Crises, Conflicts, and Peace Processes in the Asia-Pacific (20th–21st Centuries)
Si l’histoire des relations internationales a d’emblée placé la guerre et de la paix au cœur de ses analyses, le déséquilibre demeure flagrant entre les études consacrées aux conflits armés, et celles plus discrètes relatives aux processus de paix. Une place particulière sera donc réservée aux acteurs et modalités des négociations ; à la mémoire de ces négociations, de leurs succès comme de leurs échecs, au rôle des organisations internationales ou régionales dans les sorties de guerre, aux conceptions proprement asiatiques de la paix, de la sécurité et du pacifisme, dont la dimension asiatique n’est guère abordée en dehors du Japon.

Perspectives interdisciplinaires
Cette journée d’étude vise à explorer les musiques populaires à travers le prisme du genre et de l’intersectionnalité, en questionnant la manière dont les constructions sociales de genre influencent les pratiques musicales, les représentations et les contextes de performance. Dans une approche résolument interdisciplinaire, elle propose d’analyser les interactions entre musique, paroles, images, identités de genre et positionnements sociaux afin de mieux comprendre les dynamiques esthétiques et sociales à l’œuvre dans ces scènes.

Philosophy and the National Question
Taking as its starting point the idea of “philosophical nationalism” proposed by Jacques Derrida, this seminar aims to question the way in which different national and nationalist discourses have accompanied both the construction of modern philosophical historiography and the development of comparative or intercultural philosophy. The division of the world into “philosophical nations” still constitutes today the starting point of any comparative effort and leads to making the “dialogue between traditions” a discourse tending to legitimize national ideologies.

From Japan to Brazil and Vice-versa: Historical and Aesthetic Perspectives of a Diasporic Cinema
In 2024, the 77th Festival of Cannes' short film competition selected Amarela (2024),a film by Japanese-Brazilian director André Hayato Saito, which focuses on the experiencesof Japanese-Brazilians. This event reflects a growing interest in a diverse, transnational, andmultilingual filmography on the subject of the Japanese diaspora, particularly theJapanese-Brazilians, who are the largest group affected by return migration (or “detourmigration” (Perroud, 2007)) to Japan. This Young Researchers Colloquium aims atvisualizing and discussing that film corpus and its aesthetic, socio-historical andmethodological issues.

Autour de l’Institut franco-chinois (1921-1950)
Diaspora étudiante, circulation des savoirs et relations institutionnelles sino-françaises
L’objectif de ce colloque sera, à partir de l’expérience de l’Institut franco-chinois de Lyon, de retracer l’histoire des échanges entre la France et la Chine dans le domaine de l’enseignement supérieur et d’en faire émerger les dynamiques, des premières tentatives des missionnaires français à celles qui ont vu le jour dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. Si certaines institutions ont fait l’objet de recherches ou de publications récentes, les liens entre elles et le devenir des individus passés par ces structures, en Chine ou en France, sont encore peu documentés. Les initiatives sont pourtant nombreuses à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, tant religieuses que laïques, chinoises que françaises, et ont contribué à une circulation des savoirs et l’établissement de réseaux de relations dans des domaines extrêmement variés (scientifique, juridique, littéraire, philosophique, artistique, médical etc.), représentatifs de la richesse des échanges intellectuels sino-français.

From 11 to 13 April 2024 we organize in Geneva a Symposium about the promotion of Chinese culture and arts in the decades 1930-1950 by, and around, the Geneva Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale.This symposium aims at being an opportunity for exchange and discussion among 16 specialists to shed light on the Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale and on the circumstances and context of its action. The main focus is on the promotion of Chinese arts: painting, literature, music, theatre and opera.

In the last decade the Digital Humanities (DH) movement has swept the academic landscape in the United States, Europe and China, DH has become a new mantra. However, we argue that the real transformative power transcends the broad DH label, rooted in the depth and specificity of computational methodologies. By critically examining examples drawn from disciplines like history, literature, and sociology, we highlight how computational methods offer both macroscopic and microscopic insights, reshaping the very essence of research.

Figures, Trends, and Perspectives”.

