There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects. 

Argument

ESA is launching the latest phase of the ESA History Project. Building on the success of the previous phases, this new endeavour is marked by an opening to other domains in the humanities, while continuing to take a historical perspective and write the history of space activities, especially in and by Europe, with a view, notably, to supporting present and future decision-making.

To mark the launch of this new phase, an international conference is being planned for 23–24 November 2017 in Padua, Italy, in cooperation with the University of Padua and its Giuseppe Colombo University Centre for Space Studies and Activities.

In connection with the Conference, ESA is calling on early career scholars (generally up to the age of 35) and university students at Master’s level and onwards, from all over the world, who are writing on subjects related to space activities, to submit their work to be considered for presentation at the conference and to enter the competition for best paper.

The winner of the prize for best paper will be offered a trip to Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, and/or the publication of their paper. For those young scholars invited to present their paper at the conference in Padua, a certain amount of travel support will be provided on request.

Submission guidelines

In order to enter, please submit the following items, by 30 August 2017 by email to: young.spacehistory@esa.int

•  An abstract of your work in English
•  Affiliation and description of the framework in which the work is being conducted
•  An endorsement of your academic supervisor (if applicable)
•  A short motivation letter

Those selected will be notified by 20 September 2017. Then you should submit by 15 October 2017:

•  A full paper in English or French
•  An executive summary in English
•  An evaluation letter from your academic supervisor (if applicable)

The History Project is coordinated at ESA by Nathalie Tinjod, and the third phase steered by an ESA History Project Academic Council (EHPAC), chaired by Professor John Krige. EHPAC is composed of distinguished scholars, from renowned universities, research institutes and museums, nominated by the ESA Director General for three years, as from January 2017. They are:

Argumento

El espacio es mucho más que ingeniería o astrofísica. Historiadores, diplomáticos, economistas, especialistas en Derecho, politólogos o sociólogos han contribuido a nuestra comprensión de la era espacial y de su impacto en nuestra sociedad a lo largo de las últimas décadas. 

Hoy, 60 años después de que el primer objeto construido por manos humanas comenzase a orbitar la Tierra, el espacio forma parte integral de nuestro día a día. La ciencia y la tecnología espaciales abarcan proyectos para toda la humanidad, llegando no solo hasta las fronteras de nuestra atmósfera, sino mucho más allá de nuestro Sistema Solar.

Aunque son los retos tecnológicos y científicos de trabajar, vivir y viajar por el espacio lo que motivan a los estudiantes a desarrollar este tipo de carreras, el impacto de la actividad espacial en nuestras vidas sobre la Tierra, en las relaciones entre Estados y organizaciones, y en nuestra historia reciente en conjunto, constituyen un terreno fértil para que estudiantes y académicos de los campos de las humanidades aborden temas relacionados con el espacio. 

La ESA ya ha lanzado la última fase de su Proyecto Historia. Gracias al éxito obtenido en las fases anteriores, este nuevo esfuerzo está marcado por la apertura a otros ámbitos de las humanidades, aunque sin perder la perspectiva histórica para escribir el devenir de las actividades espaciales, especialmente en lo relativo al papel de Europa y centrándose en el apoyo a la toma de decisiones presentes y futuras.

Para conmemorar el lanzamiento de esta nueva fase, está previsto celebrar una conferencia internacional los días 23 y 24 de noviembre de 2017 en Padua, Italia.  Tendrá lugar en la Universidad de Padua (UNIPD) y estará organizada en cooperación con su departamento de Ciencias Políticas, Derecho y Relaciones Internacionales (SPGI), y el Centro Universitario Giuseppe Colombo de Estudios y Actividades Espaciales (CISAS).

Convocamos a académicos noveles (normalmente, hasta los 35 años de edad) y a estudiantes universitarios a partir del nivel de máster, de todo el mundo y que escriban sobre temas relacionados con las actividades espaciales, a enviar sus trabajos para su consideración y posible presentación en la conferencia, así como para concursar por el mejor artículo.

El ganador del premio al mejor artículo podrá disfrutar de un viaje al Puerto Espacial Europeo de Kourou, Guayana Francesa, y de la publicación de su documento. En cuanto a los jóvenes académicos invitados a presentar sus artículos en la conferencia de Padua, se les ofrecerá cierta ayuda de transporte si así lo solicitan.

