Thinking from the Dual – Ontology, Theology and the Humanities through the Lens of the “Muthannā”
This international conference explores the philosophical and theological implications of the Arabic grammatical dual (al-muthannā). Situated between the paradigms of unity and multiplicity that have long structured philosophical thought, the dual offers a distinctive relational structure in which two terms are held together without fusion or hierarchy. Taking this linguistic form as a conceptual starting point, the conference investigates the possibility of thinking relation itself as originary. Particular attention will be given to the concept of ʿahd (covenant, pact, commitment) as a relational event in Islamic theology and beyond. Bringing together philosophers, theologians, and scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the conference seeks to open a field of inquiry devoted to the ontological, theological, and anthropological significance of the dual in contemporary thought.

This workshop seeks to explore the links between preaching and socio-humanitarian action in the contemporary Middle East. Contexts of social and humanitarian crises appear as privileged sites for understanding this constitutive device of faith experiences, beyond the sole framework of the sermon or religious discourse. The chosen approach is deliberately cross-cutting: it brings Islam, Judaism, and Christianity into dialogue, while situating the Middle East within a global perspective. How does preaching accompany and shape social and humanitarian action? In what forms and according to which modalities does it unfold? How does it influence the understanding and implementation of aid?

Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East
Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

Religious Conversions. Believing and Doing on the Move in the Mediterranean Area
This issue looks at religion in terms of its ability to mobilise institutions, groups and individuals around plural dynamics that contribute to the redefinition of the religious field itself. It looks at religious conversion through the prism of multidirectional and communicating trajectories, ’bifurcations’ in which movements of diversions, decentering and return to the self come together. Religious conversion is understood here beyond the dualistic categorisation of rupture and continuity. This leads us to think of it not simply as an opaque process of religious disaffiliation and affiliation, but as a movement from self to self, involving a constant tension of negotiation between reconfiguration of the ways in which people believe and do religion, and the significance of the identities and sensibilities of individuals in a given social environment.

Pour explorer l’idée selon laquelle nommer c’est convoquer des bribes de « théologie » s’enracinant dans des traditions et des innovations propres à chaque environnement, la Syrie fournit un terrain d’une richesse exceptionnelle. Dans le cadre du projet MAP (ERC Advanced Grant 741182 « Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency »), on se propose de scruter les appellations partagées ou spécifiques, répandues ou singulières, des innombrables divinités attestées avec leurs attributs onomastiques et iconographiques dans les sanctuaires syriens : Nabu, Nergal, Shamash, Zeus, Athéna, Némésis, ou encore les moins connus Durahlun, Azzanathkona, ou Shalman.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Ce colloque international est consacré à l’étude des rumeurs et des renommées dans le « monde biblique », c’est-à-dire d’une part dans les textes bibliques et apparentés (Bible hébraïque, Bible grecque, Nouveau Testament, littératures intertestamentaire et apocryphe etc.), et relativement à leurs différents contextes sociohistoriques de production (Proche-Orient et Méditerranée), et d’autre part, dans le cadre des réceptions les plus immédiates de ces textes, principalement au sein des communautés juives et chrétiennes antiques.

The individual and his body in the Ancient Mediterranean basin
Le corps d’un individu relie celui-ci aux autres membres de sa communauté, il constitue un support physique commode pour interagir avec eux. Sans corps, pas de sens ; sans sens, pas de communication possible. Toutefois, le corps sépare aussi l’individu de ses contemporains : par ses particularismes innés ou acquis, il le différencie des autres. Il est donc à la fois un facteur de cohésion et de discrimination sociale. Cette problématique, très explorée en anthropologie sociale, a été presque complètement ignorée dans les études sur le Proche-Orient cunéiforme. En hittitologie, seule la lexicographie des parties du corps humain a été étudiée jusqu’à présent.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

From Arab springs to the questionning of States
Civil societies faced with the resurgeance of segmentary logics
Ce colloque vise à analyser les processus de remise en cause de l’autorité et/ou de la légitimité de l’État dans cinq pays arabes touchés par ce phénomène : Irak, Syrie, Liban, Libye, Yémen. Il s’agira de comparer les différents processus en cours en les rattachant à un temps plus long et d'identifier dans les racines historiques des processus de construction nationale arabes les causes possibles du délitement des institutions étatiques auquel nous assistons dans les pays considérés, face à la tenue, réelle ou apparente, d’autres pays de la région, où l’Etat s’appuie sur des identités plus anciennes, y compris coloniales, et/ou sur des appareils sécuritaires omniprésents. La démarche s’appuie sur une dimension internationale et interdisciplinaire et s'adresse à l'ensemble des sciences sociales (anthropologie, histoire, sciences politiques et sociologie notamment).

Food and religion in Egypt and in the Ancient Near East
Religion et alimentation interagissent à bien des points de vue (le jeûne, le sacrifice, etc.), principalement parce que la norme, notamment mise en forme à travers les rites, est au cœur de chacune ; dans cette optique, elles sont un moyen privilégié d’interroger les sociétés, et de les comparer. Aussi est prévue à l’Ifao la publication de l’ouvrage collectif Religion et alimentation dans l'Égypte et l'Orient anciens, qui aura pour objectif de déterminer la place qu’occupe la nourriture dans les mythes et les pratiques rituelles, et de définir la nature et l’importance de la marque religieuse dans les pratiques alimentaires. Fondé sur une démarche comparatiste, il rassemblera des études de cas et des travaux de synthèse, qui porteront aussi bien sur l’Égypte ancienne, depuis l’Ancien Empire jusqu’à l’époque byzantine, que sur la Mésopotamie ancienne, l’Anatolie hittite et le Levant ancien.

La fondation Calouste Gulbenkian soutient l'organisation d'un colloque international au patriarcat arménien de Jérusalem, les 3 et 4 juillet 2014, sur le thème : « La genèse de Jérusalem : espaces construits et communautés historiques ». Il s'agit de s'interroger sur la construction historique et sociale de la Jérusalem contemporaine en étudiant les relations entretenues par les différentes communautés de la ville avec l'espace qui les entoure, dans leurs multiples dimensions, aussi bien religieuses que séculières. Les organisateurs encouragent une approche pluridisciplinaire. Le colloque est ouvert à toutes les aires culturelles potentiellement concernées, et notamment aux spécialistes en études arméniennes. Il mettra l'accent sur les périodes moderne et contemporaine.

Au croisement de la philologie, de l'archéologie, de l'histoire des religions et de l'anthropologie sociale, il cherchera à définir certaines des modalités de la « fabrication » de l'humain. -

Ces frontières sont tout à la fois culturelles, entre hellénisme et judaïsme, linguistiques par la transposition de notions hébraïques dans la langue grecque, et enfin, religieuses par l’émergence d’une nouvelle fracture, la naissance du christianisme au sein du judaïsme. -

Although the topic may seem vast and complex, the multidisci-plinary approach allows for a better understanding of the topic and an informative exchange among scholars and interested people from all faiths. -