This conference examines war losses and casualties during the East and South-east Asian conflicts from the 1930s (e.g. Manchurian Crisis) to the 1970s, including the Second World War and the Chinese Civil War, with a focus on military (and prisoner) casualties rather than those of civilians. These conflicts were marked by the juxtaposition of hybrid military strategies and tactical configurations; a variety of local, regional, and international actors (including non-state groups); and a high degree of violence within fluid categories of imperial/anti-imperial, civil, and global warfare. The conference seeks to draw connections between these conflicts and regions by examining the administration of war losses and casualties, including the transfer of skills, knowledge, material, and personnel associated with these practices

En précurseur du musée imaginaire de Malraux, Jacques Doucet jeta dès la fondation de la bibliothèque d’art et d’archéologie (BAA) les bases d’une vaste collection de photographies illustrant tous les domaines de l’art mondial. L’ensemble portant sur l’Extrême-Orient, complémentaire du fonds de livres et d’estampes, est exceptionnel par son ampleur comme par sa qualité, car il a été rassemblé grâce à un réseau de savants, de voyageurs et d’amateurs, dont de grands noms de l’orientalisme. Il n’a encore jamais fait l’objet d’une étude systématique. Pour mieux le connaître cette journée d’étude le comparera à des collections contemporaines de même nature, conservées en France ou à l’étranger, pour évaluer avec précision son contenu, établir ses modalités de constitution en reconstituant le réseau des « extrême-orientalistes » liés à la BAA.

Ma Desheng (马德升). Parcours et création(s) d’une étoile
Ce colloque propose de revenir sur la carrière hors du commun de Ma Desheng (马德升), peintre, poète, sculpteur et performeur autodidacte. Fondateur en 1979 des Étoiles (星星), premier mouvement artistique contemporain en Chine, Ma Desheng est entouré par une imposante communauté composée d’artistes tels que Wang Keping (王克平), Huang Rui (黄锐) ou encore Ai Weiwei (艾未未). Ce colloque propose de réfléchir aux différents aspects de l’œuvre de Ma Desheng et d’explorer aussi son histoire ainsi que son univers relationnel.

Spirituality, Healthcare and Social Movements in East Asia. A Transnational Perspective
The East Asian cultural sphere has figured prominently in recent collections of research on new religious movements, Theosophy and global therapeutic cultures, while it continues to attract the attention of scholars working on civil society and self-help movements. But, although we are often aware of the complex entanglements between these seemingly separate areas of interest, we seldom have the opportunity to discuss such entanglements in and beyond East Asia. At the same time, in the last twenty years, significant scholarship has been published in East Asia on this topic.This conference aims to offer such a chance by inviting academic contributions to reflect on the intertwined relationship between spirituality, healthcare and social movements in East Asia from a trans-national/local/cultural perspective. As a time of unprecedented changes and accelerated global interactions, our focus lies on the period between the nineteenth to the twentieth-first centuries.

Ce colloque international interroge la bande dessinée telle qu’elle s’est développée dans l’aire géographique et culturelle de l’Asie orientale. Autour de communications abordant l’art de la bande dessinée au Japon, en Corée du Sud, en Chine, à Hong Kong, à Taïwan et au Vietnam, il s’agira de montrer quelles sont les spécificités historiques, stylistiques, médiatiques ou encore politiques du neuvième art dans les pays est-asiatiques. Le colloque sera également l’occasion d’évoquer les rencontres et les échanges entre ces différentes traditions de bande dessinée ainsi que leurs diffusions à l’étranger.

Spirituality, Healthcare And Social Movements In East Asia
A Transnational Perspective
East Asian Network for the Academic Study Of Esotericism - EANASE's first conference aims to offer the chance to reflect on the intertwined relationship between spirituality, healthcare and social movements in East Asia from a trans-national/local/cultural perspective. The emergence of new religious movements like Theosophy, Falungong and Taireido, or the worldwide popularisation of, for instance, acupuncture, reiki and hypnosis, challenge reductionist binary views of East/West, tradition/modernity, science/religion. Likewise, the recent dissemination of New Age practices across East Asia or the ongoing study of Buddhist meditation by American and European psychiatrists seem to reflect broader concerns that, for the past two centuries or so, have ignored national and cultural borders – and whose wider social implications are now more visible than ever.

À l'occasion des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de Tokyo en 2020, la revue Cipango - Cahier d'études japonaises - lance un appel à contribution pour un numéro spécial consacré aux précédents Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo, en 1964. L'objectif de ce numéro est de croiser les analyses sur les Jeux de 1964, au prisme de différentes disciplines (histoire, sociologie, littérature, urbanisme...), afin de nourrir une réflexion interdisciplinaire ancrée dans le long terme sur les Jeux Olympiques au Japon et de mettre en perspective historique l'évènement de 2020.

Writing, drawing and translating artificial intelligence in science fiction
From a transcultural perspective, this international workshop will look into some representations of Artificial Intelligence in Japanese and Chinese science fiction (SF) to shed light on the on the creative ways with which non-Anglophone science fiction envisions the social / cultural / economical / political impacts of AI development. It will examine Japanese and Chinese SF works – (translated) literature and manga – as well as some technological and political discourses on AI, to delineate possible alternative ways to approach the posthuman imagination.
