Cette journée d’étude entend montrer comment les biais inhérents au fonctionnement de l’institution universitaire et à la recherche académique participent à produire certaines formes d’ignorance pouvant impacter la société civile. Alors qu’on assiste, avec le développement d’internet et des réseaux sociaux, à une explosion de la désinformation — au point que certain·es chercheur·euses parlent d’un phénomène de « post-vérité » — il semble nécessaire de prendre conscience des angles morts de la méthode scientifique et de la recherche académique, qui font aujourd’hui autorité en matière de production de connaissances fiables

L’objectif des savants. Photographies et fabrique des sciences modernes (XIXe-XXe siècles)
Ce colloque propose de dresser un panorama des nouvelles perspectives sur les interactions entre photographie et sciences aux XIXe et XXe siècles, en explorant les enjeux culturels, sociaux, économiques et institutionnels qui les traversent. La photographie y est envisagée à la fois comme outil de connaissance, vecteur de diffusion et objet patrimonial ; il s’agira d’interroger ses usages dans la fabrique des savoirs. Quatre axes sont proposés : les apports épistémologiques de la photographie dans les sciences ; les dispositifs techniques et les pratiques matérielles ; les acteurs et dynamiques sociales impliqués dans la production et l’usage des images ; enfin, la place de la photographie dans la culture scientifique et sa réception par le grand public.

L’infrastructure de recherche en information scientifique et technique CollEx-Persée développe un programme à vocation nationale consacré aux archives scientifiques. Dans ce cadre, deux journées d’étude inaugurales sont organisées sur le thème : « Archiver les savoirs : de la collecte à l’usage ». Chercheurs et professionnels de la documentation sont invités à une réflexion commune autour de la production des archives de la recherche, de leur usage, et des services et outils à offrir pour les insérer dans des projets de recherche et les valoriser.

Conservation-restoration of embroidered textiles from the Renaissane to the 19th century
Technè, n°60, 2025-2
The study of embroidered textiles presents several points of interest: research may focus on the embroidery itself (materials, techniques, patterns), its supporting medium (nature, composition of materials, type of weaving), as well as the relationships between these two fields. We aim to identify topics of discussion by juxtaposing ancient texts with materials analysis; to present examples of the conservation of embroidered textiles with an emphasis on the choice of technical protocols; and to consider the difficult problem of exhibiting these rare and precious textiles.

Ces journées seront également l'occasion de dégager les spécificités des approches des bibliothèques dans la prise en compte de ce matériau.

List, compile, assemble: small forms and the power of collecting
Workshop of the research training group “The literary and epistemic history of small forms”
Unraveling the various asymmetries inherent in collecting requires shifting our focus from collections themselves to how collections come into being. This entails viewing collections as both purposeful and contingent results of scientific or cultural practice. Drawing on the history of collecting and the history of paperwork, this interdisciplinary workshop aims to enhance our understanding of the collecting processes involving written testimonies, inscriptions, and texts. With a focus on contexts such as artistic-literary primitivism or colonial encounters, the workshop proposes a comparative examination of the asymmetries associated with collecting via three main axes: actor-networks involved in the production of collections, the role of collecting in the management of life, and how collections emerge from asymmetrical media practices.

Scholarships from the Gerda Henkel Foundation at the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of the European Enlightenment. Research into the history of knowledge and science is a core concern of the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of the European Enlightenment (IZEA) in Halle. Under the heading "Structures of Knowledge", the centre's four main research areas include the examination of practices of knowledge appropriation, questions of knowledge order and the techniques of knowledge distribution in the 18th century.

Journées d’étude sur la lutte contre les épidémies et la prévention en santé publique
The National Archives presented in Paris the exhibition Facing epidemics, from the Black Death to the present day from October 12, 2022 to February 6, 2023. In continuation of this, the National Archives and the Ministry of Health and Prevention are organizing two days of study to draw up an inventory of research on the fight against epidemics throughout history and the contributions of research in the humanities and social sciences to the implementation of prevention policies. A first day will be an opportunity to question the contribution of historians to the knowledge of the response of societies to major epidemics over the long term. The second day will focus on prevention policies, through debates on defining their scope and how research can enrich public health policies.

Ecological histories of photography. Science, politics, philosophy, materiality
Revue « Transbordeur. Photographie, histoire, société »
Using a long-term historical perspective, this issue of Transbordeur will examine the relationship between photography and ecology as understood in multiple ways: 1) ecology as an interdisciplinary science that emerged in the nineteenth century, 2) the specific political agenda of different movements defending environmental causes as public concern for them increased significantly in the second half of the twentieth-century 3) ecology as the object of social and philosophical movements which have brought into question the binary opposition of nature and culture in Western society, and finally 4) the ecological impact of the photographic industry in its dependence on extraction, petrochemical derivatives, and more recently digital technologies.

