Description

NYU Paris is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach the following course in Linguistics: "The Languages of Paris." This course presents the linguistic situation in greater Paris from the perspective of urban sociolinguistics.  Topics include the range of French dialects spoken in Paris, their origins and their future; the linguistic situation of immigrants whose first language is not French, particularly immigrant communities from North Africa and Arabic-speaking communities; the connections between language and social and educational issues within and around Paris.

There is no single textbook available that covers these topics, so the readings would need to be assembled from different sources.  For the dialects of French spoken in Paris, a recommended reference is:  Lodge, R. Anthony. A sociolinguistic history of Parisian French. St. Martin's Griffin, 2004.

Teaching commences in September 2018; courses meet for 3 hours a week for a 14.5 week term.  The course is taught in English.

NYU Paris is one of 11 study away academic centers in the NYU Global Network. Students at NYU Paris participate in an immersive study away program while earning credits towards their degree. To learn more about NYU Paris please visit the website at https://www.nyu.edu/paris.html.
