  Medieval Borders and the Environment

  This volume, provisionally titled Medieval Borders and the Environment, will be submitted to Brill to be included in the new series “Elements, Nature, Environment: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from the Ancient to the Early Modern World” edited by Dr. Marilina Cesario and Dr. Andreas Lammer. The volume’s goal is to provide a venue for interdisciplinary research on the time period between about 500 and 1500 or slightly later. It intends to promote study on underrepresented parts of the medieval world, broadly construed, as well as articles that examine interconnections across regions and cultures. Proposals for essays in english are warmly welcomed on the topic “borders, the elements, and the environment”.

  Machines, humains et animaux dans les mondes autochtones

  This special issue of EchoGéo calls for contributions that focus on the modes of existence of machines in these peripheral areas, as critical materialities and unexplored archives of the current spatial, social, political or environmental reconfigurations. If machines have so rarely been studied, it is because their exogenous and a priori standardizing character is problematic. On the contrary, we formulate the hypothesis that these materialities are a source of creativity and memory and that they constitute a privileged archive for understanding the contemporaneity of these societies throughout the world. The aim is to show what machines do to these lands and, in turn, what these lands do to machines.

  Mina Loy and Her Networks

  Following on the heels of the recent modernist celebrations of 1922, 2023 marks the centenary of the publication of Mina Loy’s first collection of poems Lunar Baedecker, published in Paris by Robert McAlmon in his Contact collection. This conference aims to prompt new perspectives on Loy scholarship, paying particular attention to her networks and her presence in French artistic circles and to the French reception of her work.

  Ukraine Under Fire: The Visual Arts in Ukraine and Abroad Since 2014

  To say that Ukraine has a complicated relationship with Russia is an understatement: the region was under direct rule in the imperial period, experienced a period of freedom after 1917, followed by repressive rule through large periods of the Soviet era, and then regained independence in 1991. Now, Ukraine faces Russian hostility and the violation of its territorial integrity, which began in February 2014 with the occupations of the Crimea and Donbas region. I solicit abstracts from scholars, critics, gallerists, and artists whose work reflects upon the role of the visual arts during the current conflict in this region. Their topics should explore how artists have dealt with the Russian invasion and other forms of hostilities in recent years.

  Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War

  This special webinar celebrates the launch of the project’s public heritage exhibition atkadocheritage.be. This online exhibition contains a selection of contributions produced by the project’s partners, outlining a wealth of civil society mobilizations by Central and Eastern European migrants in the Low Countries during the period 1933-1989. The exhibition’s purpose is to emphasize the potential that forgotten stories like these can play in curating the heritage, commemorating, and documenting the histories of the unique circumstances that these Central European émigré communities faced, living in Belgium and the Netherlands, during this tumultuous period of modern history.

  Ce colloque a pour but d’interroger la notion de consommation légitime dans les cités médiévales entre le XII^e et le XVI^e siècle. Qu’est-ce que la, ou plutôt les bonnes consommations ? Qui est légitime à dire la frontière entre l’indispensable et le superflu ? Pourquoi cette capacité à dire la norme devient-elle de plus en plus cruciale dans des mondes urbains en mutation rapide ? Le colloque sera particulièrement attentif à mener une approche comparatiste entre les différents espaces de l’Occident médiéval (Italie, péninsule ibérique, France, Angleterre, Pays-Bas, Empire...).

  Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration - Postdoc position

  The Laboratoire d’études et de recherche sur le monde anglophone, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), is shortly to commence a major academic research project, “Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration” (MaILHoC). Working with partners in the UK, Spain, and Norway, the aim of the project is to explore the impacts of industrial patronage – with a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of this relationship – on European museums of science and industry in both comparative and historical context. The project will compare insights drawn from a wide spread of historical case studies with a range of contemporary workshops exploring the ethics of industrial patronage. This position is based at AMU’s Humanities Faculty in Aix-en-Provence. The successful candidate will carry out research in archives in France and Britain while also participating in events organised by the various partners.

  Dans un contexte contemporain d’industrialisation des biens symboliques, de libéralisation des marchés culturels et de mise en compétition croissante des individus, des œuvres et des institutions qui les produisent, les récompenses et dispositifs de consécration et de reconnaissance se multiplient dans tous les domaines et répertoires artistiques, amenant plusieurs auteurs et autrices à identifier un phénomène de « prolifération », d’ « inflation » ou de « sédimentation » récompensatoire depuis le dernier quart du XX^e siècle.   Cette journée consacrée aux résidences princières ou nobiliaires situées en milieu urbain ou extra urbain sera l’occasion de questionner, sur un arc chronologique et géographique très ample, ces lieux qui regroupaient de nombreuses fonctions structurantes dans les sociétés anciennes. Lieux de pouvoir, de savoir, de sociabilité, ils étaient également des lieux de travail et organisaient des espaces économiques sur des distances plus ou moins vastes. Ce domaine de recherche a fait l’objet, ces dernières années, d’un renouvellement documentaire et épistémologique que cette journée souhaite mettre en valeur, à travers notamment les recherches portées par les jeunes chercheurs.

  Afro-Diasporic Imaginaries in 20th and 21st–Century Latin American and Caribbean Literature and Visual Arts

  In this volume, we would like to analyze in depth the paths taken by the 20^th and 21^st century Latin American and Caribbean letters in relation to the experience of the black diaspora in dialogue with the visual arts, as well as in relation to the main themes, forms and techniques used by artist, playwrights, poets, storytellers and writers. In a context of increasing violence and intolerance towards minorities in Latin America, we will welcome analyses that focus on the relationship between literature and the resistance of the cultures created by the black diaspora.

  Patterns of Miscommunication in Contemporary East-Central European Cinema

  We would like to invite scholars from the fields of film, media and communication studies, but also of linguistics, literary studies, political studies, anthropology, etc., to a joint reflection on East-Central European contemporary cinema. Much of East-Central European cinema after 1989 seems to thematize the issue of communicational barriers. If we posit, with Casetti, that films are sites of production and circulation of discourses, which can be interpreted as symbolic constructions referring to a cluster of meanings conveyed by a specific society at a moment of its existence, then what are the meanings transmitted by this cinematic reflection on communication blockage? What are the main cinematic discourses developed around miscommunication issues? To what extent do they create a common imaginary for this part of Europe?

  The Center d’études francoprovenzales René Willien is organizing a summer school in Saint-Nicolas, for its second edition entitled: Alpine languages and cultures in the making: the Francoprovençal area. Eligible candidates are students from different backgrounds (bachelor, master and doctoral students), researchers in dialectology, linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, ethnology, geography, language didactics, etc. Within the limits of available places, applications are also accepted from anyone interested in the disciplines in question, even in the absence of specific titles. The school will take place from July 10 to July 14, 2023.
