De fait, la revue a été un lieu de rencontres pluridisciplinaires où l’objet de recherche fut souvent l’interaction entre espace, populations et sociétés. Cette interaction constitue précisément l’objet du colloque.

Presentation

In 2018, Espace populations sociétés (EPS [Space Populations Societies]) will celebrate its thirty-fifth anniversary. On this occasion, the journal is organizing a conference on March 28th and 29th, 2018 in Lille.

Space populations societies: three terms which define each of the distinct research fields covered by geographers, demographers and sociologists. Yet, for EPS, these three terms are not separated by punctuation, to better underscore the fact that, in many cases, each cannot be grasped without an appreciation of the other two. In fact, the journal has offered an interdisciplinary meeting place where the research focus has often been the interaction between space, populations and societies. It is this very interaction which is the focus of the conference.

The Key Issue of the Conference

The studies for this conference should employ a dynamic approach to understanding the interaction between space, populations and societies. It will be possible to grasp this interaction from a historical angle, from an angle of contemporary dynamics or from a prospective point of view. This could be examined at a local level or on a broader geographical scale, in southern or northern countries. In addition to papers presenting empirical results, interventions of a methodological nature, devoted to means of understanding these interactions, are also welcome.

Three approaches are proposed :

• The effect of societal evolutions on demographic and/or spatial dynamics. For example, to what extent has the motorization of populations or the desire to own a single family dwelling played a role in the localization of households in suburban and rural spaces? What was the impact of the reduction in working hours on the development of tourist areas? How may differentiated socialization and the fear of the other foster the phenomena of segmentation of residential space, to the point of even leading to the creation of luxurious blocked-off areas (gated communities) and the exclusion of stigmatized populations (populations of immigrant origin, for example)?
• The effect of demographic evolutions on societal and/or spatial dynamics. For example, how are international movements constrained by historical events (the migration of those fleeing conflicts), regional migration in reaction to economic exigencies (the need to move to an area where there is significant employment available) or, at the local level, the changes of residence linked to different life trajectories reflected in the sociodemographic composition of territories? How do new populations integrate into the space and the societies which welcome them and what are the consequences in spatial terms (for example the informal migrant camps in the very heart of French cities or the informal settlements in the large cities of the South)?
• The effect of (re)arrangements of space on demographic and societal dynamics. For example, what could be the impact of the destruction of an old neighbourhood and the relocation of its residents, such as that observed in Beijing during the Olympic Games of 2008, on the socialization of individuals? What consequences could the localization (or delocalization) of public infrastructures have on residential dynamics? At the local level, what effect could a municipal policy intended to protect cultural heritage have on the residential appeal of historical centres? After controlling for socioeconomic factors, how could environmental and cultural characteristics of the site where populations reside affect their health and their mortality? How do the characteristics of housing and their evolution impact choices in terms of fertility?

From the conference, we hope to initiate a collective reflection allowing all those participating in land use planning to better interpret interactions linking space, populations and societies and, thus, providing them with some diagnostic tools which could help them cope with and anticipate contemporary and future dynamics in their fields of expertise more effectively.

Submission guidelines

Proposals for papers should be no more than three pages long. They will present the issue, the objectives, the data and the methods employed, as well as a brief bibliography.

At the end of the conference, a selection of papers will be incorporated into the publication of a special issue of the journal devoted to this theme.

En 2018, Espace populations sociétés (EPS) fêtera ses 35 ans. À cette occasion, la revue organise un colloque à Lille les 28 et 29 mars 2018.

Mais trois termes qui ne sont pour EPS séparés par aucune ponctuation, comme pour mieux souligner que dans bien des cas, chacun d’eux ne peut être saisi sans appréhender les deux autres. De fait, la revue a été un lieu de rencontres pluridisciplinaires où l’objet de recherche fut souvent l’interaction entre espace, populations et sociétés. Cette interaction constitue précisément l’objet du colloque.

Enjeu du colloque

Les projets de communication attendus pour ce colloque devront appréhender sous un angle dynamique l’interaction entre espace, populations et sociétés. Cette interaction pourra être appréhendée de manière historique, ou bien privilégier les dynamiques contemporaines ou encore avoir un caractère prospectif. Elle pourra être saisie à l’échelle locale ou à des niveaux géographiques plus agrégés, dans les pays du Sud ou du Nord. Outre des communications présentant des résultats, les interventions d’ordre méthodologique consacrées aux moyens de saisir ces interactions sont également les bienvenues.

Axes thématiques proposés

Trois approches sont proposées :

• L’effet des évolutions sociétales sur la dynamique démographique ou/et spatiale. Par exemple, dans quelle mesure la motorisation des populations ou l’attrait pour la propriété d’une maison individuelle ont pesé dans la localisation des ménages dans les espaces périurbain et rural ? Quel fut l’impact de la réduction du temps de travail sur le développement de territoires touristiques ? Comment la socialisation différenciée et la crainte de l’altérité peuvent entrainer des phénomènes de segmentation de l’espace résidentiel allant même jusqu’ à la création de zones de repli des plus aisées (les gated communities) et d’exclusion de populations stigmatisées (les populations d’origine immigrée par exemple) ?
• L’effet des évolutions démographiques sur les dynamiques sociétales ou/et spatiales. Par exemple, comment les mouvements internationaux contraints par des événements historiques (les migrations de personnes qui fuient des conflits), les migrations régionales pour répondre à des exigences économiques (la nécessité de se rendre dans un bassin d’emploi important) ou encore au niveau local les changements de résidence liés aux parcours de vie se traduisent sur la composition sociodémographique des territoires ? Comment les nouvelles populations s’inscrivent-elles dans l’espace et les sociétés qui les accueillent et quelles conséquences peuvent-elles avoir sur le plan spatial (par exemple les camps de migrants sauvages au sein mêmes des villes françaises ou les zones d’habitat informel dans les grandes métropoles du Sud) ?
• L’effet des (ré)aménagements de l’espace sur les dynamiques démographiques et sociétales. Par exemple, quel peut être l’impact sur la socialisation des individus de la destruction d’un quartier ancien et la relocalisation de ses habitants comme cela fut observé à Pékin avant les Jeux Olympiques de 2008 ? Quelles conséquences sur la dynamique résidentielle peut avoir la localisation (ou la délocalisation) d’infrastructures publiques ? Au niveau local, quel effet une politique municipale visant à valoriser son patrimoine culturel peut avoir sur l’attractivité résidentielle des centres historiques ? Après contrôle des facteurs socioéconomiques, comment les caractéristiques environnementales et culturelles du lieu où résident les populations influencent-elles leur santé et leur mortalité ? Comment les caractéristiques du logement et leurs évolutions impactent-elles les choix en matière de fécondité ?

Au terme du colloque, nous espérons produire une réflexion d’ensemble pouvant permettre à tous ceux qui participent à l’aménagement du territoire d’avoir une meilleure lecture des interactions qui lient l’espace, les populations et les sociétés et ainsi leur donner des éléments de diagnostic pouvant les aider à mieux accompagner et anticiper les dynamiques contemporaines et futures de leurs périmètres de compétence.

A l’issue du colloque, une sélection de communications sera effectuée. Les textes retenus seront publiés dans un numéro spécial de la revue Espace Populations Sociétés consacré à la thématique abordée.
