  L'Europe centrale au seuil de la modernité. Mutations sociales, religieuses et culturelles

  Autriche, Bohème, Hongrie et Pologne, fin du XIVe siècle – milieu du XVIe siècle

  Ce colloque réunissant des chercheurs français et surtout étrangers s'efforce d'éclairer le moment décisif dans l'histoire de l'Europe centrale et orientale que constitue la fin du Moyen Âge et le début de l'époque moderne. Alors qu' elle semblait sur le point de « rattraper » ses modèles, elle se singularisa par des choix qui contribuèrent à la maintenir en marge de l'Europe pendant des siècles. Ce colloque s'intéresse exclusivement aux aspects sociaux, religieux et culturels. Les faits politiques et diplomatiques pourront faire l'objet d'un second colloque s'inscrivant dans le même cadre chronologique et géographique.

  European Social Science History Conference 2010

  This is a call for papers for the Network Religion of the next European Social Science History Conference, which will take place at the beautiful Bijloke Site in Ghent, Belgium, from 13 to 16 April 2010. The aim of the ESSHC is bringing together scholars interested in explaining historical phenomena using the methods of the social sciences. The conference is characterized by a lively exchange in many small groups, rather than by formal plenary sessions. The conference welcomes papers and sessions on any historical topic and any historical period. It is organized in 28 networks, which cover a certain topic, on of these being Religion.

  Dans ce numéro thématique de la revue Ethnologies, nous proposons de réfléchir au jeu identitaire et à l’identité jouée dans les jeux et dans les sports. Nous cherchons ainsi à mieux comprendre comment le joueur peut s’exprimer et s’affirmer dans une pratique ludique et/ou sportive et quelle est la cohérence de cette pratique pour le social. In this special issue of Ethnologies, we invite thoughts on identity games and on performed identity in games and sports. We seek a better understanding of how a player can express and assert himself/herself in leisure or sporting practices, and of the social coherence of these practices.

  Appel à contributions pour Géocarrefour, vol. 84 (hiver 2009)

  L’approche de type géohistorique irrigue les courants les plus divers de la géographie, son originalité tenant au fait qu’elle cherche à replacer la dynamique et la structuration des milieux ou des territoires dans le temps long. Plus qu'une histoire spatialisée elle vise donc une compréhension des phénomènes spatiaux et du sens de leurs enchaînements au cours du temps. Elle peut prétendre de ce fait à un certain renouvellement du genre monographique qui devient l’exercice préalable à l’identification de trajectoires d’évolution ou de recompositions.Ce numéro de Géocarrefour, espéré pour la fin de l'année 2009, abordera plusieurs pistes dans ce sens.

  En 2009, la journée d’étude internationale des doctorants du CHCSC de l'Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines est consacrée aux représentations médiatiques de l'homme politique (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle). Spots de campagne, allocutions présidentielles, biographies, affiches électorales... Les hommes politiques sont source d'un imaginaire qui fascine les médias et leur public. Cette journée d'étude invite à s'interroger sur la perception commune de l'homme de pouvoir, ses mécanismes et sa charge symbolique, sur les modalités de vulgarisation de la chose publique par les médias de masse, ainsi que la force et la pérennité des représentations comme terreau des identités nationales. Elle s'inscrit dans l'histoire culturelle internationale du politique et propose une réflexion sur le discours et l'image (fixe et animée) du pouvoir. Propositions avant le 31 decembre 2008.

  Daily Life in Ottoman Towns

  What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.

  Whose Opportunities? A Critique of Equality

  The meeting is of a scientific nature, envisaging dialogue among some of the most influential and original theorists of social policies of today. The common goal is to attempt to define the state of the art in the crucial discussion of Left-wing social policies in the 21st century, namely social equality, thus contributing to producing a well-balanced presentation of egalitarian political thought oriented for the future, as well as a well-defined ethics of responsibility necessary for the accomplishment of the social goals of the Left. The more specific goal is to contribute to clarifying the relation between equality of opportunity and meritocracy, in order to come to terms with the series of displacements that the notion and practice of «equal opportunities» has suffered since it came into the political debate in the post-French Revolution world.

  Case studies on particular medieval manuscript miscellanies written in any language are welcome at the workshop concentrating especially on three aspects: Composition: How do the contents fit together in specific cases? Is there a plan or a reason behind? If so, what does the selection tells about the compiler’s interests? Authorship: To what degree are the miscellany compilers and gatherers authors? Is there a personal touch discernable and interpretable? Use: How were these manuscripts actually used?   Citizenship and Ethnicity

  Development studies are increasingly focused on democratization and the relationship between state power and issues of identity. Local communities and identity groups – ethnic, national, indigenous, religious - continuously struggle to negotiate their relations with the state and with each other in ways that may challenge conventional or legal definitions of citizenship. Collective identities may certainly exacerbate struggles between groups, but they may also create linkages, thus becoming both embedded in and inseparable from the democratization process. Increasingly, the quality of democracy is linked to inclusive citizenship regimes. These involve individual rights, but also a collectively defined “common good.” In divided societies both elements are problematic.
