  Social finance, impact investing, and the financialization of the public interest

  Social finance covers a wide range of practices aiming at providing private capital to social organizations, businesses and funds. The development of these practices is justified by promising ways to finance development and social policies in a period of austerity that sees limits to and reductions in public spending. Social finance is a heterogeneous field in the process of formation.

  At a time when a growing literature documents a rising involvement of private actors such as business associations, professional associations, multinational corporations or law firms in the creation of public policy, it seems crucial to study the practices of this involvement, as well as to study the meaning of such developments for the very distinction that social sciences have been making between the private and the public spheres, the private and the public actors. In other words, how do the concrete modalities of this involvement reshape the definition of roles and statuses of private and public actors in politics and policy?

  L'automédication en question

  Un bricolage socialement et territorialement situé

  Se soigner par soi-même est une pratique controversée : vilipendée au nom des risques sanitaires ainsi courus, cette pratique peut aussi être exaltée au nom de l’autonomie ainsi déployée. Les messages des pouvoirs publics sont au cœur de la controverse, insistant selon les périodes tantôt sur les risques, et tantôt sur la responsabilité des patients qui pourrait ainsi s’exercer. De telles injonctions contradictoires affectent également les pratiques des professionnels du soin. Le choix du colloque est de permettre des comparaisons et des confrontations entre ces différentes approches disciplinaires mais aussi ces terrains de recherche distincts (Nord / Sud, Nord / Nord et Sud / Sud). Il nous faut analyser et cartographier plus finement ces pratiques et leurs déterminants pour mettre en perspective ces analyses par définition toujours partielles, situées théoriquement, historiquement et géographiquement.

It matters as much for economic theory as for empirical investigations that are based upon such models. It matters in the way institutions emerge, as to how societies get organized, and for the many devices contributing to the “general good” (whether they appear spontaneously, or are pragmatically and purposely created). It matters also for correcting incomplete or missing markets.

  Ovidius University (Constanta, Romania), a modern and vibrant research university on the Black Sea coast, welcomes dialogue-oriented researchers and practitioners to be held on 25-26 September 2015 to the 3rd ESTIDIA Conference. The conference serves as a discussion forum for reserchers to showcase their dialogue-oriented work on current societal and community-related issues, and on methodological approaches to dialogue analysis. The aim is to bring together senior and junior schoolers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and professional orientation to critically explore, through dialogue, different perspectives on human thinking, communication strategies, interpersonal relations, socio-cultural traditions, political processes and business interactions by means of theory-based and practice-driven investigations.

  Consumers and producers’ perspectives

  The Research Symposium welcomes, once a year, international researchers and professionals to present their work and discuss issues related to food and hospitality. Each year, a specific topic is addressed from the point of view of multiple scientific fields such as health sciences, nutrition, psychology, cognition, sociology, economics, etc., offering an enriching overview on different topics. The eight edition of the International Research Symposium aims to share up-to-date research on managing hunger and satiety both from the consumers and from the producer’s perspectives. More, this day will be devoted to address appetite and food intake mechanisms in relation to pleasure and health in a product context or a food service context.

  The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Azerbaijan Customs are pleased to announce the 10th annual WCO PICARD conference. The conference will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 8 to 10 September 2015. Papers should focus on Customs or, more globally, the regulation, dynamics, and practices of the international trade of goods. The WCO encourages attendance and paper submissions from anthropologists, economists, geographers, historians, lawyers, and political scientists. The WCO is particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches regarding contemporary systems of regulation and control at borders.

  Income Contingent Loans

  As a part of national financial arrangements for higher education, income contingent student loans have been implemented in many countries (including Australia, Sweden, South Africa, England and Thailand, among others). These schemes are generally collected through income taxation systems and are repaid only when current income exceeds a specified level. This workshop aims at gathering internationally recognized experts on this issue, as well as French practitioners within higher education and within public policy, During the sessions, the results of high-quality applied research will be presented. The policy implications of these results will be discussed in a round table.

  Accounting Professions in the Arab Region

  Beyond Standardization: Professionel Dybnamics and Challenges

  Arab countries are confronted, like other countries, to the pressure of standardization, but each one of them is responding from the back ground of its particular history. In such a framework, accounting professions have developed, are regulated, have built professional organizations and training institutions, and are now pressed to adopt international standards. International audit firms tend to impose their methods and model with the expansion of transnational corporation, the multiplication of joint ventures and franchised colmpanies. Beyond cultural gaps, historical evolution and political-economic features, reforms are being designed universally, under the pressure of the World Bank. A better understanding of the accounting profession, of practitioners aims and stakes, can point a way forward. The aim of this project is to discuss these issues in the Arab countries, and to contribute by so doing to a new vision of what is at stake in the recent upheavals they have witnessed.

  Denationalization and territory

  Ph.d. workshop with Saskia Sassen

  Professor Saskia Sassen will take part in a half-a-day international doctoral workshop, which will be the concluding act of a two-day long seminar on denationalisation and territory (7-8 May 2014). Such doctoral seminar aims at providing Ph.D students who work on issues related to globalisation a dynamic and informal space to present their work, receive inputs from discussants and participants and have a chance to discuss with one of the major sociologists in the field. The participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their research questions, to receive informed opinions and to meet other academics working on similar issues in different regional context.

  The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1^st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

  Higher Education and Mobilities 2013

  In a context of major change in both higher education and the academic world, transformations can be considered as multi-dimensional and include issues such as : high enrolment rates, increased social and cultural heterogeneity, development of and change in mobility (institutional, territorial, international), diversification of the offer of academic institutions (public and private, reconfiguration of the institutional landscape), changes in policy guidelines, such as the Bologna Process. The conference will focus on individual and group behaviours, strategies and trajectories which are strongly affected by and find themselves remodelled in the current context. We propose the term mobility as a central notion for apprehending the phenomena.
