Le séminaire ERC MAP « Noms de dieux ! 5 : Qui nomme les dieux ? Énonciateurs, destinateurs, agents rituels » poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin. Cette année, il interroge plus particulièrement les agents humains dans les processus de dénomination du divin, qu’ils soient producteurs d’un discours sur les divinités, destinateurs dans une communication avec les divinités, voire experts en charge d’un savoir rituel. Quelle agentivité exercent hommes et femmes dans la production d’une dénomination spécifique du divin ? Comment interroger leurs choix, leur ancrage dans une tradition ou leurs stratégies d’innovation ?

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency ; 741182) travaille sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin dans les mondes grec et sémitique de l’ouest, de 1000 av. à 400 ap. n.è., et les envisage comme des témoignages de la manière dont les puissances divines sont construites, agencées et mobilisées, en particulier dans le cadre rituel. L’analyse porte à la fois sur les aspects structurels des systèmes religieux et sur leur appropriation contextuelle par des agents sociaux. Considérées comme les éléments d’un langage complexe, les séquences onomastiques se rapportant aux dieux donnent ainsi accès à une cartographie du divin, à ses modes de représentation et aux stratégies de communication entre hommes et dieux.

Le Séminaire prendra la forme d’ateliers mensuels, d’octobre 2020 à mai 2021. Deux invités y interviendront à chaque fois, un le matin, un l’après-midi, en disposant chacun d’un temps de parole d’une heure, suivi d’une heure d’échange.

ERC Advanced Grant MAP project

The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182) works on the systems of naming of the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds (ca. 1000 BCE – ca. 400 CE). Those systems of denomination are considered as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and mobilized, especially in ritual contexts. The analysis covers both the structural aspects of religious systems and their contextual appropriation by social agents. As elements of a complex language, onomastic sequences relating to the gods thus give access to a mapping of the divine, to its modes of representation and to the strategies of communication between men and gods.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. The Seminar will be carried out in the form of monthly study workshops, from November 2020 to May 2021. Two guests will intervene each time, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each one allocated a speaking time of one hour, followed by one hour of discussion.
