L’année 2016 avec le centenaire des deux batailles symboles de la première guerre mondiale – Verdun et la Somme – nous amène a choisir comme thème la bataille et le champ de bataille dans l’historiographie du premier conflit mondial. Depuis John Keegan et son Anatomie de la bataille, un grand nombre d’ historiens ont enrichi notre compréhension de l’expérience du combat, mais aussi notre savoir sur la représentation littéraire et artistique du champ de bataille, ainsi que notre analyse de la mémoire des batailles dans le souvenir qu’a laissé la Grande Guerre à travers le monde. Notre semaine à Verdun et Péronne nous donnera non seulement l’occasion de travailler ensemble sur un état de l’art de la recherche sur les batailles de la première guerre mondiale et de découvrir les avancées les plus récentes en archéologie du champ de bataille et en histoire environnementale de la guerre, mais aussi et surtout de confronter ces savoirs abstraits avec des visites de terrain.

The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.

Le Centre international de recherche de l’Historial de la Grande Guerre (Péronne) avec l’EHESS (Paris), le Zentrum für Militärgeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften der Bundeswehr (Potsdam) et l’université de Picardie Jules Vernes (Amiens) sollicite des candidatures pour son université d’été de jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur la Première Guerre mondiale ou plus largement la conflictualité contemporaine.

Objectifs

Nous comptons réunir un groupe international de jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur l’histoire militaire, culturelle, sociale et environnementale de la guerre. Au cours de la semaine passée ensemble, ils auront l’occasion d’échanger entre eux, mais également avec un grand nombre de chercheurs de renommée internationale. Des visites et des excursions font partie intégrale du programme et enrichissent l’expérience.

Programme

L'école d'été se tiendra du 26 juin au 2 juillet 2016, à Péronne puis Verdun.

Les participants bénéficieront de visites guidées des champs de bataille et des sites mémoriaux autour de Verdun et dans la Somme, avec des spécialistes locaux et des experts en archéologie du champ de bataille. Des conférences et des débats avec des historiens de renom de la Première Guerre mondiale (dont Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau, Annette Becker, Annie Deperchin, John Horne, Gerd Krumeich, Anne Rasmussen et Jay Winter) complèteront des séances de travail en atelier animées par les membres du comité organisateur.

Nous disposons de places pour tous les participants aux cérémonies du 1er juillet 2016 dans la Somme (Thiepval).

Conditions

Les langues de travail de l’université d’été seront l’anglais et le francais. Afin de participer pleinement au programme et en particulier aux visites guidées, une connaissance au moins passive du francais est exigé.

Afin de nous permettre d’échanger efficacement, nous enverrons un dossier préparatif à lire avant de venir avec des extraits d’archives et des articles scientifiques aux participants une fois la sélection effectuée.

Nous couvrirons l’hébergement (en chambre individuelle ou de deux personnes; sanitaires partagés), le transport (au départ et au retour de Paris), les droits d’entrée pour les différents sites et la plupart des repas. Nous pourrons également participer aux frais de transport des participants vers/de Paris, en particulier pour ceux dont les institutions d’origine ne subventionnent pas ce type de dépenses.

The International Research Centre of the Historial de la Grande Guerre, Péronne, with its partners at the EHESS Paris, the Zentrum für Militärgeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften der Bundeswehr, Potsdam and the Université de Picardie Jules Vernes invites applications for its summer school in Verdun and Péronne for graduate students working on the First World War or modern conflicts more generally.

Aims

We aim to bring together an international group of outstanding young scholars with interests in, but not limited to, the military, cultural, social, and environmental histories of war. Over the course of a week, students will spend time in discussion with their peers, but also a wide range of leading international academics. Excursions and visits are an integral part of the programme and serve to enrich the experience.

Programme highlights

Activities will include guided tours of battlefields and memorial sites around Verdun and at the Somme, with local guides and specialists of battlefield archeology. Lectures by and debates with renowned historians of the First World War (including Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau, Annette Becker, Annie Deperchin, John Horne, Gerd Krumeich, Anne Rasmussen and Jay Winter) will supplement our smaller seminar sessions with the summer school organizing historians (see below). On July 1st, 2016 we have seats reserved for all participants at the Somme centenary commemoration in Thiepval.

Conditions

The working languages of the summer school will be English and French. In order to participate in the full programme and in particular the guided tours of the battlefields a good passive knowledge of French (the capacity to understand a native speaker giving a fairly technical talk) is indispensable.

In order to allow for the greatest possible interaction and debate during the summer school, participants will be expected to read a certain number of documents ahead of time and prepare them for presentation.

We will cover accommodation (in 1 and 2-bed-rooms, shared bathrooms), all local transport (leaving and returning to Paris), entry fees for the various sites and most meals. We will also be able to provide assistance for travel costs to/from Paris for participants, especially those whose academic institutions do not cover such expenses.
