Summary
This symposium aims to cover some major questions raised by law’s (actual or alleged) indeterminacy, such as claims that law is systemically indeterminate, or that every very indeterminacy in the law is due to linguistic indetermincacy, such as vagueness and open texture. Relations between indeterminacy and interpretation, judicial discretion, politics and the rule of law will also be dealt with.

Argument
This symposium aims to cover some major questions raised by law’s (actual or alleged) indeterminacy. Lawyers and philosophers alike are often faced with the claim that law is systemically indeterminate. It has been over thirty years since the Critical Legal Studies and their opponents, notably Ronald Dworkin, put the question of law’s indeterminacy back onto the theoretical stage. In fact, the right answer thesis does not seem to grow out of both opponents and staunch defenders. The time therefore seems ripe for an assessment of past controversies and of their fruitfulness for further reflexions.
The symposium will also focus on semantic or linguistic indeterminacies in law. Is every indeterminacy in the law due to vagueness and open texture? What are vagueness and open texture in the first place and what specific form do they take in legal contexts?
Relations between indeterminacy and interpretation, judicial discretion, politics and the rule of law will also be dealt with.
