Le séminaire ERC MAP « Noms de dieux ! » 4 : Explorer les potentialités du nom : mises en images, mises en récits poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin. En gravitant autour des noms, des images et des récits, on partira à la recherche de correspondances mais aussi d’écarts, afin de souligner, au départ de cas ou de dossiers dûment choisis, les spécificités des différents langages mobilisés pour déployer les potentialités des noms divins. Dans l’esprit du projet MAP, on prêtera une attention particulière aux relations que traduisent les noms, les images et les récits.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

Projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency ; 741182) travaille sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin dans les mondes grec et sémitique de l’ouest, de 1000 av. à 400 ap. n.è., et les envisage comme des témoignages de la manière dont les puissances divines sont construites, agencées et mobilisées, en particulier dans le cadre rituel. L’analyse porte à la fois sur les aspects structurels des systèmes religieux et sur leur appropriation contextuelle par des agents sociaux. Considérées comme les éléments d’un langage complexe, les séquences onomastiques se rapportant aux dieux donnent ainsi accès à une cartographie du divin, à ses modes de représentation et aux stratégies de communication entre hommes et dieux.

Argumentaire

Dans une lettre (Julien, Lettres 89b, 291 b) où il fustige le comportement incohérent de ses contemporains, qui invoquent Zeus xenios et sont plus inhospitaliers que les Scythes eux-mêmes, Julien affirme que « les dénominations (epônumias) des dieux nous offrent comme autant d’images dessinées/écrites (hôsper eikonas graptas) ». Il établit ainsi un lien entre les noms et les images que le Séminaire 4 du projet MAP entend explorer. En partant du principe que les dieux ne sont pas des personnes, mais des puissances, on embrasse d’emblée la complexité des « signaux » véhiculés par les séquences onomastiques, simples ou complexes, qui désignent les dieux. Car, comme l’affirme Euripide, dans les Bacchantes (1388-1391) et dans d’autres tragédies (Alceste, Andromaque, Hélène et Médée)¸ « multiples (sont) les formes des dieux (daimoniôn), multiples, les effets imprévus de ce que les dieux ordonnent ; ce que l’on escomptait ne s’est pas accompli ; de l’inattendu, le dieu a découvert la voie ».

C’est la voie de l’inattendu que nous souhaitons emprunter dans le cadre du Séminaire, en travaillant sur une triangulation que nous pensons féconde : les noms donnent lieu à des images, des représentations qui, dans leur grande diversité, sont autant de « lectures » possibles des virtualités véhiculées par une désignation comme « Baal des cieux », « Zeus euruopa » ou « YHWH Sabaoth ». Parallèlement, et parfois en relation, avec les mises en images, les noms suscitent des récits qui ont vocation à fonder, expliquer, contextualiser le recours à tel ou tel attribut onomastique et/ou iconographique. À l’inverse, des récits sur les noms divins peuvent inspirer les artistes. Bref, les mises en récits et les mises en images des potentialités propres aux noms divins, très souvent et délibérément polysémiques, ont alimenté un corpus considérable de données qu’il convient d’exploiter ; de nouvelles approches s’efforcent de relever ce défi, comme l’exégèse iconographique des textes. Ces informations constituent autant de fragments de connaissance, autant de conjectures et de tentatives d’interprétation d’un divin foncièrement inaccessible aux hommes tant sa complexité protéiforme défie l’entendement. Dans ce que Robert Parker qualifie d’« archipel », les images et les récits sont comme des boussoles pour approcher le monde divin.

Nous entendons donc graviter autour des noms, des images et des récits à la recherche de correspondances mais aussi d’écarts, afin de souligner, au départ de cas ou de dossiers dûment choisis, les spécificités des différents langages mobilisés pour déployer les potentialités des noms divins. Dans l’esprit du projet MAP, on prêtera une attention particulière aux relations que traduisent les noms, les images et les récits. Car loin de trancher, d’isoler, d’essentialiser les figures divines, le fait de les nommer, de les raconter ou de les « imaginer » revient plutôt à les situer au sein d’une toile, à décrypter un signal auquel un autre signal fait écho, comme des phares au sein d’un vaste archipel. Une fois encore, aborder ces questions invite à réfléchir à l’articulation entre unité et pluralité du divin, un fil rouge qu’inlassablement le projet MAP déroule.

