Comment ces artistes sont-elles désignées, et de quelle manière préfèrent-elles se nommer ? Le siècle hésite à se saisir d’expressions pour les qualifier. Quelles sont les conditions de travail et de vie de ces artistes ? De quelles façons apprennent-elles leur art, où peuvent-elles l’exercer et l’exposer, avec qui à leurs côtés ? Quelle est la réception de leur art dans les Salons et les journaux de l’époque, en France et en Europe ? En quelle réputation – nationale et internationale, bonne ou mauvaise – sont-elles ?

The New Metaphysics: Analytic/Continental Crossovers

Topical Issue of "Open Philosophy" Review

The aim of this issue is to explicate and further develop recent work bridging traditional divisions between analytic and continental philosophy. Since the waning days of logical positivism, analytic philosophers have tended to understand philosophy as having a “core” of metaphysics construed broadly enough to include work in epistemology, logic, and the philosophy of mind. Continental philosophers, on the other hand, have traditionally viewed either phenomenology or value theory as most central to the philosophical enterprise. Despite pursuing common problems and sharing much common heritage, analytic and continental philosophy have remained methodologically and sociologically divided.

(Re) thinking translations

Methodologies, objectives, perspectives

In the last four decades, scholars have begun to go beyond the traditional perspective of linguistic and literary studies, and to consider the translations as cultural practices and the result of various processes of cultural and intellectual “negotiation” between two different contexts. In recent years also historians have progressively started to take a close interest in translations as sources to investigate the ways in which knowledge and ideas were constructed, disseminated, re-elaborated and assimilated in new cultural, social and political contexts. The aims of this international conference is to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue on these problems, bringing together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers from Translation Studies, History, History of Book, History of Science, Literary Studies and related disciplines who are interested in discussing methodologies, objectives and perspectives in the study of translations.

Open Cultural Studies, an OA peer-reviewed Journal (De Gruyter) invites submissions to a special issue on Capitalist Aesthetics edited by Dr Pansy Duncan & Dr Nicholas Holm (Massey University The issue will explore the aesthetic configurations—from the cute to the comfortable, from the no-brow to the fringe—through which the economic logics of late capitalism come to crystallize today. It invites work that treats the stylistic and formal dimension of cultural objects, and the verdictive and affective dimensions of cultural discourse/experience, as valuable “cryptograms” of contemporary ideological formations and the economic relations they sustain.

Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades (CIDEHUS) has a collection of books with peer review: Biblioteca: Estudos e Colóquios – intended to the publication of monographic works. This collection has an international scientific committee and an editorial committee, in addition to an adviser. Every year, this collection makes an open call to the academic community in general and not only to the members of CIDEHUS for publication purposes. This is the 2018 call. The works, however, will almost assuredly only be published in 2019.

What remains of postmodernity?

Since the 70s, the word postmodernity has articulated a tendency, a state of mind, and a condition that resists conceptualization or complete definition. Although the intellectual community has agreed to situate J. F. Lyotard and his key work, The Postmodern condition (1979), as the origin of the debate on this phenomenon, the truth is that the literary theorist Ihab Hassan had already used the word systematically in 1971. Since that date, the notion has spread across the fields of Literature, Architecture, Visual Arts, and the Social Sciences. These are two of the problems that one faces when approaching the surface of the postmodern phenomenon: its lack of definition and its ambiguous periodization.

Women’s spring: feminism, nationalism and civil disobedience

The aim of this conference is to explore the ways in which female activists and artists responded the resurgence of the far-right nationalism and the twin evil of religious fundamentalism. We want to take a closer look at grassroots emancipatory movements, women-led voluntary associations, as well as cultural texts by women – performances, installations, artworks, films and novels – in which authors take a stance against religious bigotry, xenophobia, homophobia, racism and misogyny. But we also invite contributions that focus on women’s endorsement of and participation in ultra-conservative national and orthodox religious campaigns.

Five Centuries of Cultural Influence

Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire. The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

Para seu numero 11, RITA se propõe de interrogar na sua seção Thema os vínculos entre poder e mídias nas Américas. Diferentes orientações podem ser evocadas, sem ser exclusivas. Artigos que tratarão da analise critica das mídias oficiais ou artigos sobre as mídias de oposição, em contextos históricos e geográficos variados, estão benvindos. Outras contribuições poderiam se interessar pelos efeitos das diferentes formas de tratamento mediático reservadas aos movimentos populares. Análises criticas sobre as relações entre mídias e poderes econômicos são também esperadas. O dossiê temático poderá também integrar reflexões sobre a recente diversificação das mídias de informação, tratando por exemplo do aparecimento de mídias “alternativas” na Internet ou do poder das fake news na construção das representações coletivas.

This one-day symposium – opening with a keynote lecture by Anthony Grafton (Princeton) – aims to explore the notions of typos and manuscript or stop-press emendations in early modern print shops. Building on Grafton’s seminal work, scholars are invited to present new evidence on what we can learn from misprints in relation to publishers’ practices, printing and pre-publication procedures, and editorial strategies between 1450 and 1600.

By all measures, Germany played an overwhelming role in the development of philology and linguistics during the 19th century. This ascendancy rests on the transmission to other national academies of theoretical constructs and views, methods and institutional practices. On the other hand, German philological and linguistic ideas, methods and institutions were not constituted in isolation from the rest of the world : Transfers to the German-speaking world must also be taken into account.