Matières noires : sens et substances
Le numéro 55 de la revue Technè présentera un dossier intitulé : « Matières noires : sens et substances ». La couleur noire a déjà été analysée dans des ouvrages ainsi que dans le cadre d’expositions sans que sa matérialité ait toutefois été abordée en détail. Pourtant, si certaines couleurs ne prennent pas de pluriel, le noir assume bien le sien car il est des noirs et des matières noires. Le numéro souhaite offrir une vision matérielle aussi exhaustive que possible des objets et des corpus patrimoniaux noirs par (i) nature, (ii) transformations intentionnelles, et (iii) altérations afin d’identifier et de mettre en exergue des matériaux et des substances derrière la dénomination générique « matière noire » souvent évoquée sur les cartels, les fiches d’objets et dans les interrogations des chargés de collections.

Les planches de l’Encyclopédie en lumière
Depuis plusieurs décennies et l’impulsion donnée par les travaux de référence de Jacques Proust, de John Lough, de Richard N. Schwab puis de Frank A. Kafker, les études sur l’Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (1751-1772) de Diderot et D’Alembert se sont multipliées. Aujourd’hui, l’Édition numérique collaborative et critique de l’Encyclopédie (ENCCRE) – grâce à sa numérisation de grande qualité des pages gravées et à ses fonctionnalités de mise en regard directe de l’illustration et de l’explication qui lui correspond – permet de redécouvrir d’un œil neuf ce trésor iconographique et offre des ressources renouvelées pour l’explorer. La tenue d’un colloque international permettra de dresser un point d’étape sur les recherches spécifiquement dédiées aux planches de l’Encyclopédie.

Scientific congresses and knowledge networks
Issues and methods for processing event participation data
This research day focuses on scientific congresses and conferences as both geographical and disciplinary spaces for the circulation of knowledge. Emphasis is placed on the methods available for studying data on events’ participation, noting that unlike the study of bibliographic corpora, which benefit from well-stabilised bibliometric methodologies, the study of scientific events not as well established. Different approaches will be addressed: ethnography, analysis of co-participation networks, content analysis. By bringing together historians working on congresses from the turn of the 20th century with social scientists working on congresses from the second half of the 20th century and today, the day will bring out similarities but also differences in approaches, types of sources, questions and methodological obstacles.

Medical uses of mineral waters (1300-1850)
The journal Histoire, médecine et santé is launching a call for proposals for a thematic issue devoted to the ‘water medicine’ before the rise of 19th century hydrotherapy. We would like to solicit original research focusing on the therapeutic uses of mineral waters in a transhistorical perspective. Proposals can be sent, for example, on the administrative management of mineral waters and their therapeutics, on the geographical issues related to water medicine, their localisation and their hierarchy. The place of mineral waters in a medical market could also be studied as well as their integration to economies of knowledge. Finally, mineral waters are a formidable starting point to think about environmental medicine. The calendar of this call aims at allowing the integration of emerging projects and the dialogue between the contributors. Proposals must be sent by May 21, 2021. Papers will be submitted in January 2022.

The Middle Ages of the Social Sciences
The present issue of the Revue d’histoire des sciences humaines intends to gather inquiries into specific uses of the Middle Ages in twentieth century social sciences. The reference to the Middle Ages may result from a scholarly acquaintance with the medieval world, as well as from tools forged by medieval studies. Alternatively, it may be correlated with intricate cultural mediations, for example through religion or literature. We would like to invite the practitioners of the various disciplines of the SSH (psychoanalysis, sociology, historical anthropology, history, the history of science and knowledge, art history, and philosophy, among others) to contribute to this issue either with a case study, or with a broader methodological or epistemological reflection on their scientific and knowledge practices envisioned from an historical point of view.

La revue Histoire, médecine et santé lance un appel à contributions pour un dossier thématique portant sur les données médicales. Le big data s’est aujourd’hui imposé dans le champ de la santé : les données en grand nombre sont mobilisées dans la recherche biomédicale, pour diagnostiquer la maladie ou bien envisager un traitement. Nous aimerions que ce numéro thématique questionne la notion de données médicales dans un temps long, en partant du principe qu’elles constituent tous les éléments mobilisés par les soignant·e·s et les chercheurs·euses pour appréhender l’état de santé des individus et leurs éventuelles pathologies. Il s’agit notamment de réfléchir aux mécanismes de pouvoir sur les corps produits par un regard médical fondé sur l’élaboration de données sérielles et d’investiguer la manière dont elle façonne les savoirs médicaux et la définition même des pathologies.

Figures for deciphering Empires and dominating the world: the colonial statistics of former empires in the 19th and 20th centuries
Les interprétations économétriques des effets de la domination coloniale aux XIXe et XXe siècles fondées sur les statistiques coloniales et les recherches qui interrogent les interactions entre les institutions internationales, les empires coloniaux et les populations colonisées, suscitent un intérêt renouvelé pour la production statistique impériale. Celle-ci reste pourtant mal connue. Le premier objectif de cet atelier est d’approfondir la réflexion et les connaissances sur les liens entre les statistiques produites en situation coloniale et à l’échelle impériale et la domination à partir de questions concrètes et d’études précisément situées.
