This international workshop proposes a collective work at the crossroads of the different economic, political, family, military and cultural networks which constituted the changing and complex context of the life of Ambrogio Spinola, a man of immense fortune and unknown military qualities. His framework? Italy, Flanders, Spain. Scholars with different, although complementary, historiographical approaches will gather around Spinola, aiming to publish a collective biography in 2020. This biography will be the result of an interdisciplinary work, mixing the knowledge of historians of the military, diplomacy, aristocracy or economics, but also using the history of news (creation and circulation), written and pictorial culture, or gender history.

Argumentaire

Trop souvent encore l’Europe des Etats-nation du XIXe siècle projette ses bornes sur la première modernité en cloisonnant arbitrairement des individus et des phénomènes qui se développèrent dans des contextes aux frontières beaucoup plus mobiles et poreuses. L’Europe ibérique, avec les possessions espagnoles en Italie et dans les Flandres, en est un exemple majeur : dans un jeu d’échelles que l’historien doit garder à l’esprit, maints individus ont construit leurs identité personnelle, familiale et professionnelle par des aller/retour constants entre le système socio-culturel de leur naissance et des réseaux beaucoup plus larges. A une époque caractérisée par l’omniprésence de la guerre et par la recherche laborieuse de l’argent pour la financer, suivre les pas des entrepreneurs militaires, des diplomates, des banquiers -avec leurs réseaux financiers-, des grandes familles construisant de véritables stratégies collectives sur la gloire et les alliances issues des conflits armés, signifie prendre au sérieux la complexité mobile de ces cadres de vie et d’action.

Plusieurs portes d’entrée sont envisageables pour un récit historique qui veut intégrer cette complexité de regard posé sur le passé. L’une est celle de la biographie.

En 2008,  Davide Maffi écrivait un essai important sur les militaires italiens au service du roi d’Espagne dans les Flandres entre la fin du XVIIe et le XVIIIe siècle (Cacciatori di Gloria, in Italiani al servizio straniero in età moderna). A cette occasion, il soulignait le manque étonnant d’une biographie récente du génois Ambrogio Spinola (1569-1630), général de l’armée des Flandres et premier marquis de los Balbases. Il fallait donner une suite à la Vie qu’Antonio Rodríguez Villa avait publiée en 1904. Entretemps, certaines études ont vu le jour. Elles sont consacrées aux faits d’armes qui virent la participation de Spinola et notamment au parcours qui l’emmena à sa première victoire militaire à Ostende en 1604. Une victoire qui changea le regard de ses contemporains sur le banquier italien (en part. Asuncion Retortillo Atienza, Ambrosio Spínola de Génova a Ostende, 2017).

Des spécialistes aux perspectives historiographiques différentes et complémentaires se réuniront donc autours de Spinola, avec l’objectif d’une biographie chorale qui sera publiée en 2020. Cette biographie se veut le résultat d’un travail interdisciplinaire, mobilisant des historiens du fait militaire, de la diplomatie, des aristocraties transfrontalières et des réseaux financiers, mais aussi de l’histoire de l’information (création et circulation), de la culture écrite et par images, du genre.

Tout en restant fermement concentré sur la figure du général italien, compte tenu de l’approche systémique du projet, le cadre temporel retenu ira de la naissance de Spinola en 1569 à la mort de sa fille Polissena Spinola en 1639. Ce petit débordement temporel permettra de vérifier les conséquences et les appropriations des actions du père par ses enfants et plus en général par la génération qui le suivi. L’option de fond pour une histoire qui dépasse les frontières se traduira aussi par la mise en avant de la triangulation entre Gênes et l’Italie espagnole, l’Espagne et les Flandres. Une triangulation qui fut propre à Ambrogio Spinola et à sa famille; et plus en général aux élites économiques, sociales et guerrières de la première modernité.

L’atelier sera organisé autour de quatre axes mettant en avant les différents réseaux qui firent le cadre de vie d’Ambrogio Spinola entre Gênes, l’Espagne et les Flandres. Toute proposition d’intervention devra entrer dans l’une de ces thématiques.

