The ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

Le projet ERC MAP

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency ; 741182) travaille sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin dans les mondes grec et sémitique de l’ouest, de 1000 av. à 400 ap. n.è. et les envisage comme des témoignages de la manière dont les puissances divines sont construites, agencées et mobilisées dans le rituel en particulier. L’analyse porte à la fois sur les aspects structurels des systèmes religieux et sur leur appropriation contextuelle par des acteurs sociaux. Considérées comme les éléments d’un langage complexe, les séquences onomastiques se rapportant aux dieux donnent ainsi accès à une cartographie du divin, à ses modes de représentation et aux stratégies de communication entre hommes et dieux.

Présentation et objectifs

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 dispose d’un support budgétaire destiné à inviter des chercheurs dans ses locaux. Les séjours peuvent être d’une durée de 2 à 4 mois, en dehors des mois de juillet et août (en raison de la fermeture de l’université une grande partie de l’été). Les chercheurs invités participeront à l’enrichissement de la base de données MAP et travailleront au sein de l’équipe.

Cet appel à candidature s’adresse à toute personne, française ou étrangère, titulaire d’un Doctorat (ou diplôme équivalent) dont les compétences et le projet sont jugés intéressants pour le projet MAP :

• Pour le terrain d’enquête sémitique, les candidats devront avoir une excellente connaissance d’une ou plusieurs des langues sémitiques suivantes : punique et néopunique, araméen impérial (d’époques perse et hellénistique), nabatéen, et proposer un projet portant sur un corpus épigraphique régional dans une de ces langues.
• Pour le terrain d’enquête grec, les candidats devront avoir une excellente connaissance du grec ancien et proposer un projet portant sur un corpus épigraphique régional, de préférence parmi les aires suivantes : Péloponnèse, Grèce centrale, Grèce du Nord (Macédoine, Thrace), Pont, Crète, Cyclades, Asie Mineure (Carie, Ionie, Cilicie…).

Candidatures

Le dossier de candidature, sous forme d’un document PDF unique, doit comporter les pièces suivantes dans l’ordre indiqué :

1. Formulaire de candidature dûment signé ;
2. Brève présentation quantitative et qualitative du/des corpus que le candidat pense traiter (1 page) et articulation des recherches du candidat avec les recherches de l’équipe MAP (1 page).
3. Dates prévisionnelles du séjour, comprises entre le 4 janvier et le 17 décembre 2021 (juillet-août exclus).

Le nombre de candidatures n’est pas limité, mais les lauréats du programme en 2019 et 2020 ne peuvent pas candidater pour un second séjour.

Date limite de soumission des candidatures : 25 juin 2020.

Sélection

La sélection des dossiers présentés s’effectue selon les critères suivants, étant entendu que les dossiers incomplets ne seront pas pris en compte :

• Doctorat ou diplôme équivalent (les candidats dont la soutenance de thèse est prévue dans l’année 2020 peuvent postuler à condition qu’ils envoient une attestation de soutenance avant la date prévue de leur arrivée).
• Intérêt du corpus documentaire pour le projet MAP.
• Qualité scientifique du dossier.
• Priorité sera donnée aux personnes dont les compétences et les champs de recherche sont complémentaires par rapport à celles présentes dans l’équipe (cf. Présentation et objectifs).

Les résultats seront rendus le 16 juillet 2020.

Conditions de défraiement

Pour les chercheurs invités déjà affectés à un établissement de recherche : ils sont défrayés sur la base d’un montant forfaitaire maximal de 2000 € mensuels sur la base de justificatifs pour leurs frais de logement et de repas. S’y ajoute un autre montant forfaitaire maximal de leurs frais de voyage entre leur résidence et Toulouse (pour le voyage d’aller et de retour) :

• de 400 € pour un voyage depuis un pays européen (sur la base de justificatifs) ;
• de 800 € pour un voyage depuis un pays hors Europe (sur la base de justificatifs).

En aucun cas, l’allocation forfaitaire ne pourra couvrir une prolongation du séjour pour des convenances personnelles.

Pour les chercheurs sans affectation dans un établissement de recherche : dès validation de leur candidature, ils recevront une liste de documents à fournir, afin de préparer un contrat à durée déterminée (CDD) de la durée de leur séjour à Toulouse, qu’ils signeront à leur arrivée (environ 1800 € net mensuels). Ils ne pourront être défrayés de leurs frais de voyage.

L’université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès possède des partenariats permettant de louer des chambres d’hôtes ou des studios. Les chercheurs invités peuvent en faire la demande et l’équipe MAP fera la réservation, dans la limite des places disponibles.

