  Exploration, Navigation and Retrieval of Information in Cultural Heritage

  ENRICH 2013 Workshop

  A key challenge facing the curators and providers of digital cultural heritage worldwide is to instigate, increase and enhance engagement with their collections. To achieve this, a fundamental change in the way these artefacts can be discovered, explored and contributed to by users and communities is required. Cultural heritage artefacts are digital representations of primary resources: manuscript collections, paintings, books, photographs etc. The text-based resources are often innately "noisy", contain non-standard spelling, poor punctuation and obsolete grammar and word forms. The image-based resources often have limited associated metadata which describes the resources and their content. In addition, the information needs and tasks of cultural heritage users are often complex and diverse. This presents a specific set of challenges to traditional Information Retrieval (IR) techniques and approaches. This workshop will investigate the enhanced retrieval of, and interaction with, cultural heritage collections.

  The Conference will investigate how the 1980-1995 period, often considered a sort of lost time in Euro-Mediterranean relations, prepared this move. In particular, it will focus on major political, socio-economic and human-cultural trends in the Mediterranean region, the main aim being to properly contextualize the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, to overcome the separation between political-strategic, economic and human-cultural dimensions of regional dynamics and to evaluate the impact that migration flows and policies made on the complex of bilateral and multilateral relations in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

  Crisis, Ideas and Policy Transformation

  Experts and Expertise in European International Organizations, 1973-1987

  Crisis and crisis experience were central to Western European history between the first oil crisis of 1973 and the coming into force of the Single European Act in 1987. European international organizations (IOs) such as the OECD or the EC played a crucial role in debating and addressing manifold dimensions of crisis, shifting discourses and transforming policies at national and European level. These IOs drew heavily on experts and their expertise in managing crisis and seeking solutions for structural problems. Organized jointly by the University of Portsmouth and Maastricht University, the workshop will investigate the diversity of experts and expertise cultures and analyze in comparative perspective different European sectors and policy fields. We invite paper proposals addressing the role of experts in European IOs, or advising them, in debating and managing crisis, diffusing ideas and transforming policies in the 1970s and 1980s.

  Changing the Tune: Popular Music and Politics in the XXIst century

  From the fall of communism to the Arab spring

  Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20^th and early 21^st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

Its aim is to present current knowledge of not only the medieval products, techniques, workshops and labour force, but also of the market and trade in these products. This symposium will present the research carried out in history and archaeology of materials and processes with, in some cases, the support of scientific studies.

  Culture in War

  Identity ideologies, nationalisms, conflicts: Europe 1870-1922

  The fifty years that go from the Franco-Prussian War to the end of the Great War and the advent of fascism in Italy (early and precursor totalitarian swing in post-war Europe) marks a new phase in representing the ideology of the ‘nation’ and the ‘nature of peoples’. The cultural processes which, between 18^th and 19^th centuries, had been used as consistent ideological repertoire for the political foundation of modern European nations, supported from the second half of the 19^th century, the rapid nationalistic involution of national politics, functional to colonial expansionism and to the ruling continental objectives, but also to withstand and repress internal social conflicts. A cultural and political transition from romantic patriotism to imperialistic nationalism (that which Muarizio Virali has concisely defined “nationalization of patriotism”), for which those that had generally been considered simple differences of character, customs, and social habits between the peoples of nations are transformed into irreconcilable contrasts: the national state is the emanation of a homogeneous people, of a race, and the unshakeable otherness of the foreigner reflects and consolidates this belief. Making use of the instruments provided by disciplines such as socio-psychology, social anthropology, biology, social Darwinism, and with the approximate simplifications of those like Gobineau, Chamberlain, Nordau, Langbehn etc., it is believed that the character of peoples may be defined and thus mark national identities within an all absorbing viewpoint.
