Literature and democratic transitions: case studies

Episcopal, Canonical and Secular Memorial Devices in Medieval Cathedrals
Art, Architecture, Liturgy and Writing
TEMPLA invites international researchers into medieval art history and related disciplines to debate the concept and expression of “dynamic episcopal and canonical commemoration” which occurred in European episcopal sees during the medieval period. The concept of commemoration goes beyond the funerary to include all those works, activities and uses of space that transmit through time a record of bishops and canons, their institutions, and important lay people. These commemorative works, however, were grafted onto a common setting that was in use over a long period of time. Thus, each cathedral setting witnessed the emergence of different dynamics in terms of the interactions and intersections between individual and/or collective memory.

Madrid, traces and traced (1950-2000)

Conference, symposium - History
Transnational, Transhistorical Perspectives
This international conference on carnival will bring together historians, anthropologists, and sociologists to explore the links between carnival and politics as showcased by carnivals in Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Latin America. The purpose of the meeting will be twofold: (1) discuss the evolution of "carnival studies" since the publication of Bakhtin’s Rabelais and His World fifty years ago; (2) use case studies covering a wide range of geographical areas and historical periods (from the Renaissance to the 21st century) to produce a coherent synthesis of the relationship between carnival and politics.

Pluridisciplinary perspectives on the creativity and innovation of foreign languages

Merchants, jurists and other "intermediate groups" in Early Modern Southern Europe
Merchants, farmers, jurists, clerks in large institutions, secretaries, independent landowners, local elites and highly sought master craftsmen, among many others, are individuals with an ambiguous social status. Looking at who was not born exactly noble, nor exactly commoner, but stood on the border between one world and the other, is one of the goals of this initiative. As part of a project developed in Portugal focusing on the Holy Office’s familiaturas, it will be held on September 16 and 17, 2015, a workshop at Escuela Española de Historia and Archaeological in Rome. Our aim is to select a total of 8 applicants, that will be joined by 4 guest speakers, for a joint reflection on the dynamics and profiles of ‘intermediate groups’, as well as on the methodologies for their study in Early Modern Times.

Railway Stations Intermodal mobility and urban development
In many countries, railway stations emerge as focal point for urban projects. Important investments go along with larger urban regeneration projects. The new attractiveness of the station may be explained by the recognition of its architectural and patrimonial values (especially when they are old and centric), but also by their growing importance as integrated transit hubs. A way of addressing the future of intermodal mobility consist in analysing, firstly, the way by which intermodality reshapes at the same time the place and the traveller experience. A second part of the call questions the station and its surrounding (urban places, neighbourhood) as singular places in metropolitan systems.

Two religions beneath the same roof
The history of pluri-confessional families in the Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula

Sociologists of art recognize the importance of networks concerning art whether it be the production / creation, the diffusion or even the consumption / reception of artworks. On the other hand, social network analysis scholars have studied from sociability to markets, access to resources, relational inequalities, the diffusion of innovations, scientific production... but little attention has been given to artistic activities. A special issue on "Art and networks" has been released in Spanish in the journal REDES and in French in the review Sociologie de l'Art on this joint topic. The works presented in them concern the artistic domain and use the methods of social network analysis. The workshop proposed has the intention to pursue the crossed fertilization between these two fields of research.

Islands and borders into modern and contemporary Mediterranean
III international seminar "Itinera. New perpectives on historical and geographical research"

Linguistic ideologies in the written press
