  All Souls College, Oxford

  All Souls College invites applications for up to four Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships, one in each of the following subjects: Literature in English; Mathematics; Modern Languages; Mathematics; and Social and Political Sciences (limited to Politics and International Relations, Social Anthropology, and Sociology). Those elected will be expected to take up their Fellowships on 1 October 2019 or such other date as may be agreed in advance with the College.  The Fellowship are for five years, fixed-term, and non-renewable.

  Comparing Militaries in the Long 19th Century

  The history of military development in modern times is one of mutual observation and comparison. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, political and military leaders continuously evaluated the power of their friends and foes. Members of the military, politicians and activists looked to foreign forces for models to avoid or emulate, using comparisons to justify their own military and defense policies. The workshop Comparing Militaries in the Long 19^th Century explores the means and methods by which experts and decision-makers observed and compared foreign armies and navies from the era of the Napoleonic Wars to the inter-war period.

  Women of the Americas

  The recognition of women’s place in American societies has become a crucial social, cultural, political and economic issue, as evidenced by worldwide protest movements such as Ni Una Menos that started in Argentina – a feminist movement fighting against feminicides and gender-based violence – or the Women’s March against President Donald Trump in the United States. Whether these protests have to do with the struggle for women’s right to vote, the sexual revolution that started in the 1960s, or social movements denouncing gender-based violence in urban and rural environments, they highlight a continuity between yesterday’s feminist fights and their re-adaptation in the public space.

  En 1945, la littérature d’enfance et de jeunesse scandinaves enregistrent une nouveauté gargantuesque avec la publication de Pippi Långstrump d’Astrid Lindgren et Les Moumines de Tove Jansson. Les expérimentalismes d’après-guerre trouvent dans la littérature scandinave de jeunesse une réalisation tellement accomplie que les experts parlent d’une deuxième percée moderne, à la suite du mouvement d’ouverture européenne enregistré par la littérature nordique dans les années 1870. L’influence sur le reste de la littérature européenne est assez immédiate et durable, l’image et la place au sein de la société que les pays scandinaves garantissent à l’enfant renouvelle les formes narratives de ce genre.

  Local elections, decentralisation and governance in North Africa: what changes after "the Arab revolts"?

  Nous souhaitons interroger les élections locales comme une composante du processus de décentralisation en Afrique du Nord. En effet, l’ensemble des États du Maghreb affiche dans leurs constitutions une volonté de transférer des compétences spécifiques cohérentes par rapport aux échelles de décision, et d’alléger le principe de tutelle de l'État central par la création d'une logique de partenariat mais aussi par l'organisation d'élections concurrentielles au suffrage universel d'assemblées représentatives afin de doter ce processus d’une relative légitimité. Cependant, les mises en œuvre institutionnelles de ces collectivités territoriales sont très différentes. Dans certains pays (Algérie et Égypte), les collectivités locales restent encore dépendantes du gouvernement central et l’administration. Au Maroc, la loi de 2015 a permis une plus forte autonomie politique des élus mais l’écrasante majorité des collectivités territoriales restent dépendantes financièrement de l’État central. En Tunisie, les élections de 2018 ont été organisées avant la publication des décrets d’application du nouveau code des collectivités territoriales.

  Photography, with or without capitalism

  Since its invention, photography has had a strong relationship with the development of capitalism : not only was its expansion, in the 1870s, dependent on the development of industry, but it was also the prerogative of the bourgeoisie which used it for its symbolic recognition. This relationship of contemporaneity, which spans the history of photography, and in part dictates its fluctuations, is almost an ethos of photography. This matter can be observed without interruption up until today, whereas the topic of fluxes is regularly applied to both the circulation of money and of images. Indeed, from the outset, photography has been an image which the liberal logic can be applied to. That is why, one can ask oneself if the aesthetic developments of photography can be regulated, in one way or another, by its economic ramifications. Both by colluding and/or by resisting, it appears that many formal tendencies result from (or answer to) its familiarity with capitalist logic.

  French strategies in the South Pacific and the challenge of climatic change

  Les changements climatiques constituent un risque majeur pour la plupart des États et territoires insulaires du Pacifique sud : l’élévation du niveau des océans, l’érosion côtière, les infiltrations d’eau salée, les sécheresses inhabituelles et les phénomènes météorologiquesextrêmes (inondations, raz-de-marée, cyclones) menacent en effet l’habitabilité de plusieursarchipels de la zone. Les territoires français du Pacifique Sud (TFP) ne sont pas épargnés par ces phénomènes : Wallis, Futuna, ainsi que plusieurs îles de Nouvelle-Calédonie et de Polynésie française sont particulièrement vulnérables aux bouleversements environnementaux, et en particulier au risque de submersion.

