Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency » (MAP – 741182) propose un contrat doctoral dans le domaine de l’histoire des religions anciennes. Le projet de thèse reposera sur l’étude d’un corpus substantiel d’inscriptions provenant des colonies grecques fondées au Proche-Orient, dans une aire comprise entre la Syrie et l’Indus. The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) offers a funded PhD position in the field of History of Ancient Religions, to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months in Toulouse (France). The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods. 

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant « Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency » (MAP – 741182) explore les systèmes de dénomination du divin dans les mondes sémitiques grec et occidental, de 1000 avant notre ère à 400 de notre ère. Les séquences onomastiques utilisées pour les dieux montrent comment les pouvoirs divins sont construits, organisés et impliqués dans les rituels. L’analyse porte sur les aspects structurels des systèmes religieux et sur leur appropriation contextuelle par les agents sociaux. Considérés comme les éléments d’un langage complexe, les noms donnent accès à un processus de cartographie du divin, à ses modes de représentation et aux stratégies de communication entre les hommes et les dieux.

Présentation et objectifs

Le doctorat sera positionné dans le domaine de l’histoire des religions anciennes, dans le cadre des thèmes de recherche du projet MAP ; il sera dirigé par la Prof. Corinne Bonnet (Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès), avec éventuellement une co-direction ou co-tutelle.

Le poste sera pourvu pour le 1^er octobre 2019 et pour une période de 36 mois, selon les dispositions légales encadrant le contrat doctoral, notamment pour la rémunération (http://www.enseignementsup-recherche.gouv.fr/cid76053/le-financement-doctoral.html).

Le projet de thèse reposera sur l’étude d’un corpus substantiel d’inscriptions provenant des colonies grecques fondées au Proche-Orient, dans une aire comprise entre la Syrie et l’Indus. Il s’agira d’analyser par ce biais l’implantation et les formes de culte de dieux grecs et non grecs. En fonction de son champ d’expertise, le candidat délimitera plus précisément un domaine précis et une thématique pertinente. L’accent sera mis sur la période hellénistique et romaine. Les inscriptions en langue grecque seront systématiquement recueillies, étudiées et enregistrées dans la base de données du projet MAP, en prêtant une attention particulière aux séquences onomastiques utilisées pour les dieux. Les inscriptions en araméen, phénicien ou autres langues « indigènes », ainsi que les bilingues seront étudiées, en collaboration avec l’équipe du projet MAP.

Différentes questions pourront être abordées, touchant à la relation entre les séquences onomastiques et l’environnement politique, économique ou militaire. Le corpus contribuera en outre à une meilleure compréhension du processus de traductibilité des noms divins et d’interpretatio. Une attention particulière sera aussi portée aux agents impliqués dans les inscriptions et aux réseaux de dieux décelables via les éléments onomastiques. Les relations entre noms divins et iconographie pourront également être considérées.

Le candidat retenu participera aussi aux activités de recherche du projet MAP, sera impliqué dans les recherches collectives et nourrira la base de données avec l’équipe

Prérequis

• Diplôme de Master avec mention en histoire ancienne, histoire des religions ou dans une discipline connexe.
• Excellente connaissance du grec ancien et éventuellement, mais pas nécessairement, d’une langue sémitique.
• Connaissance du français, de l’anglais et d’autres langues pertinentes pour la recherche prévue.
• Volonté de coopérer au projet MAP et de prendre part aux activités collectives.

The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) explores the naming systems for the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds, from 1000 BCE to 400 CE. Onomastic sequences used for the gods show how divine powers are constructed, arranged and involved within rituals. The analysis deals with the structural aspects of religious systems and with their contextual appropriation by social agents. Considered to be the elements of a complex language, the names give access to a mapping process of the divine, to its ways of representation and to the communication strategies between men and gods.

Presentation and objectives

The PhD will be located in the field of History of Ancient Religions, within the framework of the research project MAP, directed by Prof. Corinne Bonnet (Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès), with the possibility of a co-director.

The position is to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months, according to the legal framework of the doctoral contract, namely for what concerns the salary

The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods. According to his/her specific expertise, the candidate will choose a relevant area within this large framework. The chronological focus will be the Hellenistic and Roman period. Greek inscriptions will be systematically gathered, studied and registered in the database of the MAP project, with a special attention paid to the onomastic sequences used for the gods. Bilingual inscriptions, with Aramaic, Phoenician, or other “indigenous” idioms, will possibly be analyzed, in collaboration with the MAP team.

Different issues will be addressed, such as the relation between the onomastic sequences and the political, economic, military environment. The corpus will probably contribute to a better understanding of the process of translatability and interpretatio. A special attention will be paid to the agents involved in the inscriptions and to the networks of gods designed by the onomastic elements. The relationship between divine names and iconography may also be considered.

The successful candidate will participate in the project’s research activities, engage in joint research and fill in the database with the MAP team.

Requirements

• Excellent MA degree in Ancient History, History of Religions or a closely related discipline.
• Excellent knowledge of Ancient Greek and possibly, but not necessarily, of some Semitic language.
• Knowledge of French and English, and other languages relevant for the research planned.
• Willingness to cooperate within the research project and to take part in the activities of MAP.
