L’association Amis de Rochambeau marquera le tricentenaire de la naissance de Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau (le 1er juillet 1725) en organisant un colloque international dans sa ville natale, Vendôme. De nombreux historiens, chercheurs et universitaires se retrouveront ainsi pour composer un large portrait de Rochambeau à travers leurs spécialités respectives et pour participer au renouvellement de l'histoire de la guerre.

Pour la dix-septième année, des archéologues, historiens, géologues et autres amoureux des cavités naturelles et artificielles se réuniront pour une série de communications concernant des sites rupestres de plusieurs continents. Pour la première fois, des chercheurs américains et polonais présenteront des études de cas aux Etats-Unis (villages rupestres d’Arizona et du Colorado). Nous irons également dans des forteresses, des carrières, des sites sardes, turcs et éthiopiens, à la recherche de structures et de traces diverses…Des études de cas en France seront également présentées.

« Les Cahiers de l’abbaye de Créteil », vol. 43
Les Cahiers de l’abbaye de Créteil lance un appel à contributions pour son prochain numéro thématique (Volume 43), à paraître en janvier 2025. Consacré à l’étude réactualisée de l’œuvre de Georges Duhamel intitulée Scènes de la vie future (1930), il doit permettre d'interroger la modernité d'un récit en étroite interdépendance avec son siècle, ainsi que son aptitude à éclairer notre présent. L’opposition séculaire entre l’Homme et la Machine fait-elle toujours sens aujourd’hui ? Les vues duhaméliennes sur l’« automate » font-elles écho à notre rapport actuel aux robots dont le mimétisme humain est de plus en plus saisissant ? Quelles sont les circulations éthiques, philosophiques et culturelles qui irriguent la pérennité et la modernité de Scènes de la vie future? Quels sont au contraire ses éléments fanés, en raison de leur anachronisme ? Une réception renouvelée et actuelle de cette œuvre serait-elle féconde et possible ?

Pas de (ré)conciliation sans décolonisation ?
Dialogue(s) et dissonance(s) entre communautés autochtones, allochtones et autorités publiques en Amérique du Nord
Malgré un processus dit de réconciliation initié en 2008 au Canada, le dialogue entre populations autochtones, allochtones et autorités publiques au Canada et aux États-Unis, quand il est amorcé, semble souvent se heurter à des obstacles. Si certains sont évidents, tels que la discrimination systémique qui perdure envers les Autochtones, d’autres le sont moins, et découlent par exemple des difficultés à exposer et assumer la mémoire des crimes passés ou de l’éloignement entre les différents acteurs en question, produit du colonialisme. Face à ce constat, ce colloque se donne pour but de chercher à cerner ce qui demeure de l’ordre du colonialisme, du néo-colonialisme, de la colonialité, des impasses du post-colonialisme – autant de concepts essentiels qu’il s’agira d’explorer. En somme, l’objectif est d’étudier ce qui empêche encore, souvent, une relation « équitable et inclusive » entre populations autochtones et allochtones.

L’engouement pour les séries en France et dans le monde ne cesse de progresser. À l’écran, ce goût pour la sérialité a plus d’un siècle. Des Mystères de New York (Louis Gasnier et George B. Seitz, 1914) ou Judex (Louis Feuillade, 1917), à Lupin (George Kay et François Uzan, 2021) ou Stranger Things (Matt et Ross Duffer, 2023), les formes d’écritures, les modes de production et les habitudes de consommation de ces produits culturels ont changé tout en conservant certaines particularités propres au phénomène de la sérialité. Ce colloque international a pour objectif, dans une perspective culturaliste, d’appréhender les films à épisodes dans leur globalité, de leur production à leur réception en passant par leur circulation et par leur écriture. Il s’agira également de mieux comprendre la fascination des publics pour cette forme narrative, révélatrice de nouvelles pratiques culturelles à l’image de la société de consommation émergente.

« Cahiers Charles Fourier » – Numéro 33
L’exportation du fouriérisme en Amérique a pris des formes multiples. À quelques exceptions près, les formes concrètes de cette exportation sont peu et mal connues dans le monde francophone. Ce numéro 33 des Cahiers Charles Fourier comble pour partie cette lacune en rendant compte de la diffusion de la pensée fouriériste aux États-Unis au cours du XIXe siècle. L’ambition est de regarder comment la mémoire des communautés fouriéristes a pu, ou non, se maintenir au fil des décennies. S’inscrivant dans des perspectives méthodologiques variées, les articles mobilisent une diversité de disciplines et de pratiques (archéologie, histoire, droit, photographie et, plus largement, sciences sociales).

