Visiting Professorships at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all professorship applications is January 15, 2013. Two professorships are available at the Courtauld Institute to present the best recent scholarship on historical American art. A twelve-week professorship requires administering one full-term course integrated with the institute’s curriculum and participating in other scholarly activities. A one-week intensive professorship entails a public scholarly event, a seminar, and a special visit to a London gallery, archive, collection, or library relevant to American art history. Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all fellowship applications is January 15, 2013. This two-year postdoctoral fellowship supports advanced inquiry in the history of American art, conservation, and museum studies and is integrated with the postdoctoral fellowship program of the Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum. The selected fellow teaches three historical American art courses, participates in scholarly activities organized by the institute, and organizes an international scholarly event. American Art in Dialogue with Africa and the African Diaspora
Since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade, Africa has played an important — albeit shifting, contested, and often unseen — role in the history of art of the United States. Conference organizers seek original, innovative scholarship investigating heretofore unexamined aspects of this transatlantic dialogue, from the visual culture of slavery and abolitionism to American modernism; from the Black Arts Movement to the contemporary art world. -

En contrepoint de l’exposition « La ville magique » présentée au LaM - Lille métropole Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut jusqu’au 13 janvier 2013, un colloque international intitulé « Ville,vertige, vestiges, veille » se tiendra le 23 novembre au Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art à Paris et le 24 novembre au LaM, à Villeneuve d’Ascq. Ce colloque approfondira les pistes de réflexion amorcées dans l’exposition. Huit chercheurs de différentes disciplines croiseront leurs regards sur quatre thématiques transversales : le vertige, les vestiges, la veille et les voies. -

Philoséries episode 5. The philosophy of TV series
Le cycle de colloques « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées » se propose d’analyser chaque année une série télévisée déterminée, sur un mode à la fois monographique et interdisciplinaire. Pour 2013, renouant avec les thématiques ouvertes en 2011 avec le colloque consacré à la série 24h chrono, nous proposons de concentrer notre attention sur À la Maison Blanche (The West Wing), série américaine en sept saisons créée par Aaron Sorkin et initialement diffusée de 1999 à 2006. Mettant en scène de façon à la fois uchronique et réaliste sept ans de vie « à la Maison Blanche », et plus précisément dans « l’aile ouest » (« The West Wing ») qui abrite les bureaux de la Présidence américaine, la série suit les deux mandats successifs du président démocrate Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) et de son équipe.

Philoséries issue 4: The philosophy of TV series
Dans le cadre du cycle annuel « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées », ouvert en 2009 par un colloque sur Buffy contre les vampires et poursuivi en 2010 et 2011 respectivement par les journées « Séries d’élite, culture populaire : le cas HBO » et 24 heures chrono, nous nous proposons cette année de nous pencher sur l’univers des séries Battlestar Galactica. Si conformément au projet d’ensemble du cycle, nous comptons nous concentrer sur le cœur de la « franchise », à savoir les différentes séries télévisées (Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica etc.), les communications prenant appui pour tout ou partie sur les autres supports fictionnels disponibles (romans, jeux, bandes dessinées, etc.) seront aussi les bienvenues, tant il est vrai que la richesse de ce type d’univers ne peut être correctement appréhendée sans la prise en compte de ses multiples formes d’expression. -

This two-year postdoctoral fellowship focuses on the history of American art and visual culture. The selected fellow teaches four semester-long courses to undergraduate and master’s-level students at a French university, participates in local seminars at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art and at the hosting university, and organizes academic programs on related research topics. -

Terra Foundation Publication Grants (2013)
These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. Projects must be under contract for publication. -

These eight-week residential fellowships provide the opportunity to pursue individual work and research in a community of peers while being mentored by senior artists and scholars. Ten fellowships are awarded annually to predoctoral students at an advanced stage of research and writing on pre-1980 American art and visual culture and to artists with a master’s degree. -

Terra Foundation Research Travel Grants to the United States (2013)
For doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars
Six to nine grants are awarded annually to doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars outside the United States to travel to the United States for research on pre-1980 American art and visual culture. Doctoral students receive up to $6,000; postdoctoral scholars (those who received their degree within ten years of the application deadline) receive up to $9,000. Destinations and duration of travel are determined by fellows. -

The Terra Foundation Fellowships in American Art seek to foster a cross-cultural dialogue about the history of art of the United States up to 1980. They support work by scholars from abroad who are researching American art or by U.S. scholars who are investigating international contexts for American art. -
The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize
The Terra Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art (ca. 1500-1980). Ph.D. candidates and above are eligible to participate. Preference will be given to studies that address American art within a cross-cultural context and offer new ways of thinking about the material. A strong emphasis on visual analysis is encouraged. Manuscripts previously published in a foreign language are eligible if released within the last two years. For scholars from English-language countries, only unpublished manuscripts will be considered. -

The history of Brazilian cinema
Depuis le début du XXe siècle, l’histoire occupe une place de premier plan dans le cinéma brésilien, qu’il soit documentaire ou de fiction. Indépendamment des époques et des styles considérés, l’utilisation d’images d’archives, l’interprétation d’épisodes et de personnages historiques, le recours aux allégories sont très fréquents dans les films brésiliens, qui portent à l’écran des stéréotypes et symboles nationaux pour les réaffirmer ou, au contraire, les détourner. Quel sens pouvons-nous accorder à ces représentations du passé ? Cette journée d’étude a pour but d’analyser le dialogue noué entre le récit cinématographique, l’histoire et la mémoire au Brésil, à partir d’une analyse des enjeux esthétiques et identitaires des films de fiction, des documentaires et des productions qui se situent à la frontière de ces deux genres. -

The death of the charismatical leader
Dans le cadre d’un projet innovant de l’université Paris-Sorbonne, et à la suite du séminaire « Charisme et image politique », coorganisé par l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes hispaniques (la Casa de Velázquez de Madrid), l’université Paris-Sorbonne Paris IV (Crimic EA 2561) et l’université de Valencia (Espagne), qui s’est tenu à Valencia dans la première partie de l’année 2011 (février, avril et juin), nous souhaitons prolonger la réflexion sur le rôle de l’image photomécanique dans la construction des figures charismatiques du XXe siècle à partir d’un angle thématique précis, celui de la mort du leader. -