Modalités administratives pour l’accueil du chercheur invité

1. Chaque chercheur invité retenu reçoit notification par le biais d’une lettre formelle du Principal Investigator (PI), Corinne Bonnet, stipulant les dates, les montants forfaitaires et les conditions d'accueil.
2. Lorsque que le chercheur invité a fixé les dates définitives de son séjour à Toulouse, il est tenu de transmettre les documents nécessaires à la prise en charge de son séjour, dès que possible, selon une liste qui lui est fournie. Dès son arrivée à l’université, l’équipe MAP prévient les instances compétentes pour la signature des différents documents nécessaires à sa prise en charge.
3. Les chercheurs invités sont tenus de transmettre les pièces justifiant de leur couverture médicale et de leur assurance responsabilité civile pendant leur séjour.
4. Le chercheur invité doit remettre une photographie et une courte biographie pour le site internet de l’équipe.
5. Les chercheurs invités remettront une page de rapport à Corinne Bonnet à l’issue de leur séjour.

The ERC MAP Project

The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182) works on the naming systems for the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds, from 1000 BCE to 400 CE and views them as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and involved especially within ritual. The analysis deals both with the structural aspects of the religious systems and with their contextual appropriation by social participants. Considered to be the elements of a complex language, the onomastic attributes are related to the gods, therefore providing access to a mapping process of the divine, to its ways of representation and to the communication strategies between men and gods.

Presentation and objectives

The ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will participate in the improvement of the MAP database and work within the team.

The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everyone, of French or foreign nationality, with a Doctorate Degree (or an equivalent degree) wherein the competence and project are deemed to be of interest for the MAP project:

• For the Semitic fieldwork, applicants should have excellent knowledge of one or more of the following Semitic languages: Punic and Neopunic, Imperial Aramaic (from the Persian and Hellenistic periods), Nabataean, and propose a project on a regional epigraphic corpus in one of these languages.
• For the Greek fieldwork, applicants should have excellent knowledge of Ancient Greek and propose a project on a regional epigraphic corpus, preferably from one of the following areas: Peloponnese, Central Greece, Northern Greece (Macedonia, Thrace), Pontus, Crete, Cyclades, Asia Minor (Caria, Ionia, Cilicia...).

Applicants

The application file, in the form of one single PDF document, should include the following elements in the given order:

1. Signed application form;
2. Brief quantitative and qualitative presentation of the corpus that the applicant intends to study (1 page) and the existing links between the applicant’s research and the MAP team’s research (1 page).
3. Provisional dates of the stay, from the 4th of January to the 17th of December, 2021.

The number of candidates is unlimited. However, those successful in the programme may not present themselves as candidates a second time.

Deadline for submission of applications: 25th of June, 2020.

Selection

The selection process for the files submitted will be carried out according to the following criteria, on the understanding that incomplete files will not be considered:

• Doctorate degree or equivalent degree (applicants who are due to defend their thesis in 2020 can apply as long as a certificate proving this completion is sent before the expected date of their arrival).
• Interest of body of documentation for the MAP project.
• Scientific quality of the file.
• Priority will be given to people who display competences that compliment those within the team (see Presentation and objectives).

The results will be published on the 16^th of July, 2020.

Expenses

For guest researchers who are already assigned to a research facility: they will receive a maximum fixed amount of €2000 per month based on proof of their accommodation and meal costs. A further maximum fixed amount is added to cover their travel expenses from their place of residence to Toulouse (round trip):

• €400 for travel from a European country (based on proof of expenses);
• €800 for travel from a country outside of Europe (based on proof of expenses);

Under no circumstances will the flat-rate amount cover an extension of the trip for personal reasons.

For researchers who are not assigned to a research facility: upon validation of their application, they will receive a list of documents which they must provide so that a fixed-term contract (CDD) can be drawn up covering the duration of their stay in Toulouse which they will sign when they arrive (salary around €1800 per month). Their travel expenses will not be reimbursed.

The Toulouse Jean Jaurès University has collaborations which enable the rental of guest rooms or studio apartments. Guest researchers can request this and the MAP Team will complete the reservation, subject to availability.

Administrative arrangements for reception of the guest researcher

1. Each guest researcher will receive notification through a formal letter from the Principal Investigator, Corinne Bonnet, stating the dates, the flat-rate amounts and conditions of reception and stay.
2. When the guest researcher has finalised the final dates of their stay at the university, they must provide the documents necessary for the management of their trip, as soon as possible, in accordance with a list provided with the formal letter from the PI. Once the guest researcher has arrived at the UT2J, the MAP Team is in charge of informing the appropriate authorities in order to sign the different documents which are required.
3. Guest researchers are obliged to provide documentation evidencing their medical coverage and liability insurance for the duration of the stay.
4. The guest researcher must submit a photograph and a short biography which will feature on the team’s website.
5. Guest researchers will provide Corinne Bonnet with a report page at the end of their stay.