Recent events in the United States remind us to what extent the South is both a place of distinctive identities and a space sharing a common heritage. According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”. These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. On the occasion of the release of Michael Goldfield’s latest book, The Southern Key (2020) we want to address these issues during an international symposium in the presence of the author.

American Politics through the Lens of Michael Goldfield’s Work

According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”" (Goldfield, 2020). These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. For this conference, we propose three different angles of approach: the interaction between race, class and capital; the spatial dimension of these interactions; the causes for and the perpetuation of racism in the United States.

Réformes et révolutions, indépendances et républiques dans les Amériques des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles
À travers cette journée d'étude nous nous proposons, dans la perspective de la rénovation historiographique menée depuis ces dernières années, de présenter les travaux les plus actuels sur les révolutions et la formation des républiques dans les Amériques. Nous nous intéresserons, en particulier, au « comment » de ces processus en regardant de près la manière dont les différents acteurs ont géré la mobilisation et l’occupation militaires, les conflits communautaires et socio-raciaux, les réseaux commerciaux locaux, régionaux et interaméricains, la paralysie et vacance institutionnelles, les relations interpersonnelles, les allégeances à géométrie variable, la question raciale, dans un moment de divisions profondes mais aussi de renégociation des hiérarchies et des appartenances.

Telling and exhibiting minorities in France and North America
Minorities and their museum mediations
In this symposium, we propose to examine the relationship between minorities and museums and sites of memory in North America and France and to abandon the majority viewpoint, expressed in terms of domination and assignment, to reframe the perspective. Situating ourselves from the point of view of the minority experience, we will be able to consider the minority’s agency. During this conference, we propose to bring together the perspectives of social science researchers and museum professionals to examine how minority history has found its place in museums in the United States, France and Canada, and the evolution of these narratives.

The Politics of Food in the United States

This issue of Politique américaine seeks to address these interactions and to analyze the politics of food in grassroots social movements. Beyond the legitimate issues linked with public health and public policies, food-based social movements often advocate alternative ways of living together and provide a new perspective on civil society that is built outside the mainstream. Food is sustenance, but it is also a locus of socialization, sociability and education (Flammang), where issues of gender (Counihan), race (Witt, Opie) and class (Finn), are played out.

Online Course on the US Original Constitution and its Reception in Brazil
In times of Covid19, the Federal University of Paraiba, UFPB, opens this course to the global audience. Students from the world will have the opportunity to discuss the USA and Brazil's constitutional history from the Founding Era to the end of the nineteenth century with an instructor and Brazilian students of its Graduate Program in Law. The UFPB offers these lectures through the Google Meet platform with a limited number of spots for better development of the studies and discussions amongst participants. W. E. B. Du Bois, Scholar, Activist and Passeur between America, Europe and Africa
Foundations, Circulations and Legacies
Trained in Classical languages (Latin and Greek), Philosophy, Sociology and History, both in the US and Europe, W. E. B. Du Bois’s intellectual inquiry into the nature of Blackness covers a wide range of disciplines, from History to Political Philosophy, from Sociology to Literature and Poetry, from Art Criticism to Musicology. The colloquium will embrace this multiplicity of approaches which characterizes Du Bois’s work and, at the same time, capture the profound unity of his thought which can be found in the analysis of the “concept of race.” Special attention will also be given to the determinant role played by W. E. B. Du Bois in the transatlantic circulation of knowledge and intellectual commerce between the US, Europe and Africa.

Jan Valtin retrospective (1941-1951)
Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’écrivains dont l’œuvre fut aussi fulgurante et la vie aussi pleine de rebondissements que celle de Jan Valtin. Son premier livre, Out of the Night, s’imposa dès sa sortie comme le plus grand succès de l'édition américaine depuis Gone with the wind (Autant en emporte le vent) ; il fut vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires aux États-Unis, en moins d’un an, et fut plus tard traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Ce récit à couper le souffle de la vie d’un révolutionnaire allemand sous la République de Weimar et la première période du nazisme avait pour mérite d’éclairer la façon dont l’action des communistes contre la social-démocratie en tant qu’ennemi principal avait conduit à l’alliance objective des totalitarismes pour détruire la démocratie bourgeoise.

Left-wing radicalism in the United States: a foreign creed?
Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)
This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?
