  The discordance of the times: Daniel Bensaïd and contemporary social criticism

  Século XXI: Revista de Ciências Sociais

  In January of 2020 will be completed ten years of the death of Daniel Bensaïd, one of the most important contemporary philosophers. Author of a work marked by original contributions to the broad tradition of historical materialism, it can be said that his thought contemplates the current needs of social criticism, both in academia and outside it. Bensaïd was concerned about defending an approach to contemporary society that took into account the need to avoid the theoretical and practical risks of dogmatic thought, as well as that reasoning attached to the positivist canons of a scientistic "objectivity". This epistemological "alert" is strategically present in the theoretical elaborations of the philosopher, informing his looks regarding time, space, the question of social classes and the dynamism and fluidity of social and political relations.

C'est un congrès multidisciplinaire qui se propose de questionner, sous diverses approches, l’Afrique et sa diaspora en tant qu’entité dominée, communauté d’appartenance et de destin, ou encore, communauté imaginée qui utilise la culture et les imaginaires populaires comme une mémoire de résistance et de dissidence.

  Haïti: An Earthquake for Gender

  Revue internationale des études du développement - 2019/3

  This special issue aims at bringing to light scientific knowledge which counterbalances thestereotyping of Haitian and Caribbean women’s rights. For centuries, Haitian women have beendeeply marked by the geostrategic interests of various world powers, and they are still the object of narratives whose androcentrism is explicit. This sp ecial issue will provide an opportunity to debate Haitian women’s varied experiencesthrough new epistemic and political postures, questioning western perceptions of Haiti. Thus, it will contribute to developing research largely based on practices, experiences, ideas, and theories produced in the Caribbean with an awareness for the logics of coloniality. The aim will be to bring to light an emerging literature in Haiti and, more broadly, in the French-speaking Caribbean. It will also place recent changes in the context of structural historicity, what tookplace since 2010 also being explained by structural mutations which began prior to the earthquake.

  This issue of the journal TRANS- will be devoted not to the bridge, but to bridges, be they real or imaginary, painted, sculpted, filmed, recounted or deconstructed. This subject is not exclusive to any time period or genre. It does however require a comparative approach that can take the form of a comparison between different objects – bridges coming from geographies, histories, literatures, or technologies – and can be understood as a meeting point of several approaches, and as the excursion of a scientific perspective in a work of fiction, or an historical approach to a concept.

  This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

  The recognition of women’s place in American societies has become a crucial social, cultural, political and economic issue, as evidenced by worldwide protest movements such as Ni Una Menos that started in Argentina – a feminist movement fighting against feminicides and gender-based violence – or the Women’s March against President Donald Trump in the United States. Whether these protests have to do with the struggle for women’s right to vote, the sexual revolution that started in the 1960s, or social movements denouncing gender-based violence in urban and rural environments, they highlight a continuity between yesterday’s feminist fights and their re-adaptation in the public space.

  Le livre sera consacré à l'impact de la première guerre mondiale dans les Antilles. La première guerre mondiale a donné lieu à un grand nombre de recherches universitaires. Elle représente une rupture fondamentale dans l’histoire du XXème siècle. Comme le signale George-Henri Soutou la Grande Guerre a été la « matrice du XXème siècle ». Même des territoires très éloignés des tranchées et des champs de bataille européens furent durablement ébranlés par les conséquences de ce conflit. L’Australie commémore toujours la bataille de Gallipoli, au Canada les batailles de Vimy ou de Passchendaele font partie de la mémoire collective, des historiens ont montré quels ont été les implications de cette guerre dans les colonies africaines et asiatiques. En revanche, la mémoire des pays latino-américains était jusqu’à récemment incomplète.

  Ce colloque international se donne pour objectif de s’intéresser spécifiquement à l’année 1968 et à ses effets, en embrassant largement l’aire caribéenne ainsi que nord, méso et sud-Américaine. Les organisateur-trice-s entendent favoriser les approches pluridisciplinaires et mettre en lien les aires géo-culturelles, de façon à insister sur les transversalités, les échanges, les transferts culturels et politiques ainsi que les parallélismes dont l’année 1968 est porteuse. Nous proposons de décliner l’année 1968 à l’aune de plusieurs prismes, lectures et présentations issus des champs d’investigations suivants : littérature, arts (arts visuels, cinéma, musique), archives et manuscrits, histoire, sciences politiques et sociologie. Le colloque est largement ouvert aux approches transdisciplinaires « informatisées » dans une perspective dite des « humanités numériques ».

  Le Centre de Recherche et de Documentation des Amériques (UMR 7227) de l’Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine de l’Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle Paris 3, organise un colloque international afin d’identifier, dans une perspective comparative, l’évolution des recherches en sciences sociales sur l’eau dans les Amériques, du Sud au Nord, de valoriser les perspectives théoriques et méthodologiques qui se développent pour appréhender l’eau et de comprendre les nouveaux éclairages qu’apportent les sciences sociales sur les débats actuels sur l’eau.   The production of knowledge - forms, legitimacy, issues and relations to the world

  Au delà de la connaissance que l’on peut avoir du monde, les chemins que l’on se donne pour parvenir à en constituer une sont fondamentaux : quelles catégories forger pour décrire le réel ? Dans un champ de savoir donné, qu’est-ce qui fait autorité (et donc est reconnu comme légitime) ? Qu’est-ce qui constitue un objet d’étude pertinent ? Qui est l’auteur de l’énonciation du discours savant ? Dans quel but ? Longtemps donnée pour objective, la connaissance est toujours, inévitablement, le produit d’une série de choix, qui sont autant de chemins empruntés au détriment d’autres. L’épistémologie explique le monde, mais contribue aussi forcément à le construire. Cette tendance apparaît de façon évidente avec l’émergence des principales minorités historiques – celles que l’histoire a minoré – qu’ont été les femmes, les minorités sexuelles ou les groupes colonisés et, à l’intérieur de ces derniers, les femmes des communautés colonisées.

  La religion en tant que réalité sociale s'est historiquement manifestée à travers des actes dans lesquels les personnes se réunissent périodiquement pour exprimer des croyances partagées. Pour ce symposium nous encourageons l'envoi de propositions basées sur des travaux de terrain et rendant compte de l'héritage de l'évangélisation dans le catholicisme latino-américain, afin de montrer les espaces publics et privés dans lesquels se célèbrent et se matérialisent de nouveaux langages communs - artistiques, symboliques, gestuels - qui font des pratiques religieuses l'expression d'une société dans un contexte particulier, à un moment précis de son histoire, non pas comme des manifestations de syncrétisme, mais plutôt comme des processus d'intégration sociale, à travers lesquels plusieurs cultures s'influencent mutuellement.

It especially welcomes contributions focusing on a comparative approach, native and/or minority cultures in the Americas, American urban cultures, and marginal and contested cultures and identities in the Americas.
