Summary

Announcement

The International Colloquium "Augmented Reality: manifestations and perceptions" will take place ont the 7th   and the 8th April 2017 at Sousse. It is organised by the research unity UR 13ES57 of the Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Sousse with the support of its partners (Association RADHEDH Méditerranéen pour les Arts, Délégation Culturelle de Sousse et l’IFT – relais culturel de Sousse)

Argument

Saying that new technologies are making to the humanity a leap into the future would be mitigating. It would be better to talk about a redoubling its reality or shortly a parallel reality. In other words, a reality which transgresses the real and risks to modify our perception of the world. Its ultimate objective is to substitute reality. It cultivates delusion and traps the user (the Man). Thus we are in full ‘simulacrum’ (Platon), according to Baudrillard in full ‘simulation’.

With this augmented reality, we are in the intermediate perception, its IT medium is presented as an extension of the human body. As such, the user of this medium discovers qualities that he could never discover in the material reality where he feels frustrated by the limits imposed by the three tragic dimensions of his existence: his own body, space and time. This reality where the body is freed from the constraints is called an ‘augmented reality’, its synonym in Arabic is an amplified reality. It could reveal, cording to Freud, a principle of pleasure which manages the life experience of the Man, as well it includes, the gaming, the art of questing all forms of pleasure. However it is not only playful  since we can align under this ’new’ reality the scientific prowess in order to compensate the biomechanical and sensorial failures of the body; thus the augmented reality has a plural dimension that links the playful to the utilitarian. The performances will be fascinating; the two realities could merge and settle the user into the unspeakable.

Certain artists have made of it a field to application of their work. Already, the engagement of the artist performer, life, his body and his life video at the same time in front of the public is indeed an expressivity that adds the other image of the self.  For example, the work of Stelarc (Australian artist), who convokes ‘the technological sublime’ by conjugating the biological body with the electronic components and other robotic elements, announces in his way the augmented body in a digital era.

The invention of avatars, the virtual prototypes of non edible food delivered to the curiosity of the public or also virtual spaces of possible architectures that ould be visited immediately as allowed the digital revolution.

However as the cinema and theatre resort to the power of trompe-l’oeil of the augmented reality seems to be an enrichment of the artistic forms (dance, performance, theatre, street art etc.), the medicine, the ophthalmological, orthopedical, nanotechnological surgery, the astrology etc. Brought miraculous solutions to humanity. Whether artists or scientists, today, try to capture the emotion of the public, satisfy their expectations by changing the unreal into a marvellous reality.

  • Would there be a deep feeling of dissatisfaction for the Man who does not know the limits of his biological body that could float in an augmented space time?
  • The body, as perceived by Stelarc and reported by Scott de Lahunta , ‘is it becoming a high zone , a positioning ready for a new conception and radical change, for the invasions of the robots and computer sim cards’?
  • By Transposing the key concept of interpretation of Anne Ubersfeld ‘Le mentir-vrai’ ’the lying-true’, are we in front of a new ethic, that of digital lying?
  • Could the Man be dehumanized and is he in front of losing his myths? Or is he already in a state of ‘post humanity’?
  • What could happen to his system of values? Should he leave these archaic values for the values imposed by the augmented reality?
  • Will we witness a mutation of some fields like the anthropology, the ethnology, the psychoanalysis, in short, the human sciences?

In This international colloquium, we are going to try to answer these questions
