Lapidariums. Precious sources for the history of a monument and its sculpted decoration

"In Situ" Journal n°53 – 2025

The French term ‘dépôt lapidaire’, a lapidary depot, rendered here as a lapidarium, is understood to mean collections of archaeological or architectural fragments and pieces of sculpture, assembled so as to maintain an organic link with the monument or the site they come from. The time seems to be ripe, then, as the topic as a whole takes on numerous forms, to draw up a general, if provisional analysis of the situation. It seems useful to think about how best to share information coming from different sectors (historic monuments, archaeology, museums and parks and gardens). New lines of action can perhaps be sketched out for a new phase for these very special cultural properties, located at the frontiers between the movable and immovable heritage.

Réflexions et propositions pour la décolonisation du système de musées en Afrique Orientale

Dans un contexte renouvelé de l’histoire, du patrimoine culturel, et des musées en Afrique, repenser les modèles de ces derniers se présente comme un enjeu majeur. Ainsi, Edouard Nzoyihera, docteur en histoire de l’art et archéologie, proposera une communication sur le thème « Réflexions et propositions pour la décolonisation du système de musées en Afrique orientale ». Un second temps de la conférence sera dédié à la présentation de son ouvrage « Les musées en Afrique orientale : contribution à leur décolonisation » par Manuelina Duarte Candido, spécialiste de la muséologie ibéro-américaine. Cet ouvrage s’intéresse à l’histoire des musées en Afrique et aux enjeux d’une nouvelle muséologie et de nouveaux types de musées, impliquant les communautés, que l'auteur propose d'appeler « éco-greniers culturels ».

The criticism about infringements of academic freedom, or about the radicalization of autocratic powers cannot do without an understanding of the loaded vocabularies of freedoms in the past and present, for both societies and their elites. A complex rethinking and recontextualization of the thinkers of liberties, including from the Cold War era, must also be undertaken, together with the truth-seeking adventures and projects from the past. Historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists and socially engaged artists are invited to reflect on the past uses of the languages of (attaining) freedoms by taking cues from the Blinken Open Society Archive's collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics listed below.

Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

Réseaux de correspondances dans les mondes ibériques et ibéro-américains (XVIII-XIX-XXe siècles)

Si l’écriture épistolaire n’est pas une invention du XVIII^e siècle, ce procédé de communication interpersonnelle et intellectuelle, utilisé aussi bien dans la vie réelle que dans la fiction, connaît un nouvel essor au siècle des Lumières. L’étude des correspondances suppose par ailleurs que l’on s’intéresse à la notion de réseaux, car l’échange et la circulation des lettres induit des dynamiques de constitution de réseaux interpersonnels (épistolaires au premier chef, mais qui sont aussi des réseaux familiaux, commerciaux, politiques, diplomatiques, etc). De plus, avec le développement des humanités numériques, on assiste à un renouvellement des méthodes d’analyse qui apportent une dimension novatrice à l’étude de corpus de correspondances. Il s’agira donc, lors de ce congrès, d’aborder la question des réseaux de correspondances dans une perspective élargie, en étendant l’étude aux espaces ibériques et ibéro-américains, et dans une chronologie allant du XVIII^e au XX^e siècles.

We invite submissions of 20-minute papers exploring the history of these international organisations and their role in fostering transnational networks, cultural exchanges, and theoretical and methodological debates between scholars. We are also interested in local structures and the impact of international meetings on the development of national historiographies. We especially encourage papers focused on the Eastern Bloc and the Global South.

Archéologie des carrières en Hauts-de-France et dans les régions limitrophes

Les enjeux urbanistiques des Trente Glorieuses ont contribué à la création de services d'inspections des carrières au sien des collectivités territoriales françaises. Afin de mieux comprendre leur territoire, les géologues se sont alors progressivement rapprochés des historiens et des archéologues. Les projets récents, tels que l’Atlas numérique sur l’archéologie des carrières, illustre l’ouverture des collaborations en mettant en lien des acteurs du monde scientifique avec ceux de l’industrie. Face à ce constat, le Service archéologique municipal d’Arras et le Centre archéologique de Seclin, qui étudient les carrières souterraines depuis plusieurs années, souhaitent proposer une journée d’études autour de la thématique des carrières. L’objectif est de rassembler les différents acteurs des Hauts-de-France, mais aussi ceux des régions limitrophes, dans un souci de comparaison, afin de faire le point sur l’état de la recherche.

A Byzantine Century

Reassessing Neo-Byzantine Style from Paris to Algiers to Tiflis – and Beyond (ca. 1800 – 1920)

In the wake of blossoming discussions on the reception history of the Middle Ages, this conference attempts to rethink the protean and eclectic term “Neo-Byzantine” from a broad perspective. We are particularly interested in the complex articulation between art historical theory, architectural and artistic practice, and the actual patronages and uses of the “Neo-Byzantine.” We invite scholars dealing with the issue from a broad chronological (1800–1920) and geographical frame, bridging Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. We especially welcome are case studies or broader reflections on the uses of “Neo-Byzantine” architecture in processes of identity and nation-building and within frameworks of orientalism and colonialism.

La deuxième journée d’étude PROC (2024) vise à analyser les méthodes par lesquelles sont traitées dans les éditions critiques papier et numérique l’identification et l’analyse des autorités implicites dans la production des « œuvres composites » des XVI^e-XVII^e siècles. Nous invitons à poser la question de la signature et de l’auctorialité voilées, éléments intrinsèques des problématiques qui surgissent dans la production littéraire humaniste. Ces aspects seront interrogés à l’aune des différentes pratiques qu’offre un travail d’éditorialisation. Il s’agira plus précisément d’examiner dans quelle mesure l’inaltérabilité du format papier et l’interopérabilité de l’outillage numérique entraînent, dans le cadre de l’édition critique, des approches, des démarches et des perspectives à la fois singulières et complémentaires.

The issue 13 of Transposition aims to provide an overview of the relationships between music and right-wing political movements in the contemporary world. If music is both an aesthetic and a social phenomenon that can contribute to our understanding of the world, is there a specifically musical way of thinking about and defining the political category of the right? How do land reforms affect land access and property rights? Who are the actors of these transformations? Does such evolution contribute to the commodification and financialization of land? How do urban regulations produce informalities and affect socio-spatial dynamics? This half-day thematic seminar seeks to delve into these key questions with two roundtables. Aiming to inform today’s urban transformations through law and history, the six presentations will cover different contexts as diverse as Istanbul, Northern Italy, rural China, Madrid, and colonial Bombay, spanning from the 14th century to today.
