be revisited. A vast area of debates and polemics occurred in the specialized missiological circles, on the question of a « German missiology ». The general public and the German political authorities took part in those debates which reached the international missionary community. Several aspects of the resilience of German missions can be observed until the outbreak of World War II in 1939.

  • Topic 1 : German missions 1913-1914 : a general overview
  • Topic 2 : The End of german missions 1914-1920
  • Topic 3 : The Local Churches' Initiatives
  • Topic 4 : The "grieving process" of the german missions and the missiological debate
  • Topic 5 : The resilience of the german missions and of german missiology
