  Extrême-Orient : collectionneurs et collections d'aujourd'hui

  L’objet de ce colloque sera d’étudier les collections privées ou publiques liées à l’Extrême-Orient dans une perspective contemporaine. Si notre ambition sera d’accorder une large place à l’art contemporain, les collections envisagées pourront également rassembler des objets plus anciens, et pas seulement des objets d’art. Le terme « Extrême-Orient » sera ici compris dans un sens large, incluant les îles de l’Asie de l’Est et du Sud-Est. L’approche sera interdisciplinaire, mêlant histoire de l’art, esthétique, anthropologie, sociologie, économie ou même politique.

  Migration and exile in the Horn of Africa

  State of knowledge and current debates

  Cette conférence internationale vise à faire un état des lieux de la recherche en sciences sociales sur les migrations de la corne de l’Afrique à partir des travaux récents menés à la fois dans les régions d’origine, les régions de transit et celles de destination des migrants et des réfugiés. Avec la recrudescence des naufrages provoquant la mort de milliers de migrants éthiopiens, érythréens, somaliens et djiboutiens à proximité des rivages de l’Europe du Sud ces dernières années, particulièrement en 2015, les médias et les responsables politiques ont porté leur attention sur des zones jusque-là considérées comme marginales voire extérieures aux champs migratoires européens. Les formes de mobilités à l’œuvre dans la corne de l’Afrique sont multiples et anciennes. Ces drames auxquels l’Union européenne est confrontée, comme à Lampedusa en octobre 2013 ou aux larges des côtes libyennes en avril 2015, constituent la face la plus dramatique de dynamiques migratoires complexes.

  Studying Exile

  Les réalités migratoires contemporaines sont complexes en raison d’une quadruple caractéristique : mobilité accrue ; extension planétaire ; diversité du sens des flux ; variété des causes. Elles créent en conséquence des catégories migratoires extrêmement variées qu’il importe de penser ensemble. À cette fin, il est proposé de définir un objet d’étude à nommer expérience de l’exil et un domaine de recherche à nommer études exiliques dont le présent colloque contribuera à la fondation. L’ambition de ce champ multidimensionnel et pluridisciplinaire en construction est de redonner au vécu du sujet en migration toute la charge existentielle que les politiques migratoires actuelles, soucieuses de gestion efficace, tendent à oublier. Étudier l’exil afin de mieux accueillir l’exilé, accueillir l’exilé afin de mieux comprendre l’exil.

  Research Assistant Position in Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences

  The PhD student will write a thesis under the supervision of Dr M. Studer and Prof. G. Ritschard as part of the research project IP 214 of NCCR LIVES « Measuring and modelling vulnerability dynamics in a life-course context ». This research project intends to formalize a general framework for the quantitative modelling of life-course vulnerability. This includes two aspects: the measurement and conceptualization of vulnerability as a state or a risk (such as being at risk to fall in an unwanted situation) and as a process (e.g., social disaffiliation process). In a second stage, the research project will investigate methods to measure how vulnerability (measured as a state or process) is linked to explanatory individual factors (sex, social class…) or contextual dimensions (unemployment rates, social policies…). An application of the developed methodological framework in socioeconomics, such as vulnerability processes in employment, is also planned.

  Documentary art: aesthetic, political & ethical issues

  La question de la pratique documentaire traverse la modernité artistique et ne cesse de l’interroger. Elément hétérogène et perturbateur, le document a souvent été utilisé, dans la représentation picturale, théâtrale ou littéraire, comme outil de remise en question de l’autonomie de l’art et de la clôture qui souvent guette la représentation. De façon plus radicale, des arts comme la photographie ou le cinéma ont érigé l’enregistrement du réel en paradigme esthétique, suivant en cela l’idée moderniste d’une vocation spécifique des médiums. Le présent colloque vise ainsi à poser le problème de la nature et de la possibilité d’un « art documentaire » dans un contexte de renouvellement et d’extension des pratiques documentaires, manifeste ces quinze dernières années.

  Displacements and spatial transformations of religion in the English-speaking world

  The experience of migrating, moving away from familiar places—sometimes against one’s will—and relocating in foreign territories is deeply ingrained in the spiritual and historical legacy of monotheistic traditions. The Reformation, the colonial era and the contemporary globalized world have greatly amplified the phenomena of transplantation and mass migrations; in turn these uprootings have deeply transformed the religious geography of the English-speaking world. This two-day conference aims to explore the multiple dimensions of the spatial transformations of religion not only in the light of the experience of diasporas and other exiled or migrating religious minorities, but also from the point of view of merchants, travellers, missionaries, settlers, soldiers, etc.

  Regards croisés sur les métropoles des années 1940 à la fin des années 1960

  This conference is part of a multi-year programme on the history of the Greater Paris region, harnessing urban research in an international, interdisciplinary perspective. The first conference (held in December 2013 at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine) began by studying the work of the Commission for the Extension of Paris in 1913; this commission is considered to be the first expression of a project to plan and organise “Greater Paris”. The second conference (held in December 2014 at the Petit Palais) focused on the context of the 1934 Development Plan for the Paris Region (Plan d’aménagement de la région parisienne, or PARP), better known as the “Prost Plan”. The third conference will aim to reassess the planning of Greater Paris between the Second World War and the initial implementation of the Master Plan for Development and Urban Planning in the Paris Region (Schéma directeur d’aménagement et d’urbanisme de la région de Paris, or SDAURP) published in 1965, in a comparative approach including other metropolitan areas. Like the two previous conferences, the aim will also be to cast light on current events related to Greater Paris.

  Les mises en scène des sciences et leurs enjeux (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

  This interdisciplinary conference focusses on the articulation between science, science policy and science popularization. We study the objects, concrete displays, architectures for showing science, and consider these as materializations, at particular points in time, of specific conceptions of science and its social, cultural, economic or political place in society. Because a number of evolutions or public decisions now take place at European or international levels, it isimportant to consider these questions in a transnational perspective. By adopting a deliberately wide chronological focus, from the1800s to now, the conference seeks to contribute to contemporary debates by helping put into historical perspective the rapid transformation that institutions devoted to research, higher education  and science communication are all currently undergoing.

  Orchestrer la nation. Musiques, danses et (trans)nationalismes

  This conference will address music and dance together in order to discuss the complexity of national productions in a context of transnationalisation and cosmopolitisation of trajectories and identities. Inputs from music and dance will lead to understand how different logics — sliding, confrontation or co-construction — are intertwined between nationalisms and transnationalisms within postcolonies, through state politics, alternative nationalisms or transnational nationalisms conveyed by diasporas. This conference seeks to bring together empirical works as well as theoretical reflections and to gather researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds: ethnomusicology, dance/music anthropology, history and sociology, in order to foster a fruitful interdisciplinary dialogue and mobilise various academic perspectives conducive to an understanding of the entanglement between nationalism and musical and/or dance productions.

  EHESS Annual Ethnography Meeting

  Following the example of the Chicago Ethnography Conference which for 17 years has gathered graduate students from different local universities, the EHESS Annual Ethnography Meeting takes stock on the rich variety of ethnographic fieldwork realized by students and young scholars in social sciences. The first EHESS Annual Ethnography Meeting was organized in November 2014 with the purpose of making more visible the current ethnographic research and to stimulate discussion on ethnography as a method of scientific inquiry. Encouraged by the first meeting’s success, the second edition of the event will take place at the EHESS on October 14-15, 2015. The meeting hopes to bring together students and scholars in lectures, receptions, and 12 thematic panels.