  Le 2 mars 2018, les étudiants de l'université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3, en master recherche en littératures française et comparée, ont organisé une journée d'étude sur le thème du « Rêve », accompagnée d'une représentation de la pièce Phèdre et autres Grecques par les étudiants en licence de théâtre. Les contributions abordent le rêve dans ses dimensions poétiques, politiques et anthropologiques à travers l'étude de textes de Littératures française et étrangère, avec notamment des perspectives comparatistes, du Moyen Âge au XX^e siècle.

  Corpus with specific objectives

  Depuis le milieu du XX^e siècle et la parution des premières grammaires de l'anglais fondées sur les usages telles que l'American English Grammar de Fries (1940), les corpus sont devenus des objets fondamentaux pour la connaissance des langues et de leurs variétés (Biber 1988, Sinclair 2004) ainsi que pour leur enseignement (Kübler 2011, Boulton 2016). Même si pour certains, les corpus « ne changent pas fondamentalement la position du chercheur en linguistique » (Cori & David 2008), il n'en demeure pas moins que les corpus sont aujourd'hui considérés comme une branche légitime de la linguistique au point que la linguistique de corpus fait pleinement partie du paysage scientifique français et international.

  Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Lamine Guèye

  Maître Lamine Guèye s’est éteint, à Dakar, le 10 juin 1968, à l’âge de 76 ans. Ce jour-là, le Sénégal perd le premier président de son Assemblée nationale. Cinquante années après, L’Association pour la pérennisation de la pensée et de l'œuvre du Président Lamine Gueye, dans sa volonté d’honorer la mémoire de l’illustre disparu, de mettre en lumière ses multiples facettes et de valoriser son héritage, a pris l’initiative d’organiser un certain nombre de manifestations dont un colloque et une exposition à Dakar, les 13 et 14 novembre 2018, sous le thème : « Maître Lamine Guèye, Itinéraire panafricain (1891-1968) ».

  Focus 2018: Transnational and Regional Dynamics

  Europe’s neighbourhood has experienced armed conflict, political transition and authoritarian restoration along with profound social and economic change. These transformation processes with deep historical roots have usually resulted from an interplay of domestic and transnational actors and factors. In order to reveal their complexity, a view through a transnational and regional lens can be rewarding: Which interdependences – past and present – are constitutive for the neighbouring regions of the European Union? How can we study transnational influences and effects on change in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East and North Africa region? How to distinguish and take into account factors of change across national borders and social boundaries? To which extent do these factors shape political, social and economic realities in these regions?

  The aims of this European seminar are: To explore biographical trajectories of theorists, initiators, and activists of various forms of adult education, and to analyze what led them to become "pioneers" in adult education; To identify new figures, more particularly women pioneers, who, up to now, have not been recognized to the same extent as men; To provide the basis for a European biographical dictionary, listing or documenting not only biographical notes, but also reflecting on different issues by the papers.

  Contaminations, the environment, health and society: from risk assessment to public action

  The quality of the environment is currently acknowledged as being a determining factor not only on health but also the social welfare of populations. Attention is regularly drawn to the harmful effects of environmental contamination on health and sustainable development at all levels, from local up to global. The uncertain consequences of their accumulation (cocktail effect) during unwanted exposure are potentially conflicting and damaging to health, thus making them a subject of concern. Studying environmental risks therefore requires an interdisciplinary approach, bringing into question scientific assessment methods and knowledge transfer to facilitate operations.

  Appropriating, exhibiting, and reconstituting objects and human remains from colonial conquests (late 19th century-present day)

  Most major ethnographic museums in Europe hold objects that can be traced back to the wars of conquest and “pacification” of the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries, during what was one of the most violent phases of European colonial expansion. The appropriation of ethnographic artifacts and human remains for the purpose of collection or desecration was a feature of colonial expansion. It has become the focus of a growing field of research. Collecting and accumulating objects took various shapes. Some were looted as war trophies in the violence of combat; others were negotiated in complicated and often uneven hierarchical fashion. This one-day conference will underline the diversity of these processes.
