What are parents’ motives to educate without school ? Among the most spontaneously questions addressed to homeschooling, this question has been one of the most researched by scholars, particularly in the United States. Thinking in terms of parental “choice”, “reasons”, “motivations” or “decisions” electing alternative education leads however to conceptual and empirical challenges. To discuss these theoretical and methodological issues of the scientific study of “parental alternative choices”, the workshop gathers researchers whose investigations, about parents who home educate and/or parents who school their children in alternative schools, use diverse concepts or techniques.

Pourquoi des parents choisissent-ils de ne pas scolariser leur enfant ? 

Cette question, parmi les plus spontanément adressées au homeschooling, a suscité de nombreuses enquêtes empiriques, en particulier aux États-Unis.

Raisonner en termes de « choix », « raisons », « motivations » ou « décisions » des parents en faveur d’une éducation alternative ne va pourtant pas de soi.

Pour examiner les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques de l’étude scientifique de ces « choix alternatifs », le workshop réunit des chercheuses et chercheurs dont les enquêtes, au sujet de parents qui instruisent leur enfant hors école ou bien qui les scolarisent dans des établissements alternatifs, mobilisent des concepts ou techniques d’enquêtes variées. 

Cet atelier bénéficie du soutien de l’Université Paris-Seine (INEX-2018-PE80) ainsi que de l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR-18-CE28-0014).
