The ERC Consolidator Grant project HORNEAST. Horn & Crescent. Connections, Mobility and Exchange between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East in the Middle Ages (P.I. Julien Loiseau) offers a three-years post-doctoral fellowship (first term 31 August 2018, renewable).

The ERC project HORNEAST aims at evidencing local and global connections between the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Nubia) and its Islamic environment (in Egypt, Palestine and Arabian Peninsula) in the Middle Ages (7^th to 15^th Century), for a better understanding of the Islamisation process in the whole area and of African Christianities’ resiliency and reconfiguration at the same time.

Sought profile

The post-doctoral researcher will be fully engaged in the project’s stages 1 (Evidencing connections between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East) and 2 (Investigating crossroads outside the Horn of Africa). He/she should have a PhD in the field of Ethiopian studies (history or philology) and a good command of Ge’ez and its reading in manuscripts.

Job description

Based in the research team at Aix-Marseille University, he/she will be involved in research missions in Ethiopia, Egypt and Israel. He/she will be expected to develop his/her own research project within the ERC project HORNEAST, to publish at least three individually authored articles in leading international journals and to produce a monograph (which might be or not the publication of his/her PhD dissertation) by the end of the contract. He/she will actively participate in the project workshops and conferences and in the editing of their proceedings.

Compensation details

He/she will be supported to participate to any relevant scholarly meetings.

The monthly salary is about 2.700 euros gross on a full-time basis.

Profil recherché

Le chercheur ou la chercheuse en post-doctorat participera à l’étape 1 (Evidencing connections between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East) et à l’étape 2 (Investigating crossroads outside the Horn of Africa) du projet ERC HORNEAST. Titulaire d’une thèse de doctorat en histoire ou philologie sur la Corne de l’Afrique, il/elle aura une très bonne maîtrise des sources manuscrites en ge’ez. Intégré à l’équipe du projet à Aix-Marseille Université, il/elle sera amené à effectuer des missions d’étude en Éthiopie, Égypte et Israël.

Mission du candidat

Il/elle poursuivra son projet de recherche personnel au sein du projet ERC HORNEAST, s’engage à soumettre au moins trois articles dans des revues à comité de lecture et à préparer une monographie (publication de la thèse ou autre) au terme des trois ans de contrat. Il/elle participera aux rencontres scientifiques du projet et à leur publication.

Conditions d'emploi

Il/elle bénéficiera d’un soutien financier pour participer à toute rencontre scientifique pertinente dans le cadre du projet.

Le contrat sera rémunéré environ 2 700 euros bruts par mois à plein temps.