• Ambrogio et les Spinola de San Luca. Stratégies familiales, genre et réseaux
• Banquiers et états. Les réseaux financiers et politiques
• Spinola et ses réseaux en tant qu’entrepreneur militaire et stratège
• Construction de la mémoire et appropriations de/s image/s d’Ambrogio Spinola

Modalités de soumission

Plusieurs collègues ont déjà confirmé leur participation. Les organisateurs tiennent à intégrer des communications par des collègues qui répondront à cet appel à communication. Les propositions des jeunes chercheurs (phD et postDOC) seront privilégiées. Il est prévu l’octroi de quelque bourse pour couvrir les frais de voyage et/ou de séjour.

Argument

Usually, the European Nation-States of the Nineteenth Century project their birth to the Early Modernity. As a result, it is created an artificial division on people and facts developed in a more movable and porous context. The Iberian Europe, with the Spanish dominions in Italy and Flanders is a good example. In many ways, and in a game that the historian shall keep in mind, countless of individuals created their personal, family and professional identities in a constant exchange between the socio-cultural systems of their places of origin and larger networks. In a time characterized by the omnipresence of war and by the laborious search of money to finance it, following the path of military entrepreneurs, diplomats, bankers –with their financial networks–, and great families –who built collective strategies over glory and alliances on military conflicts– will be showed the complexities of these frameworks of living and action.

Several ways of study are possible to create an historical account, which will integrate the complexity of looking on to the past. One of them is the biography.

In 2008, Davide Maffi wrote a path-breaking essay about the Italian military men who served to the Spanish king in Flanders during the Seventeenth Century (Cacciatori di Gloria, in Italiani al servizio straniero in età moderna). On it, he underlined the surprising lack of a recent biography of the Genoese Ambrogio Spinola (1569-1630), General of the Army of Flanders and first Marquis of Balbases. It was necessary to integrate the biography that Antonio Rodríguez Villa published in 1904. Afterwards some studies have been published. They are devoted to the feats of arms in which Spinola took part. Particularly to Ostend (1604), his first victory. It showed to his contemporaries the military skills of the Italian banker (Asunción Retortillo Atienza, Ambrosio Spínola de Génova a Ostende, 2017).

This international workshop proposes a collective work at the crossroads of the different economic, political, family, military and cultural networks which constituted the changing and complex context of the life of Ambrogio Spinola, a man of immense fortune and unknown military qualities.

Scholars with different, although complementary, historiographical approaches will gather around Spinola, aiming to publish a collective biography in 2020. This biography will be the result of an interdisciplinary work, mixing the knowledge of historians of the military, diplomacy, aristocracy or economics, but also using the history of news (creation and circulation), written and pictorial culture, or gender history.

While remaining firmly focused on the figure of the Italian general, given the systematic approach of the project, the chosen timeframe will range from the birth of Spinola in 1569, to the death of his daughter Polissena Spinola in 1639. This small temporal overflow will show the consequences of the actions of the father and how his children appropriated them, more specifically by the generation that followed him. The bottom-line option for a history that transcended borders will also result in the highlighting of the triangulation between Italy, Spain and Flanders. A triangulation that was specific to Ambrogio Spinola and his family, but also to the economical, social and warlike elites of the first modernity.

The workshop will be organized around four areas, highlighting the different networks that made the living environment of Ambrogio Spinola between Genoa, Spain and Flanders. Any proposal should be among one of these lines.

• Spinola and his network as military entrepreneur and strategist

Several colleagues have already confirmed their participation. We invite proposals for papers by

Friday 21th December 2018.

Proposals from young researchers (phD and postDOC) will be favoured.

It is planned to award some scholarships to cover travel and/or accommodation expenses.

All proposals must indicate:

• Provisional title
• Abstract of about 400 words
• Thematic concerned among the four above-mentioned themes
• 500-character bio-bibliography of the speaker
