Financing humanitarian aid and development in the Middle East since the mid-19th century

Cet atelier exploratoire abordera les ressources financières de l’aide transnationale, leur gestion et leur circulation, en examinant les pratiques, les discours et les stratégies mises en œuvre, de l'émergence de l'humanitaire moderne, autour de la crise de 1860 au Liban, jusqu’aux récents bouleversements tels que la guerre en Syrie. L’analyse sera menée à diverses échelles, avec une attention aux réflexions sur le temps long et aux interrelations entre le local et le global. Il s'agit de mettre en dialogue diverses approches des sciences humaines et sociales, ainsi que savoirs académiques et pratiques. Sont particulièrement bienvenues les propositions portant sur un cas d’étude, un corpus de sources, un retour de terrain, des outils techniques et méthodologiques.

Uprisings and resistance: contemporary issues of cinema and visual arts in Iran and across the diaspora

How can we look at Iranian cinema and the visual arts in relation to Iran today when the country has been experiencing an important episode of uprising and resistance, since September 16, 2022? Indeed, as in 1979, 1999, and 2009, and as in 2017 and 2018, it is obvious that images play a decisive role in the constitution of events. Iranian artists and filmmakers are indeed demonstrating an exceptional mobilization and effervescence in order to bear witness to the ongoing protests, but also to support them and mobilize international public opinion.

Séismes en Turquie et en Syrie : quels défis pour les relations internationales et l’aide humanitaire ?

Les séismes qui secouent la Turquie et la Syrie depuis le 6 février 2023 sont sans précédent au Moyen-Orient depuis le XII^e siècle. Dans une région déjà frappée par la guerre et les tensions régionales, l’ampleur des dégâts matériels d’une part, et le nombre de victimes qui avoisine les 50 000 morts d’autre part, focalisent l’attention médiatique et remettent le lien entre politique et action humanitaire au centre du débat. Cette table ronde vise à sortir du traitement médiatique de cette catastrophe pour interroger ce qu’ils posent comme défis aux relations internationales.

The theme of the 12th European Days, is entitled: “Crossed Perspectives on European Borders: Mobility, security and borders”.The goal of the conference is to tackle issues such as borders, new forms of mobility, migration policies and securitization in a changing context strongly marked by the financial and economic crisis in the region.

Experimental and alternative urbanism in the MENA region: building a critical and ‘political’ research on the ‘new’ modes of making the city

Italian Association for Middle Eastern Studies (SeSaMO) Annual Conference - Panel 12

This panel focuses on the renewed forms to build the city in the MENA region (‘environmental planning’, ‘resilient urbanism’, ‘responsive urbanism’, participatory and ‘collaborative’ initiatives, ‘sustainable’ urbanism…). The panel will tackle two types of spaces: informal settlements, where experimental forms and new methods are at work, and major eco-projects which have adopted in recent years ecological processes, along with global strategies. The major research hypothesis is that the MENA region shows at least since the 2000s new forms of urbanism that, to varying degrees, bring weak but maybe harbinger/forerunner signals of change and innovation, driven by the concepts of environment and sustainability. This is valid for both urban governance and the theoretical underpinnings of it, whereby professional training and the learning ways of doing, thinking and working on the city, shows some progressive changes. The panel will seek to understand why, however, the MENA seems to experience difficulties in ‘refreshing its software’ on regional, national and local theory and practice of urban planning.

The departments of contemporary studies of IFEA (Istanbul) and IFPO organize a workshop in Erbil, the 29th of May 2014. This workshop aims at analysing the evolving dynamics of the Kurdish populated areas in Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. More precisely, it will focus on the changing interactions between the nation-states and the Kurdish political actors, and on the impacts of these transformations on the modes of local governance.

Mobilisations collectives et nouvelles configurations sociales, politiques et économiques

Les multiples projets de partenariats entre l’Europe et la Méditerranée ont contribué à concentrer le regard des chercheurs sur le développement dans la Méditerranée dans le cadre des approches institutionnalistes des rapports nord /sud et de l’aide au développement (Confluences Mediterranée, N° 67, 2008 ; Eurorient, n° 27, 2008, les publications d’Euromesco). Sans nier les apports indispensables de cette démarche, elle contribue toutefois à lisser les différences des multiples espaces méditerranéens, à privilégier les dynamiques « du dehors » sur les dynamiques « du dedans » et enfin et peut être surtout à ne pas tenir suffisamment compte des nouvelles configurations sociales, politiques et économiques (secteur privé interne et international, révolution des moyens de communication, perte d’efficience des Etats, transformations démographiques et des structures familiales, limites des modèles de croissance, etc..) qui informent la problématique du développement dans ces sociétés.