Modalidades de sumisión

Para poder participar, es necesario enviar la siguiente documentación antes del 30 de agosto de 2017 por correo electrónico a: young.spacehistory@esa.int 

• un resumen del trabajo en inglés
• afiliación y descripción del marco en el que se está llevando a cabo el trabajo
• una carta de apoyo de su supervisor académico (si se diera el caso)
• una breve carta de motivación

Las personas seleccionadas recibirán una notificación antes del 20 de septiembre de 2017. A continuación, deberá enviarse antes del 15 de octobre de 2017:

• el artículo completo en inglés o francés
• un resumen ejecutivo en inglés
• una carta de evaluación de su supervisor académico

La tercera fase del Proyecto Historia está coordinada en la ESA por Nathalie Tinjod y está dirigida por el Consejo Académico del Proyecto Historia de la ESA (EHPAC), presidido por el profesor John Krige. Argument

De ruimte draait om meer dan alleen raketten. Historici, diplomaten, economen, rechtenstudenten, politicologen en sociologen hebben allemaal hun steentje bijgedragen aan het verbeteren van ons begrip van de ruimte. Hun werk heeft de afgelopen decennia een belangrijke impact gehad op onze maatschappij.

Zestig jaar nadat het eerste door mensen gemaakte voorwerp in een baan om de aarde werd gebracht is de ruimtevaart een onmiskenbaar onderdeel van ons dagelijks leven. Ruimtevaartwetenschappen en -technologie worden ingezet ten gunste van de hele mensheid. Projecten reiken niet alleen tot buiten de aardse atmosfeer, maar ook ver voorbij ons eigen zonnestelsel.

De technologische en wetenschappelijke uitdagingen van het werken, wonen en reizen in de ruimte zijn van nature interessant voor studenten die in deze vakgebieden actief zijn. Maar ook de impact van ruimtevaart op ons dagelijks leven, de verhoudingen tussen landen en organisaties en onze collectieve geschiedenis zijn dankbare onderwerpen voor studenten en academici in de humane wetenschappen.

De Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie ESA staat op het punt de laatste fase van zijn History Project in te gaan. Deze slotfase wordt gekenmerkt door een openstelling voor andere domeinen in de humane wetenschap. Tegelijkertijd wordt verder gegaan met het scheppen van een historisch perspectief op de ruimtevaartactiviteiten in en van Europa, met in het bijzonder het doel huidige en toekomstige beslissingen te ondersteunen.

Om de start van deze nieuwe fase te vieren houdt ESA op 23 en 24 november 2017 een internationale conferentie in Italië. De conferentie wordt gehouden op de Universiteit van Padua (UNIPD) en wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met diens faculteit Politicologie, Recht en Internationale Studies. Ook het Giuseppe Colombo centrum voor ruimtevaartstudies en -activiteiten (CISAS) werkt daaraan mee.

We roepen jonge academici (doorgaans tot 35 jaar oud) en universitaire studenten op master-niveau van over de hele wereld op hun aan de ruimtevaart gelieerde onderzoek in te sturen. Inzenders maken kans op een uitnodiging om hun onderzoek te komen presenteren op de conferentie. Daar dingt het onderzoek vervolgens mee in de strijd om de titel van beste paper.

De winnaar van die prijs mag op bezoek bij de Europese ruimtehaven in het Frans-Guyaanse Kourou en/of kan zijn onderzoekspaper laten publiceren. Jonge academici die uitgenodigd worden om hun paper op de conferentie in Padua te komen presenteren, ontvangen indien gewenst ondersteuning voor hun reis.

Indieningsprocedures

Papers kunnen tot 30 augustus 2017 per e-mail ingestuurd worden naar young.spacehistory@esa.int. De inzending moet bestaan uit:

• een in het Engels geschreven abstract van je werk;
• een omschrijving van het kader waarin het onderzoek uitgevoerd wordt;
• een onderschrijving van je academische leidinggevende (indien van toepassing);
• een korte motivatiebrief.

Inzenders krijgen uiterlijk 20 september 2017 te horen of hun paper geselecteerd is voor de conferentie. Kandidaten die uitgenodigd worden om op de conferentie te komen spreken dienen voor 15 oktober 2017 de volgende items in te zenden:

• het volledige paper, in het Engels of Frans;
• een samenvatting in het Engels;
• een evaluatiebrief van je academisch leidinggevende (indien van toepassing).

We zien ernaar uit de bijdragen te ontvangen. Eventuele vragen kunnen gestuurd worden naar het mailadres hieronder.

De derde fase van ESA's History Project wordt bij ESA gecoördineerd door Nathalie Tinjod en gestuurd door de ESA History Project Academic Council (EHPAC), waarvan professor John Krige voorzitter is.
