Major works such as The Moral Economy of the Peasant: Rebellion and Subsistence in Southeast Asia, Weapons of the Weak: Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance or Domination and the Arts of Resistance: Hidden Transcripts developed concepts, methodologies and theories that deeply influenced those who study social movements, agrarian societies or resistance struggles.

  Governing mobilities

  Cosmobilities conference 2012

  The Lausanne Cosmobilities Conference focuses on the question of which systems of governance are involved in these processes and how they are evolving as a result of these trends at a time when the future looks less and less like the past. In contrast to mainstream scientific literature and studies on transport and mobility dominated by works on travel and commuting, in this conference we propose to examine the governance of individual and collective actors’ mobility projects. In modern societies, where discourses lauding spatial and social mobility seem prevalent, this conference aims to understand critically how public policies consider the coexistence of different types of mobility projects, and inequalities linked to this diversity.

  In 2012 the NIOD will conclude the research program Legacies of collaboration: the integration and exclusion of National-Socialist milieus in Dutch society on the consequences of Nazi collaboration in the Netherlands. The research team looks forward to discussing its new approaches and results with colleagues from various fields and disciplines in a two day international seminar. We do not solely focus on the history of Nazi-collaboration, but aim to place our methods and results in a broader perspective.

  Stratégies des empires ibériques (1800-1936)

  Notre intention dans cet atelier est d’analyser les stratégies que les empires ibériques déployèrent au cours du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle pour gouverner les colonies tout en les faisant varier en les adaptant. En pleine époque de l’impérialisme et passé la première guerre d’indépendance coloniale, la métropole espagnole adopta une série de mesures libérales à Cuba et Porto Rico. Peu avant, la création d’un Ministère d’outre-mer en tant qu’organe autonome d’administration mit en évidence l’intérêt renouvelé pour la gestion des territoires coloniaux. La création de partis politiques et l’incorporation des Antilles au système parlementaire métropolitain constituent des changements fondametaux sur lesquels nous devrons nous pencher.

  One of the most significant aspects of recent historiographical work on war has been the attention paid to the cultural representations of conflict: the visual representation of war and its memory, language and rhetoric. This historiographical approach towards the subject of war has brought new attention to ways of representing war and the languages used to recount it. The First World War is usually seen as marking a new era; the unusual nature of the violence of this conflict, with the “disappearance of battle” and the mechanization of death, signalling the end of war as a place for generating men’s honour. But other moments in the history of western culture have seen the paradigm of war change in the accounts and narratives of contemporaries. Among these, the period of the Italian Wars of the sixteenth century, when the image of war transformed from a theatre of conflict between chivalric heroes to the anonymous encounters of armies.

  Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ?

  International Peacekeeping in Africa: Actors and Missions

  The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich in Switzerland will hold a conference the 23-24 November 2012 on International Peacekeeping in Africa, with a particular focus on current actors and missions. Over the last decades, the African continent has witnessed a proliferation of peacekeeping missions. Simultaneously, an increasing number of actors have become involved in the effort to bring peace to Africa, and this in turn has led to new and diverse types of operations. This conference seeks to analyze these developments in their entirety and comparatively in order to identify the most significant challenges and trends in international peacekeeping in Africa.
