  Educators in the United States: History, Resistance and Circulations

  Cette journée d’étude propose d’interroger l’éducation aux États-Unis au prisme de ses travailleur·es au travers de plusieurs axes thématiques de recherche pluridisciplinaires. Toutes les sources et méthodes de recherches sont les bienvenues. Les communications s'inscriront dans les quatre thématiques suivantes et détaillées dans l'argumentaire : formation et trajectoires professionnelles du corps enseignant ; Le corps enseignant, un monde du travail ; organisations, syndicats, luttes et résistances ; représentations, mystifications et politisation du corps enseignant.

  Class, Race and Place in the US South

  American Politics through the Lens of Michael Goldfield’s Work

  Recent events in the United States remind us to what extent the South is both a place of distinctive identities and a space sharing a common heritage. According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”" (Goldfield, 2020). These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. For this conference, we propose three different angles of approach: the interaction between race, class and capital; the spatial dimension of these interactions; the causes for and the perpetuation of racism in the United States.

  Culture visuelle du geste efficace et danses de société (1910-1940)

  Cette journée s’intéressera à l’iconographie des manuels de danse de société, diagrammes, photographies, et tentera de comprendre comment certains choix graphiques et leurs évolutions relèvent d’une culture visuelle du geste efficace qui infuse la société de l’entre-deux-guerres, en Amérique comme en Europe. La presse recourt très fréquemment aux désignations « danses mathématiques », « danses scientifiques ». Une nouvelle forme de réduction en art s’impose alors : on vante la possibilité d’unifier les pas, mais la standardisation et la notation permettent aussi de faire valoir un droit d’auteur, de diffuser des manuels et de normaliser des pratiques souvent jugées trop libres. L’iconographie des manuels de danse de société de l’entre-deux-guerres montre alors un usage exponentiel de diagrammes, certains témoignant d’une recherche technique et esthétique qui tendent à faire disparaître la représentation du corps pour ne conserver que la trace, l’empreinte du geste efficace.

  Left-wing radicalism in the United States: a foreign creed?

  Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)

  This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?

  Le groupe ESOPP organise une journée d'étude sur le thème « Assurance publique, assurances privées et invention des risques au XXe siècle ». Cette journée sera articulée autour de trois moments : travail et mobilité : le rôle des assurances dans la conception des risques, redéfinition des risques au travail et des parcours professionnels, temporalité du travail et gestion des risques.
