Cette session EUGEO 2021 souhaite mettre en avant tous les travaux envisageant le handicap et ses enjeux par une approche spatiale. Qu’il s’agisse, par exemple, de l’étude de la mobilité des personnes ayant des déficiences ou de l’analyse des liens objectifs et subjectifs qu’ils entretiennent avec l’espace, les travaux qui analysent les spatialités du handicap dans leur multiplicité et leur diversité seront particulièrement appréciés. Dans l’objectif de comprendre dans quelle mesure l’espace peut être un atout ou un frein pour les personnes en situation de handicap, cette session encourage également les travaux questionnant les différentes logiques d’insertion sociale et professionnelle et notamment l’influence du milieu de vie dans ces logiques.

The disability rights movement laid the foundation for the current development of disability studies.  A number of geography-based studies have been part of this stream of research since the 1990s. From different theoretical perspectives, they aim to study the links between disability and spatial injustice or to explore the sensitive dimension of the spatial relationships of people with disabilities. This EUGEO 2021 session wishes to highlight all the work that considers disability and its issues through a spatial approach. Whether the study of the mobility of people with disabilities or the analysis of their objective and subjective links with space, work that analyzes the spatialities of disability in their multiplicity and diversity will be particularly appreciated. With the aim of understanding to what extent space can be an asset or a hindrance for people with disabilities, this session also encourages work that questions the different logics of social and professional integration and in particular the influence of the living environment in these logics. 

Argument

The disability rights movement, which emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, laid the foundation for the current development of disability studies. The Society for Disability Studies' definition states that disability studies, among other things, “...examines the policies and practices of all societies in order to understand the social, rather than physical or psychological, determinants of the experience of disability. Disability studies have been developed to unravel the deficiencies of myths, ideology and stigma that influence social interaction and social policy”.

A number of geography-based studies have been part of this stream of research since the 1990s. From different theoretical perspectives, they aim to study the links between disability and spatial injustice or to explore the sensitive dimension of the spatial relationships of people with disabilities.

In the interval between the study of disability and geography, this EUGEO 2021 session wishes to highlight all the work that considers disability and its issues through a spatial approach.

Whether the study of the mobility of people with disabilities or the analysis of their objective and subjective links with space, work that analyzes the spatialities of disability in their multiplicity and diversity will be particularly appreciated.

What spatialities are produced by people with disabilities? How do they use and appropriate space? Is the relationship to place and mobility of people with disabilities different according to the type of disability, the person's living environment (rural, urban), their socio-professional category, etc.?

With the aim of understanding to what extent space can be an asset or a hindrance for people with disabilities, this session also encourages work that questions the different logics of social and professional integration and in particular the influence of the living environment in these logics.

Whether using examples of people living at home independently or of accompanied individuals in specialized institutions, what are the differences between living and working with a disability in a rural or urban environment? To what extent can space be a mitigating or accentuating factor in situations of disability?

The organizers of the EUGEO 2021 congress ask us to inform any participants of the planned organization.The congress has always been planned as a classic "in person" conference. However, many persons are now restricted in travelling and planning of future conference participations. Therefore, the organizers ask to indicate the preference as regards the possibility of online participation along with submitting your abstract. This is done directly in the abstract submission form by selecting one of the three options (see https://on-line-form.eu/eugeo2021/abstracts/).

Abstract submission is completely free of charge and separated from the congress registration. Unless you confirm your participation in the congress through the separate Online registration form, you will not be asked for any payment. Submitting your abstract, does not mean you are registered for the congress, so it does not bound you to anything. If you are hesitating whether or not to participate in the congress due to persisting travel restrictions, you can submit your abstract and indicate your preferences as regards online participations. This would certainly help the organizers in planning the congress.

Le mouvement des droits des personnes handicapées, qui a vu le jour dans les années 1970 et 1980, a jeté les bases du développement actuel des études sur le handicap. La définition de la Society for Disability Studies stipule que les études sur le handicap, entre autres choses : "... examine les politiques et les pratiques de toutes les sociétés afin de comprendre les déterminants sociaux, plutôt que physiques ou psychologiques, de l'expérience du handicap. Les études sur le handicap ont été développées pour démêler les déficiences des mythes, de l'idéologie et de la stigmatisation qui influencent l'interaction sociale et la politique sociale".

Plusieurs recherches en géographie se sont inscrites dans ce courant de recherche à partir des années 1990. Sous des angles théoriques différents, elles se proposent d’étudier notamment les liens entre situation de handicap et injustice spatiale ou d’explorer la dimension sensible des rapports à l’espace des personnes ayant des déficiences.

Dans l’intervalle entre études du handicap et géographie, cette session EUGEO 2021 souhaite mettre en avant tous les travaux envisageant le handicap et ses enjeux par une approche spatiale.

Quelles spatialités sont produites par les personnes en situations de handicap ? Comment utilisent-elles et s’approprient-elles l’espace ? Le rapport aux lieux et à la mobilité des personnes en situation de handicap est -il différent en fonction du type de déficience, du milieu de vie de la personne (rural, urbain), de sa catégorie socio-professionnelle etc. ?

Dans l’objectif de comprendre dans quelle mesure l’espace peut être un atout ou un frein pour les personnes en situation de handicap, cette session encourage également les travaux questionnant les différentes logiques d’insertion sociale et professionnelle et notamment l’influence du milieu de vie dans ces logiques.

Que ce soit à partir d’exemples de personnes vivant chez elles en autonomie ou d’individus accompagnés dans des établissements spécialisés, quelles sont les différences entre le fait de vivre et de travailler avec une déficience en milieu rural ou en milieu urbain ? Dans quelle mesure l’espace peut-il être un facteur atténuant ou accentuant les situations de handicap ?