Enfin, on approchera le dialogue entre noms, images et récits en contexte, en situation rituelle tout spécialement, afin d’en mesurer l’agentivité et l’impact tout à la fois. Spiraler autour des dieux en expérimentant diverses formes de discours et d’action, c’est aussi leur donner corps, les entourer d’objets puissants, construire leur pouvoir performatif à la croisée des images et des mots.

Le Séminaire prendra la forme de Journées d’étude mensuelles, d’octobre 2019 à mai 2020. Deux invités y interviendront à chaque fois, un le matin, un l’après-midi, en disposant chacun d’un temps de parole d’une heure, suivie d’une heure d’échange.

ERC Advanced Grant MAP project

The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182) works on the systems of naming of the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds (ca. 1000 BCE – ca. 400 CE). Those systems of denomination are considered as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and mobilized, especially in ritual contexts. The analysis covers both the structural aspects of religious systems and their contextual appropriation by social agents. As elements of a complex language, onomastic sequences relating to the gods thus give access to a mapping of the divine, to its modes of representation and to the strategies of communication between men and gods.

Argumentation

In a letter (Julian, Letters 89b, 291 b) where he criticises the inconsistent behaviour of his contemporaries, who invoke Zeus Xenios and are more inhospitable than the Scythians themselves, Julian affirms that “the names (epônumias) of the gods offer us many drawn/written images (hôsper eikonas graptas)”. He established a link between names and images, which is what Seminar 4 of the MAP project aims to explore. Under the assumption that the gods are not people, but powers, we at once embrace the complexity of the “signals” driven by the onomastic sequences, simple or complex, which identify the gods. Thus, as confirmed by Euripides in The Bacchae (1388-1391) and in other tragedies (Alcestis, Andromache, Helen and Medea), “the forms of gods (daimoniôn) are multiple, as are the unforeseen effects of what the gods command; what was expected of them was not fulfilled; from the unexpected, the god itself has discovered the path”.

It is, specifically, the unexpected path that we want to examine within the framework of the Seminar by working on a triangulation that we consider to be fruitful: names give way to images, representations which, in their great diversity are, in as much, possible “readings” of the potentials driven by names like “Baal, Lord of the Heavens”, “Zeus Europa “ or “YHWH Sabaoth”. In parallel, and often in relation, with the images, the names arouse narratives which are intended to establish, explain and contextualise the use of one onomastic and/or iconographic attribute or another. Conversely, narratives about divine names can inspire artists. In any case, narratives and images of the potentials belonging to divine names, which are both frequent and deliberately polysemous, have fuelled a considerable corpus of data that it is worth exploiting; new approaches attempt to meet this challenge, such as the iconographic exegesis of texts. These pieces of information are fragments of knowledge, estimates and attempts to interpret a divinity which is fundamentally inaccessible to men, as its multifaceted complexity defies comprehension. In what Robert Parker describes as “archipelago”, the images and the narratives are like compasses used to approach the divine world.

We therefore hope to focus on names, images and narratives, seeking connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey. As, far from judging, isolating and essentialising the divine figures, naming them, narrating them or “imagining” is rather to place them at the heart of a canvas, to decipher a signal which is then echoed by another signal, like lighthouses within a vast archipelago. Once again, approaching these matters invites us to reflect upon the link between unity and plurality of the divine, a common theme that the MAP project continues to relentlessly unfold.

Ultimately, we will approach the dialogue between names, images and narratives in context, specifically in a ritual situation, in order to measure the agency and the impact simultaneously. To spiral around the gods, using different forms of speech and action is also to give them form, to surround them with powerful objects and to construct their performative power using images and words.

The Seminar will be carried out in the form of monthly study workshops, from October 2019 to May 2020. Two guests will intervene each time, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each one allocated a speaking time of one hour, followed by one hour of discussion.
