Who Cares? De la psychiatrie dans l’aire anglophone is a group of scholars from the Université Paris Nanterre and Université Sorbonne Nouvelle formed in 2023 and dedicated to the history of psychiatry in the English-speaking world. A central ambition of the Who Cares project has been the organization of a series of international conferences on the history of psychiatry in the English-speaking world. The first event took place on 6-8 February 2025 at Université Paris Nanterre and gathered scholars around the topic “People and Places”. This Call for Papers invites contributions that critically engage with the theme of our second event: “Theories and Policies”

Cinquième conférence internationale des géographes et géographies anarchistes
Après les quatre conférences internationales des géographes et des géographies anarchistes organisées à Reggio Emilia (Italie, 2017), Rabastens (France, 2019), Oaxaca (Mexique, 2021) et Córdoba (Argentine, 2023), la cinquième aura lieu dans la ville de São Paulo (Brésil) en 2025. Ce lieu est très significatif car São Paulo, l’USP et plus généralement le Brésil, ont une tradition de réflexion et d’organisation de conférences internationales sur des figures historiques de la géographie anarchiste.

Les contributions porteront aussi bien sur l’administration des mobilités métropole française/territoires colonisés et la construction des dispositifs normatifs d’encadrement des migrations que sur l’expérience des migrants et migrantes.

« D’Auguste renommée » : les personnalités locales de l’Antiquité à nos jours
Cette journée cherchera à interroger la place et le rôle des « personnalités » à l’échelle locale : épouse de maire, grand patron, médecin, homme politique, ouvriers autant de figures qui ont marqué la vie à l’échelle locale, organisé les formes de sociabilités et généré une littérature les encensant ou les critiquant. Ces personnalités locales peuvent être définies comme des individus à la position morale forte, dont la légitimité est acquise par reconnaissance au sein d’un groupe ou d’une communauté, et alliant valeurs locales et universelles.

Insecurity in the Age of Labour Formalisation: Informal Work in Europe
1870–1970
Free wage labour is commonly presented as the focus, if not the very core, of the history of labour in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The conference aims to challenge this narrative by focusing on multiple forms and fields of informal work. The conference will explore the insecurity of informal work. It will ask how widespread in Europe was the unregulated employment that can be described as insecure in the very century generally regarded as the era of increasingly formalised labour, and will consider which factors were thereby decisive. Thus, the focus will not be on the hard-won rise and safeguarding of free-wage labour, already so frequently examined in labour history. Rather, the spotlight will be on how the insecurity associated with informal work was not only tacitly but also quite openly accepted, or even actively promoted. The conference will also investigate the social and political conflicts that accompanied this recurrent phenomenon.

II NETCOR Congress
Four years after the foundation of NETCOR at NOVA FCSH, in Lisbon, and after several interdisciplinary meetings and congresses held in recent years in several participating research centres that were the founders of this Network, in Europe and Brazil, the II NETCOR Congress is announced. The theme of this first edition of the Biennal Congress, of an international and interdisciplinary nature, is devoted to labour transformations and aims to discuss theoretical and empirical explanations of the changing nature of labour organization and labour regimes in the contemporary period, from 1850 to 1945.

The challenges of a new world order
Ouverte dans un Paris portant encore les stigmates des bombardements de la guerre, la conférence de la paix de 1919-1920 frappe les esprits par son caractère cosmopolite et son ambition sans précédent. Là où le congrès de Vienne s’était donné pour tâche, en 1814-1815, la réorganisation de l’ordre européen, la conférence de Paris a bien en vue la redéfinition de l’ordre mondial. Objet, dès son ouverture, de l’expression de doutes, voire de sarcasmes, la conférence n’en porte pas moins les grandes espérances du retour à la paix.

Left-wing radicalism in the United States: a foreign creed?
Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)
This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?

Workshop on Transnational History of Socialism (Second Half of 19th Century to 1914)
Two centuries after the birth of Karl Marx, European researchers show a renewed interest in socialism studies. However, this has coincided with the unprecedented decline of the traditional workers’ movement. Frequently, these studies involve an international and transnational dimension. Internationalism can be studied under this light. Using new methods, the current seminar aims to study the relations and differences between socialism and socialists of different nationalities. The framework of the nation-state, still predominant in the studies about the transmission and diffusion of the Left ideas, must be transcended to grasp the global challenge [Middell, 2004]. Moreover, refocusing socialism studies in this global direction means finally exceeding the classic Eurocentric vision.
